Hai Shi, Master and the Emperor make quite a show
antigone_19 December 2021
Great direction cinematography music.

It is raw and dark compared to other period cdramas and there it got me hooked, though I did not like it from the beginning (Some things seemed a bit off at first 10 episodes or more). But as it unfolds piece by piece and the characters mature...well love them or hate them, you choose. Second and third characters were surprisingly interesting. Even if they do not add up to the big picture I liked that they took the time to unfold some side stories.

The ending was quite rushed for such a slow burning show. And I do not understand how a woman can pretend to be a man like that...

All in all, I cried, I was on edge and I truly enjoyed it.

Good Setting with Predictable Plot

Warning: Spoilers
Dear writers in China you need to make change of the similarity of your dramas, how come almost of the ancient China drama end with cliffhanger or the separation of the couple even though you gave us almost 60++ eps of journey of blah blah blah romance.

So as I wrote the plot holds similarity with other drama, the cold-stone one-true-love male lead with bubbly love-never-end female lead. Yang mi and William chan are two actors that so popular in China which make me wonder because these two actors cannot really expressive and their acting is dull and similar to most of their dramas, as usual China's drama only think visual is more important than the quality of acting while the supporting roles are acting better than the male leads. The disappointing thing about this drama is the acting of the male leads however thank goodness the story is good even though too dramatic but at least the plot is good and satisfying. I root the supporting couple even though the die at the end.

BEAUTIFUL

Just LOVED IT.

From the acting, costumes, fighting scenes, romance and storyline. You have to fall in love with Yang Mi, William Chan and Xu Kai Cheng. A must watch and officially the best Chinese drama for me this year 2021. 10/10 ratings for me.

The fighting scene are great, especially when Haishi kills the left Huku king with her superb archery skills while on horseback - EPIC!

Everyone wants a love like Fang Zhu and Haishi. I fell in love with them and their story. Also William Chan is mesmerising in his role.

Side note: To me the one with the most hardship is definitely the Kings personal eunuch - poor thing.

I'm vexed
Bibiliography23 October 2022
The biggest gripe I have with Novoland Pearl Eclipse is the poor transitioning of scenes and the general lack of situational props that one ordinarily finds in dramas of this magnitude. There's hardly any external street shots and some internal scenes are so sterile and devoid of props that otherwise should lend realism to the ambience.

Likewise, the plot, which seems to be the standard in most palace intrigue c-dramas. The stoic male lead and the feisty female lead coupled with throne grabbing games and bad faith palace officials...it's all just so stale and unimaginative especially given the fact this is a made up historical setting that the writers should have exploited to the fullest extent knowing there would be minimal censorship by the Chinese government. In addition and I say this with all due respect to Chinese drama script writers....no one buys the female in male clothing disguise. I mean not one person on earth would ever think these scrawny, limp noodle, 40kg actresses can ever successfully disguise as a man without being found out in a second. Stop insulting out intelligence with this trope. Either find a female actress willing to bulk up or pretty please with a cherry on top stop with the madness.
