It's worth the trip to Marrakech
edd-689-75279718 March 2010
I bought this film about a year ago and have watched it several times, enjoying it on different levels with each successive viewing. I have shown it on dinner/movie nights to my more discriminating friends. Marrakech is not a film for the passive observer, but rather asks its audience to actively engage in its meticulously plotted odyssey. "In this game there are no rules," one of the characters explains, and this might also be said of the film itself. It moves engagingly non-linearly through time and place. I found the film mysterious and exotic and so when Calla, a photographer and the seductive model in her own photography, yearns for a more exotic backdrop for her work and hopes to find it in Marrakech, I thought it ironic. If you like car chases and cliché this film is not for you, but if you crave intelligent tension and purposeful film Marrakech is just the ticket.

Film noir mystery
Marrakesh was a very enjoyable film -- noir meets Twin Peaks. The plot is involved and draws the viewer quickly into the story. I immediately had strong likes or dislikes of each character. They were drawn together in a way familiar to travelers, quite coincidentally. I had questions about motives of the characters but these were answered with the surprising ending. I enjoyed that this was filmed in Mexico, but this was only the background. Marrakesh is the inspiration and provides elements of mood. The story/plot is the star. It's an quirky/intellectual mystery that is well crafted. Anyone looking for a film worth talking about would do well to check this out.
