Seven years after the release of Skyline, a belated sequel to the alien invasion tale is about to arrive...and it's extremely good.
DVD & Bluray
Whilst the first Skyline movie, released back in 2010, made a decent profit at the box office (almost $80 million from a $10 million-ish budget), the majority of the reviews dished out to the sci-fi yarn were not exactly kind. With 15% on Rt and a current 4.4% from users on IMDb, the film has often received widespread derision from both critics and general audiences alike.

Rule One: The Moffat Lies.
Rule One-a: So Does The McGann.
After nearly a year of what showrunner Steven Moffat described as “lying through my teeth”, the prequel to the Doctor Who anniversary episode “The Day of the Doctor” reveals that the one fact that upset people the most is the one that was the biggest lie.
Watch, and squee with me.
Ok, so technically, Paul McGann isn’t in the Anniversary episode proper, so his year-long claim that he wasn’t asked to take part wasn’t quite a lie, but it’s close enough.
And it was released on his birthday, which is just a case of the universe rolling the right way on occasion.
The Sisterhood of Karn made their first appearance in the Tom Baker adventure The Brain of Morbius. The Sisterhood have had a long history with the Time Lords, as described in numerous prose and audio adventures.

The app features two and half hours of video footage from the shows (viewable over Wi-Fi), and the full text from Harper Collins's companion books, written by Cox and Andrew Cohen. Users can also take a "mind-blowing 3D tour" of the Universe with Cox as their guide, pointing out the moons, planets, stars and distant galaxies on the edge of the known universe. Mr Nobody is a film about choices – its problem is it doesn’t seem to make any. By building a story around the idea of someone observing, or actually experiencing, several possible simultaneous realities all based on which decisions he makes, the writer-director, Jaco Van Dormael, has allowed himself the chance to throw apparently every scene he can think of into a movie. While it’s never exactly boring, the hodgepodge of ideas comes across as a mix between Sliding Doors, The Tree of Life, the last section of 2001, Dr Who and Wonders of the Solar System.
The story centres (or stories centre) on Nemo Nobody, played as an adult by Jared Leto. As a child his parents (Rhys Ifans and Natasha Little) separate and much of what follows revolves around whether he stays with his father or mother. This is illustrated by a scene at a train station where his mother boards a train,...

The Tree Of Life Review [Cannes]
For many The Tree of Life was one of the most anticipated films of Cannes 2011. Walking around the sun drenched town on the French south coast, there are numerous posters advertising the movie, and after hoarding into the early morning screening there was a buzz of anticipation, as derrières filled every seat in the house. Oh the disappointment! For the first 20 mins of the film, the screen is bombarded with a mix of science documentary-esque graphics of the big bang, planets and a variety of nebulas and such forth (Think 'Steven Hawking's Universe', or for UK readers,'Wonders of the Solar System'). We are then treated to scenes of the various landscapes around the world that are comparable to a 'Discover Australia' commercial.

Science is sexy again- just ask Professor Brian Cox. Back in the 90s, he was strutting his stuff in forgettable (and probably regrettable) pop band D:Ream, and now he shares his time between firing particles at one another for the Atlas experiment, and fighting off the ladies while presenting his wonderful science show on BBC2 (coincidentally called Wonders of the Solar System).
It’s a great time to be making science programmes, and The Universe, The History Channel‘s American grand dame of astronomy TV shows has recently released Seven Wonders of the Solar System on 3D Blu-ray, which is compatible with both 3D and traditional 2D systems.
I love the fascination that our progressive and innovative world has with exploring our origins, through fastidious research into the heavens, and there is an infectious and unbridled wonder in everything that The Universe series offers viewers that marks it out as...

FX's "Justified," TNT's "Men of a Certain Age," and the CBS drama "The Good Wife" were among the 39 recipients of the 70th Annual Peabody Awards, announced today by the University of Georgia Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication.
Joining those three critically acclaimed dramas on a wide-ranging list of radio, television, and web-based winners recognized by the Peabody Board as representing the best in electronic media were HBO's epic miniseries "The Pacific," as well as the premium channel's Emmy-award winning original movie "Temple Grandin." The "Degrassi" franchise received its first Peabody in its 30-plus year history with a two-part episode of "Degrassi: The Next Generation" that focused upon the struggles of a transgender teenager.
In total, PBS picked up nine Peabodys among its various scripted programs in addition to awards for news and documentary series, including for Masterpiece/Mystery!'s "Sherlock: A Study in Pink," a featuring 21st-century update of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's classic detective, and "Great Performances: Macbeth," starring Patrick Stewart in version that reimagines the Scottish Play in an alternate setting that resembles revolutionary Russia. Among the documentary winners were "Reel Injun: On the Trail of the Hollywood Injun," which aired on "Independent Lens," and the American Masters features "LennonNYC" and "Elia Kazan: A Letter to Elia," a cinematic love letter as presented by Martin Scorsese.
"For 70 years the Peabody Award has defined excellence in electronic media," said Horace Newcomb, director of the Peabody Awards, in this morning's press release. "This list of Peabody recipients continues the commitment of the University of Georgia and the Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, the stewards of the award. With that commitment, we challenge media makers and distributors to reach higher, try harder and be ever mindful of their central role in public life."
HBO won seven Peabodys, the lion's share of for its documentaries, including "12th & Delaware," "For Neda," "Burma VJ," Spike Lee's "If God is Willing and da Creek Don't Rise," and the HBO sports doc "Magic & Bird: A Courtship of Rivals."
The list of 39 winners represents a record number of Peabodys awarded in a single year, selected by a 16 member board consisting of "television critics, industry practitioners and experts in culture and the arts," according to a UGA press release. Keep reading for the full list of Peabody winners.

And BBC hit Sherlock, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, beat ITV’s Downton Abbey to win best drama series. But Piers Morgan lost out to radio DJ Reggie Yates as best presenter. I’m a huge fan of the History Channel’s science documentaries so it gives me great please to announce that courtesy of History and Go Entertain, we are able to give away 3 copies of The Universe: 7 Wonders of the Solar System on Blu-ray to our loyal Owf readers.
Viewable both in 3D and as a standard high-definition Blu-ray, the programme fuses spectacular CGI with the latest scientific research to take the viewer on a journey of a lifetime. Visit the icy geysers on Enceladus, one of Saturn’s outer moons, before exploring the gas giant’s iconic rings. Dive into Jupiter’s Great Red Spot, a vast, centuries-old storm bigger than planet Earth, and soar through the Asteroid Belt amid millions of rocks left over from the formation of the solar system. Scale Mars’ Olympus Mons, a massive volcano three times the size of Everest, and have a close...

Brian Cox treats us to the Wonders Of The Universe, while The Ricky Gervais Show returns to the UK. Here's our UK TV look-ahead...
Last year around this time, the BBC treated viewers to a science show with a difference in Wonders Of The Solar System. The difference was in the anti-stuffy presenter, Professor Brian Cox, whose simple, but sensible demonstrations elucidated more in one hour than a whole term of school for some. Ryan reviewed the show saying, "Cox's enthusiasm for his subject is infectious, and while a physics professor talking about science in jeans and t-shirt may sound like a school teacher's toe-curling attempt to get down with the kids, his casual approach to explaining science is refreshing, rather than condescending."
You can read those reviews here and Professor Cox returns with a new series, Wonders Of The Universe, Sunday, March 6th at 9:00 on BBC2, which we'll also be reviewing.

Brian Cox has admitted that he doesn't miss his days in pop group D:Ream. The singer-turned-physicist, who stars in the BBC's Wonders Of The Solar System, revealed that he enjoyed being part of the band during his 20s but wouldn't be able to cope with their gruelling schedule today. "You love being in a band in your 20s but I don't fancy schlepping around the world doing gigs now," he told Metro. "I prefer using my brain." The group, who formed in 1992, (more)...

While I enjoy History’s The Universe series as much as any astronomy enthusiast, the fact of the matter is the series has its ups and downs. Sometimes they seem hard pressed to find new ideas for episodes (which is truly ironic considering the subject is “the universe”) and consequently entire halves of seasons feel like rehashes of things that came before. “7 Wonders of the Solar System” suffers and benefits from this all at once. On one hand, it’s a summary episode, looking briefly at 7 different phenomena in our solar system in a way that piques interest, feeds it, but then moves on to a new subject before offering anything truly substantial on any. On the other hand, the 7 phenomena are interesting and are presented in 3D with visuals that take full advantage of an extra dimension. So is it worthwhile shelling out about $20 for the first episode of the fifth season in 3D?...

Over the last few years I’ve had the opportunity to digest pretty much every DVD or Blu-ray package that came out of History’s The Universe series. Up to this point, the series has put out four varied, though solid seasons, and now we have the fifth. Of all the seasons, the fifth represents a hard sell for those who have followed the series thus far, because you’re getting less in more ways than one. The number of episodes per season has changed almost every year, but the fifth season has a disturbing lack of content with only 8 episodes, of which only 6 have worthwhile content and only 3 or 4 don’t feel like repackaged episodes from the prior four seasons. So what does this disappointing season have to offer?

It was only a matter of time before History found a way to mix 3D elements into their productions (you just know there's going to be something with Japanese Zeros zooming at the screen), and this time they did it with "7 Wonders of the Universe," one of their more deserving episodes from The Universe. Dodging between glaciers and flying through the asteroid field, the special takes full advantage of at-home 3D technology with some great 3D animation that looks fantastic in hi-def. To celebrate its release on January 11th, JustPressPlay is giving two readers the chance to win a copy. Want to know how? Just keep reading.

Say what you like about the BBC, they sure know how to photograph the natural world. World renowned for their science and nature catalogue, the BBC has given us shows the likes of Planet Earth, and more recently Life, that have set a benchmark for documenting the wonders of our planet in all it's grace and beauty. Now, the Beeb turn their attention skyward towards the heavens, with a new five-part serial, The Wonders of the Solar System.
Hosted by physicist and all round geek, Brian Cox, The Wonders of the Solar System is not your typical astronomy/astrophysics series. Ditching the cold, graphics heavy lecture format that makes The History Channel's The Universe such a colossal bore, Wonders...instead adopts a much more casual approach. Sticking wherever possible to actual video footage and photography, the series takes one specific phenomenon each episode and explores it from a perspective...

Now that September is here, the summer movies are slowly starting to trickle out on DVD... starting with the ones that didn't do so well in theatres, naturally. This week we get the SNL MacGruber movie and Killers starring Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigl, and not a heck of a lot else. Festival sleeper Solitary Man starring Michael Douglas and Jesse Eisenberg also hits stores today, along with a new Special Edition of Wall Street and Blood Into Wine, a documentary about Maynard James Keenan's journey to becoming a winemaker. If you're a fan of Norm McDonald, the gem of the week is definitely The Norm Show: The Complete Series. Also out this week on DVD and Blu-ray: new seasons of The Office, Supernatural, and Smallville. What will you be buying or renting this week? MacGruber [1] (+ Blu-ray [2]) Killers [3] (+ Blu-ray [4]) Solitary Man [5] (+ Blu-ray [6]) That Evening Sun [7] (+ Blu-ray [8]) The Exploding Girl...

I'm trying to adjust to a new schedule and my body, which got to spend a whole summer sleeping until around 11am almost every day and then was free to take indulgent and unnecessary naps, is fighting back pretty hard. I keep waking up in the middle of the night totally ready to go, but three or four hours later when I actually have to be awake it's like I've been shot in the ass with a tranq dart. I'm hoping this all sorts itself out within a week because I'd really like to become a productive member of society one day and I get the impression that most of those people aren't hopping out of bed to start their day at the crack of noon. Here's your Wednesday night TV:
8:00pm: "Cma Music Festival: Country's Night to Rock" on ABC. That theme is dumber than dumb.

I've been attempting to watch more television, or at least more shows, right now while I don't have too many other obligations so I can look at least partially informed about the shows I write about. I say "attempting" because half the time it goes something like this: Family Member - "What's that?"
Me - "Oh, it's this new show I'm watching so I can talk about it on my column."
Family Member - "...This is terrible" *changes channel*
And so on. However, while working on watching those terrible shows I tend to see more commercials than I'd really like to and have developed strong and irrational feelings of hatred towards some of them. I discussed the creepy car insurance guy previously, but one of my other least favorite series of ads is the one for Miller Lite where the guys who don't want Miller Lite possess feminine traits or attire.

One of the more pernicious affects that high school seems to have on culture at large is the idea that everyone has to be categorized. I'm not sure if this arose from popular media telling high schoolers that people fit into neat little easily cast boxes or if it arose from actual high school experiences but I tend to lean towards the latter; teenagers are nothing if not judgmental and insecure so the tendency to assign and dutifully live up to labels is almost all they're good for. This has carried over into reality television, which conveniently cuts the first few episodes of the season so we can get to see who's going to be playing The Bitch, The Jock, The Brain, The Geek, etc. So, of the shows on tonight (if you watch any of them) what category do you think the characters fall into and is it the...

The one thing Shark Week is missing, in my opinion, is a theme song. Some sort of rallying call for shark fans to use as a ring tone, to sing at karaoke night or some other expression of their shark devotion. I'm not a songwriter, but I've got a few existing songs that could be easily altered to fit the shark week motif because one of my favorite leisure time activities is altering the lyrics to popular songs to fit random situations in my life. (One of my favorites a while ago was changing N.E.R.D's ode to bathroom cocaine usage to "All the doggies standing in a line at the back door!" when I would get home. Yes, I am that cool.) A couple suggestions right off the top of my head: "Rude Boy" by Rihanna ("Do you chomp chomp chomp what I chomp chomp chomp?"), "California...
