Shocking is an understatement when describing the short film Eyes Beyond. Moments into the film, you might question watching the rest, wondering if it will become a senseless Saw-like remake, ripe with shoddy dialogue and even more ridiculous violence; the kind of movie only good for those with a taste for blood or a penchant for having a stomach as stable as a see-saw. However, somehow between the agonized cries and the malevolent laughter, if you manage to convince yourself to sit through it, you'll be glad you did.
The film starts off with two brothers who've invited an unsuspecting family trio for a neighborly supper. Things seem normal at first. Both parties are talking and bonding until suddenly, the family trio finds themselves bound at the dinner table undergoing unspeakable horrors. However, things aren't what they seem, and that's what adds a special dimension to this film.

The one, the only, Robert Nolan is the ultimate chameleon slipping in and out of roles with such ease. He has appeared in dozens of short films including some genre fare like Richard Powell's "Worm", Ryan M. Andrews's "The Devil Walks Among You", and Daniel Reininghaus's "Eyes Beyond" to name a few. We got the chance to ask this incredibly talented actor a few questions. Here is what he had to say.
So for those unfamiliar with you, who is Robert Nolan and what are you all about?
Aside from knowing my own name and that I exist on this planet right now, exactly who I am remains as mysterious a world to me as you are to you. Does anyone really know exactly who they are and what they are all about? The depths of the interior human are as infinite as the universe our bodies inhabit.

Daniel Reininghaus has just completed his first short future, Eyes Beyond, a tale of brothers who drug their neighbors one night after inviting them over for dinner. The brothers then proceed to torture and play mind games with their new found victims. Reininghaus is a director who has shown that he can create tangible emotions within the scope of a short feature. I had the chance to ask him a few questions about Eyes Beyond. Here is what he had to say.

The 7th annual Atlanta Underground Film Festival is like having four different fests crammed into an exhaustive three days on Aug. 27-29. It’s an outrageous underground fest, an animation festival, a documentary fest and a horror movie festival: The culmination of a month of fests run by Atlanta’s Festival League. There’s tons of short films, documentaries, features and more.
There’s lots of great stuff to recommend, too. On the last night of the fest, there will be a screening of Chris Hansen‘s second feature film, Endings, which tells the touching story of three people spending their last day on Earth together. The film was reviewed on Bad Lit a few months ago. On the short film front, there’s Loretta Hintz‘s wild lesbian bestiality (sort of) tale, The Sheep and the Ranch Hand and two films by the perpetually awesome Neil Ira Needleman, Meeskit...

I've seen enough horror Canadian and American horror films to know that most of them won't scare me and stay in my mind. However, while I wouldn't call myself a fan of Daniel Reininghaus's Eyes Beyond, I can tell you that this Canadian horror short film will be stuck in your memory for quite a while.
This rather confusing film starts in an apparently quiet neighbourhood. Gabriel (Daniel Reininghaus) and Adam Morales (Evan Eisenstadt) are the neighbours of a family made of Henry (Robert Nolan), Vivian (Kelly-Marie Murtha) and Abigail Rogers (Danielle Barker). One day, the Morales brothers invite the Rogerses for a dinner. However, it appears that the Rogerses ended up being the victims of the Morales brothers who unleash their violence.
This of course is what we're introduced to in the first minutes of Eyes Beyond. While the exploration of bipolar disorder or mental illness is rarely...

One would find it safe to assume that after 20 years of desensitizing and brainwashing thanks to countless hours of shoving horror films into my corneas, that there would be absolutely nothing that could phase me anymore. It is today that I must admit that I stand corrected. I will say that it takes some extreme measures in order to shake me up, but Daniel Reininghaus’ Eyes Beyond has done exactly that.
An extremely dark and unconventional look at the horrors of bi-polar disorder and the sorrow it brings to those who suffer from the illness, we as an audience are thrown into a whirlwind of “is it real or is it a dream” reality and a mind-blowing hallucination.
