The X-Men '97 finale featured some huge Marvel Universe cameos, including Black Panther. However, we'd later discover that T'Chaka was beneath the mask, not T'Challa.
The decision has perplexed viewers, particularly when T'Challa's father is typically portrayed as the former Black Panther who fought alongside Captain America in World War II. T'Challa being sidelined has spawned many fan theories, with most convinced the decision must be related to Chadwick Boseman's death.
Following the actor's tragic passing, Marvel Studios chose not to recast his Black Panther. Instead, the hero died off-screen in the MCU, and 2022's Black Panther: Wakanda Forever ended with the reveal that he has a son, also called T'Challa.
In an interview with Phase Zero (via Toonado.com), X-Men '97 supervising director Jake Castorena was asked if there was a reason T'Chaka was depicted as Black Panther after the short-lived Fantastic Four: The Animated Series featured the...

“Assembled: The Making of X-Men '97” continues Marvel Studios behind-the-scenes Sneak Peek of their newest TV series, now streaming on Disney+:
“…in the early 1990’s, , few beyond those who journeyed into the pages of Marvel comics had ever heard of ‘Rogue’, ‘Beast’, ‘Gambit’ and ‘Wolverine’.
“But that sad state of affairs changed forever when ‘X-Men: The Animated Series’ debuted on television and touched millions hungry for something different. The series was unlike any cartoon that had come before it, exploring themes of prejudice and social justice. The characters were super, but they were also outsiders, underdogs. Kids everywhere could relate – as well as adults.
“‘Assembled’ recalls the birth of ‘X-Men: The Animated Series’ and its revival thirty years later as ‘X-Men ’97’.

T’Chaka’s Black Panther cameo in X-Men ‘97 was met with so much criticism that director Jake Castorena had to explain why they chose T’Chaka over T’Challa to appear in the series. Meanwhile, others wondered why bring back the character at all, now that Chadwick Boseman has passed away.

X-Men ’97 just finished its first season, one of the best things the MCU has ever released. Yet, way back in 1992, Fox Kids almost killed its predecessor before it had a chance to evolve.
In the new documentary special Assembled: X-Men ’97, three of the chief creatives on X-Men: The Animated Series reveal their struggles getting the show off the ground. Producer and director Larry Houston recalls working under Marvel Productions president Margaret Loesch, who always championed the X-Men throughout the ’80s, resulting in misfires like Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends or Pryde of the X-Men but no ongoing series. When Loesch took a role as head of Fox Children’s Network, she brought Houston with her and gave him his shot, with one caveat.
“The folks above her didn’t believe X-Men was gonna do anything,” says writer Julia Lewald, who, along with her husband Eric, worked as a writer on the original show.

At long last, it seems the MCU is getting closer to its mutation. We’re only two months away from Deadpool & Wolverine, which in its own way will bring something of an evolutionary leap to Marvel’s cinematic DNA. The world is still raving about the stellar first season of animated show X-Men ’97. And now, there are signs that we’re getting closer to the thing fans have been really waiting for: a proper MCU X-Men movie. According to The Hollywood Reporter, a writer has been hired to write such a thing – and the person tasked with that almighty responsibility is Michael Lesslie.
Given the amount of secrecy around Marvel’s X-Men plans, it’s unknown what brief Lesslie has been given – but he’s currently putting pen to paper on bringing Xavier’s team to the big screen. Lesslie previously served as lead writer on Park Chan-wook...

X-Men '97 was a big hit with critics right from the start, but the Disney+ revival series has now become the highest-rated Marvel Studios project - live-action or animated, big or small screen - in the 16-year history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The series wasn't only a critical favourite, as Deadline reports that May 15th's cameo-filled finale, "Tolerance is Extinction, Part 3," amassed a whopping 3.5 million views globally in its first five days on the streaming platform, making it the most-viewed full-length animated series finale since Season 1 of What If…?.

In the X-Men '97 season 1 finale, the team was thrown backwards (and forwards) in time. In 3000 B.C., we watched as Professor X, Magneto, Beast, Rogue and Nightcrawler encountered a young En Sabah Nur, a.k.a. Apocalypse.
Meanwhile, in 3060 A.D., Cyclops and Jean Grey crossed paths with a younger version of their son, Cable. As for Wolverine, Morph, Jubilee, and Storm, they're currently unaccounted for (though it's been confirmed they're not in the present and are scattered across one or both timelines).
Talking to IGN (via Toonado.com), supervising director Jake Castorena teased plans for Apocalypse in X-Men '97 season 2, explaining why the decision was made to put the spotlight back on the iconic villain.
"With the X-Men, for better or for worse, all roads usually end up leading to Apocalypse, right? It's either Apocalypse, Sinister, or Magneto," he says. "What I will say is we do things on purpose.

We might finally be getting a new X-Men film as Michael Lesslie has been tapped to write a new film for Marvel.
It looks like the X-Men have come to stay in the MCU. After the disappointing Dark Phoenix, the X-Men have been laying low until we got quick teases in Ms. Marvel and The Marvels before Deadpool & Wolverine re-introduces everyone’s favourite grumpy mutant proper.
Deadline now reports that Marvel is planning a proper X-Men movie and Michael Lesslie is in negotiations to pen the script. Lesslie wrote last year’s Hunger Games: The Ballad Of Songbirds & Snakes, proving he can adapt someone else’s material. Lesslie has also penned the script for the new Now You See Me sequel which will be filming later this year.

The Marvel Universe is a treasure trove of characters, and the X-Men are among its most beloved properties. Ever since Disney acquired Fox and its repository, Marvel fans have been asking for the live-action debut of the mutants after decades of hits and misses within the Fox Universe. While the animated X-Men ’97 was definitely a step in the right direction, it seems Marvel has reverted back to its old ways.

X-Men ‘97 has left fans more excited than ever before to see a live-action take on the mutant team. Movies like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and The Marvels have offered a glimpse of what the heroes could look like in the MCU, with Deadpool & Wolverine set to do the same later this summer.
The difference there, though, is that those are the 20th Century Fox Variants of the X-Men; what Marvel Studios does with its long-awaited reboot will surely be completely different. And, if X-Men ‘97 is any indication, we’re in store for something truly special (the series has been praised for its compelling take on the heroes and the way their powers have been portrayed in new and visually distinct ways).

The X-Men are one step closer to joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe with their own movie.
Screenwriter Michael Lesslie (“The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes”) is in talks with Marvel Studios to write the first “X-Men” movie since the mutant superhero franchise was acquired by Disney in its purchase of 21st Century Fox in 2019.
As with every Marvel Studios film, Kevin Feige will produce, but nothing else about the film has been set, including director or cast. Marvel has been slowly seeding the MCU with mutants over the past two years, including brief mentions in 2022’s “Ms. Marvel” and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” and appearances of the X-Men’s namesake and leader, Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart), in an alternative universe in 2022’s “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” and of Beast (Kelsey Grammer) in the post-credits sequence of 2023’s “The Marvels.”

Exclusive: The finale of X-Men ’97 has set a promising track record for Disney+.
The episode, which debuted on May 15, saw 3.5M views globally in its first five days on the streaming platform. That makes it the most-viewed full-length animation series finale since Season 1 of What If…?, the Walt Disney Company says.
According to Disney, viewership had been growing consistently over the four episodes leading to the finale.
X-Men ’97 premiered in March with 4M views collectively across the first two episodes in their first five days on the platform.
The exact breakdown of viewership for each episode is unclear, but regardless it does indicate a strong, growing interest for the animated series, since the finale alone was nearly able to match the audience of the first two episodes in the same time frame.
As an added bonus, Disney also says that viewership for the original 1992 X-Men animated series has doubled since X-Men ’97 premiered.

Like any good superhero, Marvel Television has returned from the dead. The label is what the Marvel Netflix shows like "Daredevil" and the ABC ones like "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." were made under. Marvel Television was rendered defunct in 2019 after Marvel Studios absorbed it. Now, though its operations remain under the studio's purview, its name is being used again as part of an effort to more cleanly delineate the projects of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Marvel Studios will continue to be the label of the films, while Marvel Television will headline upcoming Disney+ programs like "Agatha All Along" and "Daredevil: Born Again." Marvel Animation will cover projects like the excellent "X-Men '97" (which is not part of the MCU), while Marvel Spotlight is for small-scale projects like "Echo" (read our review here).

When Secret Wars writer Jonathan Hickman relaunched the X-Men line of comic books by sending the heroes to Krakoa and making them immortal, there was one subtle change which generated a lot of discussion.
After decades of the trio being embroiled in a love triangle, it was strongly hinted that Wolverine, Cyclops, and Jean Grey's new life on the island nation had resulted in them taking their relationship down a very...modern...route.
Yes, the insinuation was that they were a "throuple," with Scott and Logan presumably sharing Jean (or vice versa).
The biggest hint in that respect came when the floorplan of the "Summer House" confirmed that their bedrooms were linked, with Jean's in the middle (something unique to their rooms only).
We're sure you don't need us to join the dots there, but Tom Brevoort, Executive Vice President and new X-Men Group Editor at Marvel Comics, has...

Nonetheless, a recent interview featuring Hugh Jackman, Ryan Reynolds, and director Shawn Levy have left some fans perplexed. The topic of cameos—more especially, the potential for characters like Elektra, Mystique, and Storm to show up in Deadpool & Wolverine—was discussed during the Fandango interview.

While the trio remained tight-lipped about any potential cameos, Jackman’s reaction to the mention of Halle Berry’s Storm piqued fans’ interest. And they couldn’t help but notice Jackman’s hesitation and the hint of a smile that played on his lips, leading many to speculate that something fishy might be going on.

We've covered quite a few actors and actresses here at TV Fanatic, and while some of them have fallen into the "familiar face in the background" roles, none have snuck up on audiences like Olivia Munn.
One of her first acting gigs was that of "Claw Hostess" in the Steve Carell and Tina Fey comedy Date Night.
Although her part was small, the actress was one of the most memorable experiences of that movie—besides Mark Wahlberg shirtless, that is.
Though she looks like a model, Munn's career has focused solely on the small and big screen and live and scripted appearances.
In many ways, she's like that actor you notice when you rewatch movies from years ago, making you go, "Wait, isn't that what's her name from that thing?"
It's an extremely common occurrence with actors who turn into big names later in their careers. Don't believe me?...

Taking to social media to discuss his work on the series, former X-Men '97 showrunner Beau DeMayo revealed that Deadpool was "off-limits" to the team working on the X-Men: The Animated Series revival's first two seasons.
The prevailing theory among fans is that it must have something to do with Deadpool & Wolverine being on the horizon. The show has featured plenty of other big Marvel cameos, though, including Captain America, Spider-Man, and Doctor Strange.
Marvel Studios Head of TV, Streaming, and Animation, Brad Winderbaum recently caught up with Screen Rant (via Toonado.com) about Wade Wilson's absence from X-Men '97. As it turns out, there's a chance we will eventually see the anti-hero make an appearance.
"I don't know that it was like a hard and fast rule that we couldn't use Deadpool," the executive explained. "We would have had to have an insanely compelling reason to bring Deadpool in.

In the first chapter of X-Men '97's epic three-part "Tolerance Is Extinction" finale, we were reunited with the wall-crawler from Spider-Man: The Animated Series. The show ran from 1994 to 1998, and wrapped up on an open-ended note, so just seeing him again felt like a very big deal.
However, the finale brought an even bigger surprise when we learned that Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson had been reunited. Needless to say, none of us expected X-Men '97 to resolve a decades-old cliffhanger, but we now know the hero managed to track her down after she was lost in the Multiverse.
In an interview with Screen Rant (via Toonado.com), Marvel Studios Head of TV, Streaming, and Animation, Brad Winderbaum touched on the excitement surrounding a moment many fans hope is setting the stage for a Spider-Man '98 revival on Disney+.

X-Men '97 executive producer Brad Winderbaum recently provided a production update on season 2 as fans are eagerly waiting for the new season.
The first season finale that aired last week ended with a massive cliffhanger for our favorite heroes. Since then, fans have expressed their hope that the next season will come sooner than expected.
Fortunately, season 2 was already in the works prior to the series premiere. However, as everyone knows, the animation process takes a lot of time before it gets completed and ready for airing.

Earlier this month, a pretty wild rumour started doing the rounds online suggesting Marvel Studios wants Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson to play Apocalypse in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
An X-Men reboot - hopefully titled "Uncanny X-Men" - will be released after Avengers: Secret Wars, but is the pro wrestler turned Hollywood A-Lister a good fit for the MCU? It's no secret that he attempted to exert creative control over the DC Extended Universe after attempting to turn it into the "DJ Extended Universe" with Black Adam!
That won't fly with Marvel Studios and Kevin Feige, but if The Rock is willing to play ball, then he could make for a suitably formidable En Sabah Nur in a future live-action X-Men movie.
In some new fan art, we get an idea of what he'll look like as the villainous Apocalypse and, honestly, it works. We still don't know how old the X-Men themselves will be,...

‘X-Men ’97’ emerged as an unexpected triumph for the Marvel studio amidst a string of disappointments. The series maintained consistently high ratings, staying faithful to the original animated show in both narrative and essence.
Throughout the episodes, numerous notable characters made cameo appearances. However, one prominent Marvel mutant was conspicuously absent: Deadpool. This absence was peculiar, especially considering his brief appearance in the original series and the anticipation surrounding his upcoming movie. Wouldn’t it have been ideal to further build excitement for him through the show?
Fans recently inquired about the absence of Deadpool to Beau DeMayo, the show’s creator, who disclosed that the Merc With the Mouth was not considered. In a recent interview with ScreenRant, Brad Winderbaum, head of animation, provided further insight into the matter.

‘X-Men ’97’ was an unexpected success for the studio following a series of flops. The show had consistently high rankings, keeping true to the original animated series in both the story and the spirit.
Over the course of the episodes, we’ve seen cameos of plenty of notable characters, and one notable Marvel mutant was missing, Deadpool. This was strange considering that he did appear in the original series briefly, and since he has a movie coming up, wouldn’t it make perfect sense to hype him up even more through the show?
Recently fans asked Beau DeMayo why Deadpool wasn’t included and the creator of the show revealed that Merc With the Mouth was off the table. Now in his recent interview with ScreenRant, Brad Winderbaum head of animation gave us more details on the matter.

Eric Kripke’s The Boys is one of the most violent and unhinged TV shows ever to be made. From the infamous Termite scene to Homelander being a murderous maniac, there have been several moments throughout the three seasons of the show that will make the audience gasp out loud and possibly cleanse their eyes.

But this unhinged-ness is what makes the show so entertaining to watch, especially when many of its characters have been based on real people. The follow-up series to the original X-Men: The Animated Series from 1992, X-Men ’97 is gaining and rebuilding all the hearts that were broken when the original series got canceled after five seasons, and more. However, even while winning all of those hearts, this series by Beau DeMayo didn’t hesitate to break a whole lot more with its emotional plotlines that had fans sobbing.

That being said, one particular decision from the former showrunner DeMayo, who pretty much created this latest masterpiece before getting fired for reasons unknown, had the entire team sleepless at nights out of anxiety. This was because this decision included the brutal death of a fan-favorite mutant, and they weren’t sure how fans would take it after their initial reaction to the series.

The first season of X-Men ’97 ended this week on Disney+, but Marvel fans will have to be patient before they can start streaming Season 2.
A second season of the animated series has already been greenlit, and executive producer Brad Winderbaum gave an update on the production of the new season.
“It’s still an animatic phase,” Wanderbaum told ComicBook in an interview. “Animation takes so long to make as I’m sure you know. There was a great bit about this in Invincible Season 2. They just nailed it so hard, it is the greatest.”
Wanderbaum explained that “it takes a long time” for an animated series to get made “Because the studio wants to see how successful the first season is before they greenlight the second season there’s a lag.”
“We were lucky enough to get the greenlight before we aired so there’s maybe less of a lag,...
