Good concept not realized due to terrible acting
dean290011 June 2011
I really do love horror anthologies and wish there were more made. I was hoping to be able to look past the budget and enjoy the film.

Unfortunately it is impossible to look past non professional actors and watch a film in which this will be the only movie the main characters will be in because it just makes you want to cringe wit every line of dialog spoken.

This has three stories and a wraparound story much like Creep show. The only story bearable is the final of the three.

The movie is not scary, has zero tension, and when it attempts humor it falls flat on its face.

I do not recommend this movie to even die hard horror fans. I do believe the stories could have been rewritten and made into a good little horror flick. However, this does not happen when you get your friends and family as the cast.

Why do I do this to myself?

Warning: Spoilers
After watching Slices of Life, SOL, I am reminded of what was once told to me. I know you can, but you shouldn't. In my case it was trying to steal road signs while drunk, in SOLs case, it's being made.

I take offense to the numerous reviews of this film which are clearly friends of people who worked on the film or those workers themselves. Simply put, don't review if you are related to the project, it's tacky and looks desperate.

I feel like direction may have been seriously lacking for the multitude of actors in this film. Not knowing where to look, not knowing what to do with their body, not knowing motivation for emotion or for lines... you name it, they don't have it. Another potential case of a Director/Editor/ADR/writer/Props/Producer/Makeup Artist doing a bit too much of everything else and not enough on any one job to do it well.

This all could also stem from the 4 stories. I'm not going to go into each in depth since each could have a whole review and it would take far too long to write. So as an overall... You can't just say, hey, we've got 3 maybe OK ideas so lets just add a meaningless frame story and make 3 shorts. They don't stand alone and together they look even worse. Work life features meaningless dialogue with characters who have no impact on the story (stretching a thin plot for length). Not caring much about or for the protagonist means the climax (if not the whole story) is meaningless...which a girl who likes a guy who feels lonely being shot in the head is a pretty poor climax regardless. Then the denouement is cheesy and completely ridiculous. Home Life (book 2) starts out promising but quickly falls flat as the set up is trumped by an over eager jump into the horror. Then the "twist" is basically given to you after the husband first walks in the door at the beginning. There is no rising action as things simply just happen. One minute it's a a baby shower, then a demon child. Then a loving talk with a husband, then another haunting. Then supermarket, where visions occur. then home, where more visions and another haunting... No build up makes for scenes feeling lazily put together as well as just a prelude to some gory death. As for book 3, Sex Life... it's better than the rest as a story, but somethings are simply bothersome. The girl being molested by her uncle then getting vengeance with her crotch monster is unnecessary as well as the characters reaction (or non reaction) to her being raped in the first place. Not saying this story is good, merely put together better...as unbelievable as it is. The 4th frame story is just weak and pointless with zero pay off as of course the girl named Mira is in fact Irma...must have taken a page from Troll 2. Also, the fact that she has amnesia seems to be lost as she knows the protocol of the motel at the end while all she did was read her books at the front desk.

I understand there are 3 separate stories wrapped up in the framing 4th story but the visuals within each sequence are confused. constant breaking of 180 line, unmotivated (frankly uninspired) camera movements, poor focus at times, completely unnecessary insert shots, inconsistent coverage, etc. Bottom line, not shot well.

Continuity suffers through this film, as a script supervisor it bothers me to see these things. However I do recognize editing has a big effect on this and given the massive editing problems through this film that may be where the continuity errors stemmed from. Bad cuts, bad ADR, horrible SFX, using every cheap filter and general effect trick FCP or perhaps even Premiere has, I got a headache from the constant flashes, dutch angles, and digital shakes/zooms.

Audio dies in this film. At times it's normal quality, then dips to on camera quality, then disappears, then reappears in ADR version... This isn't surprising as it took 4 years to film this so it's not realistic to believe they kept the same mixers or mics over that time frame.

Look, bottom line is this should have been just the stories as shorts, this way the proper funds and time could be allocated to make the stories more interesting and the final screen product more valuable and entertaining. But as is, it's a cheap attempt at Creepshow or even a slightly more adult version of Are You Afraid of the Dark? My recommendation... avoid if you can. Not even much fun to try to mock as after a while even to riff becomes tedious.

Tales From The Crap
chaozengine24 October 2011
A movie that - in theory - could've passed muster as rejected Tales From The Crypt flick. The movie is three separate stories with an overall framing sequence set in a Bates Hotel ripoff The sequence doesn't really make sense though they obviously needed something to keep the movie organized. Each story itself would've had some redeeming quality but the director went with the cheap route going with blood, gore, and cheap SFX. The first one is probably the 'best' of the three. The second one shows its cards too early to be of interest. The last one is of the "kids run out of gas and find a place" variety which manages to throw a history twist and but then goes straight into the dumpster halfway in.

This movie could've been a WHOLE lot better and that's the real waste here (and why the movie gets only a 3).

A Huge Waste of Time
cliometrician10 June 2011
After reading the six reviews here, and then watching the film, I can only conclude that these six are either friends of the actors, or they work for the production company. This is one of the worst indie horror films I've ever seen, and I've seen plenty.

Think of the very worst of 70s low-budget horror films....now put this one in that category. There are three parts to the anthology: Work Life, Home Life, and Sex Life. The worst by far is The Programmer in Work Life. This part had some of the lamest acting I've ever seen on film and that goes for the entire cast. Not a one of them could have won an audition for a high school play. Dreadful.

In Home Life the acting improved, and it showed some early promise of wit, but the wretched screen play fizzled out before the end. And yet this part was the pick of a bad lot.

Sex Life, had it been played for humor, might have been marginally entertaining, especially the scene that's a takeoff on the movie TEETH, but on steroids. But weeping Jesus on the cross, the acting, direction, and plot begged to be put out of its misery. But I did like the kids' makeup.

Do not believe a word of the first six reviews here....unbelievable how anyone could find even a modicum of praise for this rubbish. I only struggled through it so I could write this review as a warning. Sheesh!

Impressive but Flawed Omnibus Horror Flick
jfrentzen-942-2042116 August 2011
Warning: Spoilers
The on screen title III SLICES OF LIFE amusingly renders the "three" in its Roman numeral, aligning the look of its rough edges with the hand-hewn lettering on the covers of three "books of life," a central motif in this gruesome horror effort.

This omnibus movie, which is neither as bad as some here have said nor as fantastic as others purport, alternately succeeds in its various reworkings of horror movie motifs and fails on some of those trappings, too. Apparently inspired by George A. Romero's CREEPSHOW but also owning much to the classic British omnibus flicks from Amicus and other studios (TALES FROM THE CRYPT [1972] comes to mind), 3 SLICES OF LIFE -- I shall drop the Romans as the end credits revert to the Latin -- is a mixed bag but one that, in the end, I liked.

The best episode in the trilogy, SEX LIFE, closes the film. Neatly constructed, it weaves two seemingly unrelated tales into a clever pay off -- the heroine of the piece unwittingly inherits a literally monstrous family curse, which neatly ties up some plotting involving an incestuous horror that begs for final justice. The characters in SEX LIFE -- the villains, that is -- are not what they seem, which is a nice change from the previous two tales, which are much more obvious in their villainry. The acting in SEX LIFE is, likewise, far better than in the preceding segments, HOME LIFE and WORK LIFE.

However, SEX LIFE (as with the rest of the segments) suffers from director-writer Anthony G. Sumner's insistence upon bringing in unrelated horror tropes (the legend of Countess Bathory, in this case) that have no business in the movie at all. Sumner shoehorns various in-jokes and references as if to tell the viewer he knows his stuff about Romero, Sam Raimi, and David Cronenberg -- as well as the more arcane trivia, such as Bathory. This indulgence takes away from the basic storytelling, though, which is otherwise good.

SEX LIFE is good enough to stand alone without the baggage of 3 SLICE's framing story or the other pieces, of which the framing story is the most valid. It conjures a spooky was-it-a-dream attitude brought into focus via some supernatural folderol involving personality transfer; there is also a clever use of bringing in characters from the other episodes to create mild chills.

The second segment, HOME LIFE is also smartly framed, presenting some truly frightening ghost children who haunt the very pregnant protagonist. But the piece is frankly overlong and the nice build-up of suspense is damaged by a very messy, gory finale. Here, again, Sumner has a handle on special effects sequences but tends to fall back on cheap tricks instead of trusting in what is essentially decent storytelling.

The bane of many low-budget horror movie directors is they give up and rely on banal in-jokes and references to other movies to cover up obvious plot holes; or, they are just lazy and think a good wink and a nod in the direction of zombified George Romero-isms will tide them over. Meanwhile, the audience feels cheated. Sumner cheats us in the latter way in the first tale, WORK LIFE. An ostensible comic-gore romp, this segment offers a nerdy office worker who feels slighted and sends out his "zombie email virus" disk to infect the world. His transformed colleagues become drooling EVIL DEAD-like zombies and chase him around until destroyed by gun-toting government bio-terror soldiers, in the manner of Romero's THE CRAZIES.

In spite of these excesses, Sumner is a talent to watch. 3 SLICES OF LIFE succeeds admirably in some ways, especially in the last segment. Its failings may be chalked up to a filmmaker simply trying to bite off more than he can chew.

The actors wrote the other reviews
quikzxr10 June 2011
This was a truly horrible movie. Production value was extremely low, but not in a good way. This movie just has nothing and that's really amazing cause even a blind squirrel gets a nut sometimes. To start with there is really no coherent story line. To follow it up the acting was more like something I would expect to see in a 2 grade elementary play. And for the third strike there weren't even any decent looking girls to help pass the time. After the first story I was ready to turn it off but instead I went to IMDb.com and saw the good reviews and thought maybe one of the other stories would have some redeeming factors, unfortunately I was wrong if you have already rented this movie quickly burn it.

I love good horror anthologies. This ain't one of them.
James967016 June 2011
Just read the reviews. Very easy to tell that they're written by people involved with the movie. Half of them were surely even written by the same person as they end in the same way, with an enthusiastic, "If you want to see a great movie or great horror or a good time or whatever, see Slices of Life" followed by an exclamation point. It's just sad that someone would go to that much trouble to get people to see a movie that's so terrible. Don't have much to say other than that. I get the appeal of wanting to make movies, it's what I'm going to school for. I think it's disheartening to see that some people worked so hard (it isn't easy, I know that, whether you're making something good or bad, filmmaking requires some real effort) on something that turned out to be garbage.

All that there's left to say is, if you want to see a great horror movie with gore-galore and plenty of laughs..... well then maybe you'd be better off seeing something else!

Warning: Do not waste your time or money!
rlm102019 June 2011
As a fan of low budget and indie films I was so disappointed in this movie. I liked the concept of the three part anthology, however it was so poorly written it just fell apart. The first part "Work Life" was the stupidest thing I've ever seen. I could tell from the very beginning I made a mistake when I choose this movie, but I kept an open mind assuming it has to get better, disappointingly it was just one big mess. I have seen better acting in grade school plays, seriously it amazes me that these "actors" are not embarrassed by this disaster of a film. It was not scary, suspenseful or even humorous! Just sad, so sad that this ever made it to my Video Store and I was lured into renting by the interesting cover. Perhaps the only interesting thing about this film, was it's DVD cover.

Take heed and don't waste your hard earned money on this.

One of the worst movies ever - and not in a good way
baronsamstag20 June 2011
I do love Horror movies. I do love B-movies. And hell yeah, I love myself a good trash movie every now and then. But this - uh, movie - this is one of the most boring, lame and totally dumb films I have ever seen. Don't even think about watching it. This movie totally sucks. The acting is bad. The gore is idiotic, lame and cheap. The story lines do not even exist. THIS SUCKS. I read some of the first reviews, but like my predecessor said, they must have been friends of either the director or the production company. No person in its right mind could enjoy this. Not even the director can. Every 3rd rate Italian zombie flick of the 70s had more ideas, better plot and more talented actors than this stupid piece of crap.

A truly awful film.
thomasadewald18 June 2011
This movie was forced upon me at a friends house and I should be clear that I did not enjoy it at all.

Firstly I'd like to mention the acting. There is little to no acting in this film at all. Each one of the "actors" puts up a truly terrible performance and I don't believe that it's a matter of them trying to do it on purpose, these are just purely untalented people.

The production value of the film is also laughable. I see no real reason why this movie should have played anywhere other than YouTube. It looks like some kid filmed it and used any number of computer programs to add his own gore and silly effects after he was done.

The stories themselves were pretty predictable as you could easily tell how they were going to come twisting around since the poorly written script and even more awfully acted portion instantly gave away any surprises that would be coming later in that particular story.

This has to be one of the most awful "films" I've ever seen, if not the absolute worst. I would not suggest to anyone to spend a cent on seeing this atrocity to film. Though there was ONE bright spot in the whole film: it came at the end when the movie was over.

Please don't waste your time!!
fkafady6 November 2011
As everyone else already mentioned above about the movie every little fact is completely legit. From my personal POV let me give you a simple example of what this movie would make you feel like. I am the kind of person who never comments on you tube or public forums as I think it doesn't matter what one thinks by stating your opinion,I have been using IMDb for almost three years but literally after watching this movie I registered to this site just to write this stuff about the stupid joke I just witnessed which people consider a "movie". I have seen students with no experience or funds making and posting better short clips/movies/songs/spoofs on Youtube than this pathetic movie, Not only it disappoints you for seeking a good horror movie but it will make you hold a grudge against these no life actors who made this terrible joke.If this is what they call acting is,then I guess I'm done watching movies... It is so lame and badly acted that words aren't enough..the only way one can understand the viewers pain is to actually watch the movies themselves.. Please take my word for it,Go spend those two hours with your family, friends or go do anything in general,anything....anything will be way more worth than this POS...

I had nothing to do with the making of this movie!!!
IFeelCream16 June 2011
Reviews such as those peppered throughout this page really annoy me. Making bold statements as fact such as 'only people involved in this movie submitted all the decent reviews' are ridiculous, because how could you possibly know that!? I can safely I am not a relative of the film makers; I wasn't involved in the production, nor was I an actor in the film. I am purely a horror movie fan with a great love of independent cinema. Yes, you get a lot of poorly made duds in indie cinema, but you also get a lot of gems. Slices of Life is a gem.

Focusing on three stories (Work Life, Home Life and Sex Life) with a genuinely intriguing wrap around story (featuring a very sweet and vulnerable Kaylee Williams) the film far exceeds expectations considering its very low budget.

The first tale 'WORM' (Work Life) is a hilarious story of a nano virus gone horribly wrong; resulting in a blood bath of body horror and out and out gore. It's basically a zombie tale with a techno twist. I thoroughly enjoyed this segment; it's just a gruesome good time. Admittedly it is the least enjoyable of the three but that isn't to take away from its worth.

Second up 'Amber Alert' (Home Life) is a dark tale of kidnapped children, a young pregnant woman haunted by demonic forces and a deeply disturbing truth which rears its head at the end in gory fashion - *ahem* sledgehammer scene!!! Toya Turner as the pregnant-lead-in-peril shines here as her character 'Vonda' and she really raises the bar for acting within independent horror.

Finally you have the craziest segment of the bunch 'Pink Snapper' involving a brother and sister on the run, a house masking a terrible secret and gore galore. Deneen Melody plays the perfect damaged women character, 'Susan', in this tale who, after supposedly killing her abusive uncle, stumbles upon an even greater horror, along with her brother Eric (Galen Shloeming). I wouldn't want to give too much away about this short except to say it may make you the cross your legs tightly in its final moments! This one was my favourite of the bunch and really ended the anthology part of the movie on a blood splattered high.

The wrap around segment ties things up in an interesting and highly original fashion but again I wouldn't want to spoil anything. Slices of Life is one of those indie horror flicks that needs to be seen – it's well made, well acted and really delivers the horror goods. I am sure I will be accused of being the director's brother on the back of this but I don't mind - I truly loved Slices of Life and I know it's very quickly finding its audience which is just fantastic.

Cheap and Cheesy exploitation
peteranderson97526 June 2011
Or 3 Slices of Life as the film seems be called in the credits is a low-budget anthology film featuring amateur actors and lots of gore. There is also nudity too.

Synopsis: there are four stories here including the wraparound story Sketchers - A young woman wakes up on the lawn of motel with no memory of who she is. She is told that she works at the motel and is put back to work by the constantly inebriated owner. While there she here's voices telling to open one of three flesh-bound books of sketches. As she reads each the film fades into to tell the story. As each story ends she find that they are describing real events W.O.R.M – a lonely nerd working in the basement of a large marketing company thinks he has found a solution to getting people to like him but his plan goes very wrong. Amber Alert – A pregnant woman finds herself haunted by visions young girls who have gone missing in her neighbourhood. Pink Snapper – A brother and sister go on the run to escape a sexually abusive uncle. They find an unconscious man on the road by a large house. After taking him to the hospital they return to house and find his daughter locked up in the basement.

The amateur acting film is definitely going to be a major turn-off for most people especially in the wraparound story but I kept watching and I have to say that the stories and the special effects really made it worth the effort. This film reminds of the type of films Frank Henenlotter makes, cheap and cheesy exploitation films with gore by the bucket. If you like films like Frankenhooker or Bad Biology then you may also like this.

Poor and boring movie
JohnyR8222 January 2012
This was bad. And I mean really, really bad. From the first few minutes of "Slices of Life" you can clearly see that this movie will be dumb, dull and amateurish - but in fact it is much worse than one might imagine.

In this textbook example of mediocrity you can find more or less each and every aspect of a horrible movie: annoying and stupid characters, senseless and retarded plot(s), terrible sound and miserable special effects. And of course basically non-existent acting in general.

Considering that it was just an indie movie without a huge budget, I would gladly overlook those poor effects and maybe the stiff acting - but the plot was so stupid (in all short stories) and there were so many flaws and continuity errors, that there is no excuse anymore.

This was really one of the worst movies I've ever seen.

I want my time back! Awefull movie!
garbagecan028 December 2011
Warning: Spoilers
What a total waste of time! When i read the review, the idea looked nice: 3 stories in one movie.

The opening looked promising, a girl wakes up, confused, and is put back to work by her (weird, drunk?) boss. She sits at the reception of a motel and finds a big book. When she reads it, you see the story.

The idea of the first sequence is nice; to program people to like you. The acting is terrible though! Really dreadful..

The second part is better, at least for the acting, and has a better storyline. Though, the plot in the second part is given away to soon in my opinion. They could have done more with this part.

The third part was completely insane.. and i do NOT mean that the acting or the story is so nice/great: A brother and sister escape from their father, who sexually abuses his daughter. In the end, an alien sort of parasite turns women in lustful monsters and kills everything on its path. Weird story..

Overall, the zombies in the movie look like they have been made by the "zombie booth" app for your smart phone, awful and not scary at all. I laughed out loud a couple of times because of the crappy sfx and storyline.

I recommend to NOT watch this movie is you are an "experienced" horror fan, you will end up laughing out loud and regret the fact that you wasted an hour and a half of your precious time. If you are a beginner with horror movies, this one might get you to know the horror genre in a funny way. Even then i would not recommend you to watch this movie, but instead look a bit further.

The idea of the movie is nice, but the result is really disappointing and a total waste of time!

Slice of Close To Two Hours Taken From Your Life
Chrysanthepop21 August 2011
Watching a silly gory B-movie can be fun when you have gathered around with a group of friends expecting some cheesy fun. However, '3 Slices of Life' does not offer that because it scores very low on the entertainment quotient. Very poorly written and terribly executed (quite obviously this was made by an amateur), there's little that holds the viewer's interest. The only story that's even at least mildly interesting (if you can call it that) is Amber Alert but even that is ruined by sloppy writing and execution. The 'movie' looks as though it was shot with a poor quality home video camera. The slightly washed out color makes everything look pale and unappealing. The acting is just as poor with the exception of perhaps Toya Turner who seems to at least put some effort. The makeup and special effects are laughably bad and so is the desperate use of supposed metaphors. Obviously, I wasn't anything great or even good but at least something entertaining which '3 Slices of Life' fails to deliver.

Horror anthology low on scares and humor, terrible on acting and cinematography.
suite9215 October 2013
Warning: Spoilers
The Cycle Segment: Sketcher---Mira, Tiny, Irma

Sketcher is the overview segment. Mira wakes up low on contextual memories. The people near her advise her to read the sketch books that Mira herself supposedly authored. Oi, there's a rotary telephone receiver.

The first book was about WORM; the protagonist is an office drone named William, who works at Nimrod Enterprises.

After completing the WORM section, Mira talks to Tiny and Irma, then starts reading again. This time, it is the Amber Alert section of the picture book.

Vonda and Ally visit Mira, then Mira starts reading the Pink Snapper segment.

After Mira finishes Pink Snapper, a drunk comes in followed by Susan. Yes, the same Susan as in Pink Snapper. Susan makes it clear she's going to kill the guy.

Mira finds a second book. The voices in her head tell her to read the book and to remember. She goes to a suite where Irma and Tiny are. Irma speaks of regeneration. She had drawn Mira, who is a young version of herself. Mira kills Irma, and Irma's spirit (or whatever) passes to Irma as low energy lightning.

------

Work Life Segment: W.O.R.M---William

One meaning of WORM is the derisive nickname that a lazy co-worker gives William. His office is in the basement, and he circulates through the offices above doing computer waste pickup work. The other meaning, W.O.R.M., concerns controlling people remotely using nano-technology.

William has just gotten his online 'degree' (whatever that means) in computer programming. He tries to interest the people in the offices of Nimrod Enterprises about his fake accomplishment. The people around him are self-involved and delusional, as is William. William thinks he will get a promotion into R&D. Then he tries to join an online porn/companionship site. Not surprisingly, this does not go well for the inexperienced young man.

To get on top of things, William gets the 'Nano Idea' disk, loads it, and figures out how to use it. Right. In terms of motivation, William's aim is to make (literally, as in to force) other people to like him. What could possibly go wrong? Quite a bit. Everyone wants to see him since he unintentionally e-mailed the nano virus (nonsense, of course) to everyone in the offices above.

Unfortunately, the virus causes people to become zombies. The authorities contain this, and lock up William because he started it, because he did not turn into a zombie, and they don't understand why not.

------

Home Life Segment: Amber Alert--Vonda, Lamont, Ally

Vonda is quite pregnant. When she is alone for a short spell, the TV won't stay turned off, and she hears of several abductions of girls ages 7 to 10, including Ally. She sees Ally in her back yard. Ally acts strangely, and shows demonic transformations. Vonda goes back into the house, locks her doors, and tries to hold up while familiar things in her house change shape. She calls her husband Lamont to come home, then faints. When she wakes up, he is there. They discuss the missing girls; Lamont had not heard of Ally. She rewinds the TV, but cannot find what she had seen before.

Vonda has odd sightings at the grocery store. People seem to change before her eyes. She walks home, and finds a poster for Ally on the way. She telephones, in but the other end has never heard of Ally; the poster for Ally reads Amber when Vonda goes to quote from it. Vonda and Lamont get in an argument when he gets home. Lamont experiences the horror after that, seeing the abducted girls transformed into monsters. He gets a ride in his car, with the car under control of someone else. This does not end well for him.

Back at the house, Vonda has more visitations from the abducted girls/monsters. She gets to find out some of Lamont's secrets. The monsters come for Lamont (you will know why) as he's about to do in Vonda. The baby decides to show up about then as well.

This segment has a happy ending, except for Lamont.

------

Sex Life Segment: Pink Snapper---Susan, Eric

Susan gets a call from her brother Eric while her drunken cop uncle Jack sleeps. When she gets off the phone, he molests her again. Eric shows up soon, and engages the uncle, even though the uncle is heavier, trained, and stronger. Susan slams the uncle in the head with a skillet, very hard. They take the uncle's car keys. They take the car and put some distance between them and the dead uncle.

Eric wonders what to do. Good question. They go to a house where they have a connection. Eric starts screwing Elizabeth, which is a really bad idea. Elizabeth's father Edgar recognizes that Elizabeth had killed Eric using the sexual parasite in her private parts. Edgar shoots Elizabeth in the head, killing her. Susan is upset by the yelling. She races upstairs, misinterprets the scene, and uses a hammer to kill Edgar. Great stuff. Three dead and quarts of blood strewn all over.

She gets too close to Eric. Elizabeth wakes up just long enough to mark Susan with blood. The parasite leaves Elizabeth and enters Susan. That was quite a penetration.

Susan survives this, and heads home to the recuperating Uncle Jack.

Poor Uncle Jack. Sort of.

------Scores-------

Cinematography: 0/10

Sound: 8/10

Acting: 0/10 Hire some actors next time.

Screenplay: 4/10 Not executed well, but there were story ideas in each segment, and the ending made sense, given the nonsense that preceded it. The editing was bad, the continuity was bad, and better direction might have gotten more out of the non-actors.

Fun Independent Horror Film
adam-ferguson0413 February 2011
I saw "Slices of Life" (called "3 Slices of Life" now apparently) at the Horror Society Film Festival in Chicago, and was pleasantly surprised by it.

The filmmakers' introduced the picture as a "micro-budget independent horror film", or something to that affect, and that it took four years to make from start to finish. "Slices" hearkens back to those horror anthologies of the '80s where there are a number of story segments (in this case three of them) along with a wraparound story that brings them all together. Each story has its own tone, look, and feel that probably owes much to the film's length of production, with each segment looking better than the last. I don't remember the segments names, but story-wise there are Office Techno-Zombies, Demon Kids, Vagina Monsters, and Magic Books of Flesh! I went with a couple of friends, and each of us had a different favorite story segment.

Considering how low budget the film must have been, the end result is very impressive. Overall "Slices" is pretty fun and twisted, and doesn't take itself too seriously. Check it out if you get a chance!

Really enjoyed this...

Warning: Spoilers
This is a really low budget movie but I totally enjoyed it. The stories are fun and have a twist, the production value and effects are really good and it never takes itself too seriously. I thought the second story was the creepiest, but the first and last segments had some really incredible outrageous moments. I recommend this to low budget horror fans who liked the first Evil Dead, Basket Case, Bad Taste and other imaginative low budget horror movies. It definitely has that low budget-indie feel to it but you quickly forgive that because you immediately get sucked into the story.I loved the concept, plus there are definitely some very creepy and bloody moments.

Slices of Life delivers!

Warning: Spoilers
This is by far the best indie horror film I've seen, and I've seen many! The production quality is that of any studio offering. The wrap around ties each story together nicely. There's enough zombies to make any Romero fan happy, enough demons to make Hell feel full and enough blood to fill up an Olympic sized swimming pool, oh yeah and a parasite that is sure to become the film's mascot. what Anthony Sumner and company has made is a future horror classic. This anthology is simply right on par with last years Trick 'R Treat and it's earlier predecessor Creepshow. A welcoming anthology that all horror fans should check out. Don't miss this movie!

Slices... excellent!
firemanhank30 October 2010
Our evening at the Portage Theater was fantastic! Meeting friends to premiere Anthony and Eric's film was a very special experience for us! The setting was beautiful, and the build-up to the introductions and the start of the film was the event of the evening! "Slices of Life" was a non-stop ride into the terror that consumes our lives! To see the trilogy come to life on the big screen was an experience we will never forget! Penny's fingernails digging into my arm and hand throughout the three "slices" evidenced the suspenseful intensity of each vignette! Anthony's writing and directing and Eric's cinematography brought to life the anguished and tormented characters, so well portrayed by the wonderfully-talented actors! We are blessed to know and love some of the finest talent and leaders in the world of horror! Congratulations to all, who were involved in this marvelous project!

Creepy and fun
jyy00110 February 2011
I saw this film at its premiere at the Chicago Horror Society Festival and found it to be a lot of of fun and pretty creepy. Slices of Life is an anthology of three short horror films with a wraparound story to tie the films together. The great thing about this film is that there is something for everyone in it - zombies, sex, ghosts, murderers, incestuous overtones, man-eating lady parts, and a LOT of blood...it's nearly impossible to be bored by this film! The stories themselves are a lot of fun - very reminiscent of Tales from the Crypt, Creep Show, and other 80's horror. Also, there are some standout stars such as Toya Turner and Deneen Melody. These are definitely actresses to keep your eye on!

Check out Slices of Life - it's a great low-budget indie horror movie that feels like a 80's film. You won't be disappointed!

Great Film!
Keith_E13 February 2011
I saw Slices of Life at the Dark Carnival in Bloomington Indiana. I was not entirely sure what to expect, but really enjoyed this film from beginning to end! The 3 stories are unique and enjoyable and put cool twists on the typical horror staples of zombies, vampires, and ghosts! Every story pulled me in, kept me interested, and kept me guessing. The story that ties all the other stories together is great too, and really blew me away at the end! This is definitely a breath of fresh air to this genre a worth a view or two!I thoroughly enjoyed this film and look forward to seeing it again! I recommend this movie to anyone looking for a good horror movie that doesn't take itself too seriously.

Even love the initials-S.O.L. that spell out the movies title. Great cast, awesome stories that are not dissimilar…Just all profound. Individual story teases-W.O.R.M.,has a great feel to it,And no lack of effects…all cyber geeks take note,Please. AMBER ALERT – Wow,Just WOW. They even used children of the right age and the story was so,so well thought out..Bravo! PINK SNAPPER,No guessing just rent it for the surprise and there are lots to behold…Very clever ending and these all seem to have a moral to them,Huh..Try to get one out of SAW 13. Wrapping all this up is SKETCHER,Kind of has a EVIL DEAD tome look. Please Anthony G. Sumner and Eric Richter take a bow,Job well done …Good movie = Worth the rental fees.

superb indie horror
chadedwards8011 June 2011
Mr. Anthony G. Sumner has hit a bulls-eye with this chilling omnibus involving zombies, sexual parasites, serial killers, demon children, etc. SLICES OF LIFE really does have something for every horror fan. There's gore-galore for the bloodthirsty, but there's also some truly great storytelling to be found here. The first segment, "Work Life," focuses on an unpopular clerk at a Nano Technology firm who unleashes a bizarre virus that transforms the workers into an assortment of zombies. "Home Life" tells of a young pregnant woman who is tormented by visions of demonic children while a series of local girls mysteriously disappear. In the final segment, "Sex Life," a young brother and sister flee a sexually abusive home life and seek refuge in a countryside Victorian manor, where further horrors await them. The acting, writing and direction all achieve consistently high standards...and the special effects will truly blow you away. This indie film truly is better than any big-budget studio horror produced today.
