Daniel relocates to Candleford permanently and establishes his own newspaper, The Candleford Chronicle. Several of the locals have misgivings about having their own newspaper and if they really want everyone to know what is going on around them. A Crimean war veteran and native of Lark Rise, Arthur 'Pegleg' Myhill, returns to the hamlet on his annual journey. Pegleg is a beggar, constantly traveling the countryside and living off the few pennies he is given. Emma and others think it's a shame that he has to live the way he does and Daniel thinks he may have the Chronicle's first big story: fair treatment for aging war veterans who are now living in poverty. Meanwhile, Thomas Brown begins to feel that he is a failure in life. Minnie decides to give Alf a token of her affection.
