Excellent first episode
welshNick17 January 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Very good first episode.

Kathy Bates shows she is still a great actress with a very polished performance as a patent lawyer who after being fired is now defending the less well off members of society in the criminal court.

This is of course a very well used and very successful formula for TV having been used many times before in for example Petrocelli. There is a good injection of humour and the three main players have a very good chemistry with each other.

It remains to be seen if it will survive as it has been put up against Hawaii five-o which may prove to be a serious mistake as far as the ratings go.

This is well worth watching and taping if you are an addict to the not very good drama from Hawaii.

so far so good
diroffers22 September 2011
For some reason, this show reminds me of Eli Stone - a good-hearted person is thrust into a situation they would not necessarily choose to be in begins using their talent as an attorney to help those who really need it most rather than to help themselves. I actually enjoyed Eli Stone and hated to see it get cancelled so soon. In comparison, Harry's Law does not have those wonderful hallucination fantasies, but the characters certainly are quirky.

I enjoyed the first season. I think it was aired either in a convenient time slot or when everything else was in re-runs. Either way, the schedule worked out for me so that I was able to watch the show.

Unfortunately, in its current time slot, Harry's Law will probably not be people's first choice to watch. It could be the demise of the show. My own personal concern with it is that the story can only go so far before it either becomes too predictable or too boring. Let's hope that's not the case.

Season 2 changes take it from a 3 to a 7!
puppyaddict24 September 2011
I wasn't going to watch the second season, abs in fact, idthought the first season so bad that I didn't expect it to get renewed, but since I hadn't removed the series from my dvr, the season 2 premier popped up and I decided to see if it was as lackluster and childish an effort as season 1. So glad I did! With the changes he's made, Kelley has thankfully redeemed himself from something I just couldn't comprehend he'd put together after his past works. Even amidst all his goofiness, at least his prior shows' premises were interesting and seemed rooted in cases that you could believe might actually progress in such ways. Not so with Harry's Law, just one ridiculous premise after another lacking more than an ounce of reality here and there, without the extreme kookiness that allowed us to excuse such cases with Ally McBeal. In season 1 the gang members came across as something out of a 1980s after-school special. They weren't scary or threatening; they were pretty much comical in a show that was trying to be a drama first and foremost. Bates seemed to be trying too hard to be crotchety just for the sake of giving the world the finger, and she was just too contrary and frankly, unlikable to make the humorous moments seem to fit well in the same show with her. This season, something has changed, and it's not just the cast. Bates shows her fatigue over last season's ordeal; at first I thought the actress was ill, but now I think it's an intentional acting choice for the character. The characters aside from her, both her secondaries and the clients, are more interesting and believable. Suddenly there is depth in a show that couldn't seem to decide if it was a comedy with occasional serious moments, or a drama with comic elements. Thankfully, Kelley seems to have decided it is a drama with "real" people, each with their own personalities and not one-note caricatures but multiple-faceted, fairly realistic human beings. Molina as a starting guest star is a good move as well. I will actually watch this season, and changing my mind so strongly about a show is rare for me. Give it a shot; I will be watching at least a couple more episodes to see how it goes, but at this point I think it has ten times the promise of last season.

Out with the old and in with the new
carebearcaryn2121 October 2011
What happened to this show now that we are into season two. They changed the set-up, they haven't emphasized anymore that they are still in a bad neighborhood, they wrote out Malcolm and Jenna, they have added new players without even blinking, and what happened to their cases? They used to do pro bono work and help the community which included a lot of black people. So far I don't see any of that in season 2 and I don't like it. They need to go back to the roots of the show and what it was originally based on. Who cares about making money? I loved the show because Harry helped the people. She's still helping people, but the clientèle has changed and I do not know why.

Top Drawer in Every Respect!
mmaharis21 January 2011
This show was excellent, filled with insightful views and charged emotion about our flawed criminal justice system. Rightfully so.

The script was so very true to life in the criminal courts that it brought me to tears.

Stellar performances all around, I love these characters. If only there were young attorneys like the young patent attorney in our courts.

The shoe store idea as her office make me smile... Bring it on ladies!

The metaphysical ingredients are so refreshing. They lighten the serious issues that the script addresses.

David Kelly you've done it again... from the heart. Thank you.

Please, NBC, give us more!

Looks like another lawyer tv series
cardd-4193927 February 2020
So the creator of this is David E. Kelly, the same David E. Kelly that created Boston Legal. Don't get me wrong I liked Boston Legal and Harry's law its just the similarity between Denny Crane and Tommy J is the same. I just wish they continued the same story in season 1

A Real Winner
lisa_chioda17 January 2011
Not since Boston Legal, The Closer, and Saving Grace have I been so excited about a new show. I can just feel it, I have fallen for this show. Boston Legal was my all time favorite. I went into mourning when it went off the air. I bet this will be as good, especially since it is written by the same awesome writer as Boston Legal. I cannot wait until next Monday to see the next episode. Harry's Law combines social issues, work issues, and life issues with comedy in a way which will grab anyone who gives it a watch just once. There are very interesting characters in this show. As you watch, you think you know what will happen, only to be shown that what you may assume is not what actually is. Very astute writing and casting of the characters. Each character shown in this first episode was a person you could relate to, or was in a situation you could relate to. I gasped, I laughed, I got angry, I got worried, and finally I felt a sense of relief that maybe, just maybe everything would be okay, especially if this show comes back year after year. Cathy Bates and the supporting cast are a perfect compliment to each other.

it sneaks up on you
jpebbles3725 January 2011
this a show that sneaks up you and you do not even expect it to be great and entertaining. I was bored and watched this at 2 am and was so entertained by it. They promote all the shows that have sexy, skinny girls or sexy men in them and forget to promote a really great show that is interesting and just amazing. I never liked Kathy Bates before in movies, but in this television show is really amazing. the whole cast works well together and the characters are just superb. I just can not believe that they finally came out with something that is good and not about clothes and design and rich people in big expensive house. It is about everyday people who need help and there is someone out there to help them this time,.

What happened?
akulier22 November 2011
Can anyone please let me know what happened to this great show? A few days ago, I discovered it and watched season 1 within only 2 days; I was simply hooked. A charming, touching and funny show with an incredibly great Kathy Bates. Finally a show again that I really loved, some parts even had what I call "West Wing"moments.

And now - this is essentially a completely new show where they have left the two main characters, but changed every possible aspect of it, including the wonderful soundtrack music. I mean it is still quite good, but just your average lawyer show just the same as they have been produced for the last 30 years. Any explanation for that or a reaction from the network?

Kathy Bates
samshaw9118 January 2011
God I love KATHY BATES!!!!!! Great great job!!!!!! Loyal and devoted fan forever! It was funny, refreshing, warm, friendly, and good. I felt good about watching it and I felt good after watching it. I loved all the characters, even the so called bad guys. It felt kind of like watching Royal Pains and Memphis Beat. You kind of know where it was going, and that was OK because we don't always have to be mentally challenged to enjoy something. The co-stars, (the little blonde from Hair Spray) was just huggable and right for the role, as was the mother of the boy who was on trial. I wish I could remember their names! Can't wait for next week!

Completely tanked after season 1
allprosper13 December 2022
I realize this is old news because this show is now a decade old but I'm just catching up to it. Apparently my opinion is not unique in the disappointment of changing the entire show to resemble some rendition of Boston legal. The quirky dynamics of the first season which was the foundation of the show was completely trashed apparently. But as far as I'm concerned that decision trashed the show because who needs another Boston Legal that's already been done. To show has no chemistry anymore. I won't be watching anymore episodes one episode of season 2 was enough for me. Which is a shame because I was perfectly prepared to binge the entire series until they tanked it.

What happen to Harry's Law
njhood-911-205797 November 2011
So disappointed in this season of Harry's Law, its very unlike season one. I've been listening to other viewers, whom is also disappointed with this season. Needs more acting, not more actors. What happen to the cast from the first season. I was looking forward to seeing some of the cast from the first season, they're are the ones that made the show worth watching. The show was based on Harry leaving Corporate America, coming to the "Hood" to help the ones whom needed legal representation, that couldn't afford a lawyer. I feel if the show don't make a change soon, I don't know about season 3. I'm sure this season's rating is much lower that season 1. Hurry and bring back some episodes like last season. That's what the viewer enjoyed.

Wonderfully creative and entertaining show
pingidjit1318 January 2011
Warning: Spoilers
I'm not sure what show the other reviewer was watching because Harry's Law was fantastic. I am a huge fan of Kathy Bates so maybe I am not entirely impartial but I found this show to be clever, witty, intelligent and very entertaining.

The other reviewer had way too many expectations from one episode. It was just the pilot. This is where we ARE suppose to find out about the characters and so the focus was rightfully towards them. Yes the 'You're out of order' speech is something we have heard before, but that was the point. He was trying to point out just how stupid the case was and succeeded. Kathy Bates character managed to get in 2 accidents, defend a client, hire staff, meet the locals and find more new clients. Sounds like she did a heck of a lot to me. More than the girl whose only focus was on shoes.

I loved Harry's courtroom speech. It really showed her talent. I was also impressed by all the other actors. All characters were very believable and likable and I look forward to watching them every week. I very rarely openly laugh at a show and this was one time I did. Twice. I smiled, I cheered and I was impressed. This show is highly entertaining and anyone who didn't catch it missed out. I hope that Harry's Law will be around for awhile cause I see myself loving it thoroughly.

It is David E. Kelly!
flamingofarm7 March 2011
This is just one more great program that allows Mr. Kelly to deal with the many issues going on in this country and the world and bringing them to light via TV. He hits so many things right on the money unlike the politicians......common sense, doing what is right. Programs such as Boston Legal allowed us to examine so many things and it was done so well. Harry's Law has just begun and I can see Mr. Kelly's thumb print already and I give him allot of credit for his story lines, thought process and the realization that TV can be a good thing to enlighten people about what is going on (or not going on). Thank you David for seeing it and saying it the way it is; always look forward to your programs.

Kathy Bates, as always with her big heart and practical humor!
danlagioi22 January 2011
people who rated this show with an average rating must not watch TV much to appreciate such rare ravishing piece of work. cuz to me, the pilot was amazing and just blew me away with kathy bates's powerful and charismatic persona. just like her previous works, her humanitarianism and powerful words rummaging through the show, giving it great meaning as well as a touch of her usual down-to-earth humor.

performances from the rest of the cast are great too, as i sense great energy and positiveness, especially the junior lawyer guy, hilariously astute lol.

overall, a very entertaining and meaningful show that evokes warmth and knowledge to viewers.

bottomline is TV nowadays are usually filled with dry and superficially cunning characters , rarely do u see someone as heartfelt, down-to-earth and warm as the veteran Kathy Bates. thus, we need to treasure it.

a real winner! i love it.

the ceaselessly brilliant and heart-warming Kathy Bates, love her so much!

the court cases are limited
artbetty59530 January 2011
Warning: Spoilers
I like Harry's opening moments getting a black guy to fall on her and a car hitting her; her spunky girl shoe salesperson; her Jr partner

...BUT and it is a big BUT;

i found the court cases they are deciding to take to have very little to like. The premise seems to be "if you feel sorry for the they defendants should just be found not guilty". Since the neighborhood where her office is seems to be where the stories come from, the stories don't seem to have much life or hope for change to them. i am over seeing a rotten nasty grandma getting off of an armed robbery charge Scot free when she held a gun to a mans head and threatened to blow it off for the money in the drawer.

The question will always be: how do we find entertainment and yet not be preached to by socialists who take themselves too seriously. We see you and do not agree.

Who's Harry? Harriet is no "Korn" Here ****
edwagreen18 January 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Given its liberal slant, "Harry's Law" promises to be an interesting show. When patent law gets her depressed, Harriet shows her boredom and promptly is fired. That's probably the best thing that has happened to her. Opening up a store with unlikely people, including someone she fought a patent case with, Harriet soon finds herself being caught up in a protection racket and defending someone whose on trial for buying drugs a third time. Along the way, her associate defends the protection con artist when the latter shoots a person holding up a store.

Liberalism abounds here, but thanks to the fine acting of Kathy Bates and the great writing, the show succeeds. It is well paced and Bates, as always, delivers her lines like the pro she is.

The nickname of Harry is inane, but who cares? We are about to embark on something really good.

Simple and Unrealistic
ajcoast17 January 2011
Warning: Spoilers
I just watched the premiere episode. Having really been looking forward to the show, I wanted to see it succeed. But having just watched an episode of the Defenders before watching this pilot episode, I was left wanting so much more. This show had a strong first few minutes. Funny, clever, and intriguing as far as characters are concerned. But the moment that two attorneys start arguing politics in a courtroom and another reprimands a judge and goes nuts without any consequences, I start to question how hard this show is trying. To me, it's trying way to hard. Viewers are too smart for these Hollywood antics. We've heard the "No, you're out of order" line too many times to accept it from an another show, especially one trying to make a unique name for itself.

Overall, I loved the antics and personality quirks I saw in the sneak peek clips much more than I did in the show because there just wasn't enough Kathy Bates in the pilot. The episode was split into telling not only her story but the story of what turned out to be three other co- workers. As far as the cases are concerned, both were handled unrealistically. A guy is busted for the third time for cocaine use and the judge lets him off? I understand the heart of the story but honesty it's hard for me as a viewer to see any light at the end of the tunnel when I know there's no case to be had. It's like the writers wanted to show off Bates' ability to fluff up the jury and then give us an unexpected twist with a guilty verdict and then surprise us again. In reality they just tied the story in a lot of knots and then had to get themselves untied quickly in hopes of capturing the emotional points with viewers and hoping they would overlook the craziness of the situation. Unfortunately the suspension of disbelief for this show's credibility is quickly lost the moment any of the court scenes began.

I really hate to be so critical of a show but there's just so much potential with Bates' character if the writers would stay away from cheap thrills and easy payoffs, stop complicating the story with unrealistic speeches and lots of political dead weight, and for goodness sake give Harriet something to do! She spent almost the entire show getting hit by cars and walking around with her arms at her sides. Brittany Snow's blonde secretary did more work miraculously cleaning up a filthy shoe store in the course of a few days than Bates' did solving the case. I wanted her character to shine but how can it when the first case she's given is one that is impossible to solve because there's no mystery!?! "We can't win this case", that's what she says. And as a viewer you totally agree with her. You're not even holding out for the bit of evidence that will save them because there's no one to save. The guy's guilty. This all boils down to writing. Change writers, save the show. Keep going with this simplistic, political- talking-point mediocrity and Harriet will be better off selling shoes.

One of the Best Shows this Fall (2011)
Hackintosh6 October 2011
Having received a major facelift from last season (which was a 12-episode mid-season replacement), with better exterior sets, a new, modernized office, less emphasis on the "shoe store," and the addition of lawyer Tommy Jefferson as a regular cast member, Harry's Law has come a long way after it's summer hiatus.

The show is a combination of the gravitas you found with The Practice and the silliness of Boston Legal, and it should move ever so quickly toward being more like The Practice and tackle tough cases as it did in the three-episode story arc that kicked off season two.

Anyone familiar with David E. Kelley's other shows (like the two mentioned above) and his writing style, Harry's Law won't be that much of a departure from his previous efforts. He created and wrote most of the episodes for Picket Fences, Boston Public, and a few others that lasted 4+ years. I'm hoping Harry's Law's ratings give it a chance to continue a good 5-year run (at least) if the writing/plots remain top-notch.

Character casting this second season has been superb, with Jean Smart and Alfred Molina guest starring in the first three episodes. Having just left as a regular cast member of L&O: Los Angeles as it was prematurely canceled and was doing great as far as ratings were concerned, even the repeats, it was good to see Molina again in a character-driven role.

Kelley's writing is top-notch as usual, with only the occasional stumble, though I think that has more to do with editing the show down to 40 minutes as Kelley is a proficient writer who's characters can have five-minute polemics at a stretch. Maybe one day they'll release uncut versions of Harry's Law before the network editors took an ax to them.

I gave it 8 stars because I really can't stand the music as it reminds me too much of Boston Legal and '70's porn. :) I also knocked off another star because Tommy Jefferson is basically a clone of Denny Crane (William Shatner) of Boston Legal. He even introduces himself and says his name repeatedly just like Denny Crane used to do (and which grew tiresome after a few episodes) on the aforementioned show.

I hope the writing continues to be great, and that we get to see Harry spend more time in the courtroom where Kathy Bates is at her best (as is Kelley's writing). And if Jean Smart comes back, that would be icing on the cake as her character was pure evil cloaked in a genteel southern accent.

I also hope they get rid of the B-roll shots of Cincinnati after every commercial break. They are a waste of time and most shows don't use them and just jump back into the episode. This gives the viewer more actual story time and dialog.

One of the most detailed Law series
ilcool9026 November 2013
Warning: Spoilers
When I got the news that this series was canceled I was really angry and confused. The series had good viewer ratings, so what pushed the TV channel management towards canceling it is beyond me.

Series is about a former patent law lawyer ( Cathy Bates ) who had enough of the same boring cases, got herself fired from a major law firm and started over in a former shoe shop in a bad neighborhood.

Cathy Bates plays an awesome role of a grumpy old lady who is actually tired of everything. Her law firm expands because more lawyers want to join her.

All of them have style of their own.

Series shows in a good detailed way how the case is being prepared and how are thing done in court. It's very educational, and because actors are so good in their roles and entertaining and you can't wait for the next episode.

Everyone who is interested in law I advice to go and watch the episodes.

NBC keep this one. It is a winner
rsda6 February 2012
The first season of HARRY'S LAW had me from the first episode. I was a sold viewer. First of all Kathy Bates is so watchable and the show has a typical, maybe a little too typical David Kelly feel to it. Kelly sometimes reworks his old characters like Denny Crane into the new Tommy played well by Chris MacDonald. The first season was excellent and now come season two (thank heavens) and we have many cast changes and a whole new feel to the series. I am not 100 per cent sure it was for the better but the the 3 episode arc with Jean Smart and Alfred Molina was superb. Please bring back Jean Smart. She is dynamite as always. Just pray NBC is patient with this series. Some have called it old hat but there is room for good comfortable TV series like this one.

good idea but too liberal
BAJesse1026 January 2011
Warning: Spoilers
I thought I would enjoy this new series - it has much to offer but when an old lady who robs a store with a loaded pistol is found innocent and set free is a little too much for me. Just because you are old (how old is old) and poor (how poor is poor) gives you the right to take from someone else and be ready to harm someone???? I can understand if the writers had her stealing food instead of the cash drawer and it turned out the gun was not loaded or a toy gun, but instead the writers gave the green light to take and harm if you don't have it - they pointed out it was the government's fault - why is it the government's fault if the woman did not have money - they did not steal from her or take away her funding - she just outlived her savings - I am a senior citizen and feel sorry for people in this person's predicament, but I also have a belief you can not harm people who have because she does not - even though the store keeper had funds in his cash drawer, he still has bills to pay, taxes to pay, and now he is out. I know it is a TV show, but let us not give crazies more ideas to commit crime!!!! There can be other ways to create a comedy.

January 24, 2011 show
eilidh194324 January 2011
If only...I actually cried during tonight's show (Jan 24). If anyone has every been in the condition of the older woman, they should understand. What is this country coming to? I was born here, and I've worked since I was 20, but I cannot live on my social security. Every penny I earned while working had to be used to survive, and I have a B.S. For 40 years, I've lived in a tiny (800 sq. ft.) duplex but no matter how much I tried, this was the best I could do.

I enjoy watching Hawaii Five-O, but when I saw Kathy Bates was coming to television, I changed channels for this time slot. I hope the producers continue to present the types of issues many Americans are experiencing today. It is a sad commentary that so many of our citizens are starving and/or struggling to survive in the richest nation in the world. Each time the rain falls, I feel it is God's tears.

Poor Writing
tmcollis2 February 2011
I love Ms. Bates -- I love the show's premise -- I was really looking forward to it. I wanted to like it. But I cannot get beyond the ridiculous scripts. The writers seem to think that to win a case in court, all one has to do is have a cantankerous lady attorney stand up in the court and rant about the lack of justice in the world-- not about the facts of the case. But more to the point, they seem to think that judges would allow this nonsense in a courtroom. Come on, guys -- hire a legal expert to come up with some crafty legal moves (she's supposed to be a smart attorney), or have Ms. Bates resolve the case outside the courtroom through whatever shenanigans she can contrive. But the courtroom dialog is just insulting to our intelligence.
