One of my favourite moments of Reality TV.
Back in 2003, before we had Mythbusters, we had "Junkyard Wars" as it was called in North America and aired on TLC. It was one of my favourite programs, and teams of amateurs would scrounge for the materials to meet a specific challenge.
In this special episode three national teams (American, British, and French) of experienced engineers are given 20 hours to design and assemble a period appropriate aircraft (circa 1903-1909) using tools only tools from that era (although for FAA legal requirements, some modern components are used).
The teams are then travel to the Mojave Desert to fly their creations for 1/2 mile, and they're scored for time in the air, and the accuracy of their flight and ability to land at the finish line. The joy of seeing these vintage planes take to the sky (and the quick teamwork that went into their creation) is a marvel to behold. Each team takes a radically different approach to their designs. Two favouring historic designs (one which hasn't flown since 1911), while another team cobbles together a wholly original plane using elements from several famous aircraft from the early days of flight.
This episode has become a celebrated piece of TV history, and it is one of those must-see specials from the early millennium.
