Fair, It Gets the Job Done
ahmadz8393 November 2022
One can only hope that the show can get back to its strong points after the nightmare that was season three. The show's most significant problems have always been its large cast of characters, which the writers have struggled to give equal screen time to; Super Boy, who is clearly overpowered for a show of this scale, and the need to nerf him to keep the Titans one step behind; and the show's laughable treatment of Dick's character progression, with Dick essentially having to learn every season but learning nothing by the time the next season rolls around. Whether or not all these problems will be fixed this season is uncertain, but the premiere episode, "Lex Luthor," does bring some exciting new stuff, and I'm looking forward to what the rest of the season has in store.

Rating: 6.8/10.

Titans is back with a great premiere which focuses on strong acting and drama, Titus Welliver is terrific as Lex Luthor
Holt3445 November 2022
Written by Richard Hatem and directed by Nick Copus. The premise of "Lex Luthor": After Superman requests a meeting with Conner, the Titans travel to Metropolis for exclusive access to S. T. A. R. Labs. But when unexpected complications arise, including the re-emergence of Lex Luthor, Conner faces a tough decision.

So we're now in The City of Tomorrow, or Metropolis as it's official name is. Which is something the show has been building towards since season 2 when Conner made his first appearance, I'm glad he's getting a true story arc for this season. But the thing is, the cast is still large and I hope they don't do the same mistake as they did with season 3 which began strong but ended average. Too many characters but now they at least are a team, with STAR Labs they get the chance to get equipped and test their abilities and it's amazing to see the Titans being strong like they should be. With this season focusing more on Conner / Superboy, the show "Titans" continues the themes of family and especially the topic of fathers, previous season focused on Bruce Wayne for Dick Grayson, now it's Conner who's a clone of Lex Luthor and Clark Kent / Superman. The theme of family have always been with the show and it's a great theme to have in a show, mostly, Titans have succeeded with the execution. I think they'll execute it fine with this season, they probably learned from their mistakes. The writing was actually quite good, dialogue felt right for the characters and no real flaws in my opinion. The direction was strong, it feels like Nick Copus gave the actors good direction and had an overall fantastic vision for the story.

I found the action sequences to be a a highlight in this episode, with the sequence in LexCorp that was shot in a one take. The gritty and great action sequences remain great. The presence of Lex Luthor played by the brilliant Titus Welliver was why the scene worked as well as it did, just one episode in and I can say he'll be a highlight of the season, he made an impact in just one episode. Nightwing's fight sequence were also great, it was more a regular action scene though than the previous which had more drama. You also see how the budget have gotten higher, making Beast Boy accurate to his comic book counterpart, I really hope they keep his transformations up and not going the cheap route. Other performances I liked was Joshua Orpin as Conner Kent / Superboy, you clearly see how he has grown through the seasons, I think he'll handle the character and Conner's arc nicely. I also want to praise Brenton Thwaites for his performance as Dick Grayson/Nightwing, I just think he does a fantastic job at capturing the character, and finally as Nightwing. Can't wait to see more of him and the rest of the team. On the villain side, we got introduced to the Church of Blood and I found Joseph Morgan to be great as Sebastian Sanger/Brother Blood, he plays this terrifying figure nicely and I can't wait to see more of him and Mother Mayhem.

Episode 4.01 was all about world building, introducing new characters and locations and building the plot forward. It looks promising and I'm here to stay. "Lex Luthor" was a great episode that leaves you desperately waiting for the next episode. Titans is back, strong.

There's Good News and Bad News
Gislef25 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Good news? Titus Welliver is probably the best onscreen portrayal of Lex Luthor. And this is coming from someone who _likes_ Jon Cryer on 'Supergirl'. He's subtle, doesn't overplay the bald card, and is less the maniacal cackling supervillain of a Cryer or Hackman. I would consider Clancy Brown from the animated series as Welliver's as the closest, but Brown only did voice work. Welliver captures both the physical appearance and the voice, as well as the personality in general.

The script helps, as Lex isn't going up Superman for once but his pitting his wits and manipulating his "creation", Connor. Taking Superman off the board for an off-world mission seems kinda cheap, but it gives writer Richard Hatem the opportunity to put Lex up against someone other than his arch-nemesis, so it works out as a plot.

I also liked Lex sparring with Kory. Not only was Lex calmly eating while Kory beats his way through his security guards. But there was also the two of them chatting about Komand'r taking the throne of Tamaran, and Lex trying to get a rise out of Kory. Not only does she not rise to the bait, but she masterfully turns it around on Lex.

The bad news is that since Lex gets taken out like a chump, presumably we won't get to see Welliver as Lex again. Never say never, I suppose. Lex could have had a contingency plan, or we could see him in a flashback.

The overall bad news is that the rest of the plot, with Sebastian and Ms. Bennett and Azarath in general, is kind of muddles. We aren't given any reason to be involved with Sebastian. Sebastian runs a taxidermy shop and creates video games and has a big presentation coming up. Bennett helps Lex and then he kicks her to the curb.

Okay, this presumably will make more sense in future episodes. But I'm not watching those episodes, I'm watching this one. I want a reason to be interested in all of this _now_. World-building is great, but not at the expense of character development and an interesting story.

The Gar thing, with him getting a new outfit and a display of his abilities and his vision of the Tree of Skulls, is a good example of how they made the character interesting now and built a story. I just wish Hatem has put as much effort into Sebastian or Bennett. Like or don't like Jonathan Crane last year, at least the writing team put some effort into him on an episode-by-episode basis last year. I think he and Jason tended to jump motivation-wise from episode to episode, but at least the effort was there. This episode, not so much with Sebastian and Bennett.

The Titans themselves finally displayed why they consider themselves a _family_. I kinda miss Donna and Hawk, and where the heck is Dawn and Ravager? But I suppose seeing the core six members hanging around and being the core so that they don't keep rotating in and out is good. More Kory and Gar and Rachel and Connor isn't a bad thing. Moving the show to background, and ditching Jason, lets the production staff focus more on the team. The characters mentioned above all seemed peripheral last season to Nightwing and Jason and Crane and Gotham.

The integration of Kory (Lex's interest in her) and Gar (his visions of the Tree and the... Red?) is a good example. Last year we never really got much of the rest of the team because most of it was about Dick and Jason.

But that's just my opinion. I could be wrong. What do you think?

Exactly what they needed.
joshuastojka-501833 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
They took the fans advice and stepped up the episode. It was tense and exciting all the way to the final moments. I'm excited to see where it goes. Every character is doing the best to keep every moment in the episodes acting on point. The only flaw is we need superman after the teaser.

Lex luthor may be dead or it could be his evil plan all along but I'm along for the ride. Garfield is finally getting to see the full potential of his powers which is exactly what I was hoping for. Brother blood is starting to rise. I'm so excited for this season and I'd recommend it to anyone after this first episode. Glad they stepped it up mush watch.

The best DC series is back, baby !!!
ciobi-5117921 November 2022
I am a DC fan since i was a kid and i used to watch Batman The Animated Series, because i was hypnotised by the gothic designs and by the psychedelic vibe of the show and i think this series it is the only one which has something from that old vibe and this episode brings back some old memories and the music remains one of the greatest of this small screen era. The only thing i don't like in this episode is Nightwing's new 80's era goofy haircut, but in tbe rest, everything is alright, the girls are more beautiful than ever and the action remains very entretaining. I do hope although to see their Superman in this season, who seems to be the most omnipotent Superman ever existed.

Great Episode
friohandluke22 May 2023
Sebastian had a wonderful British James Remar quality about him. The brooding angst and anger that is just below the surface, ready to explode in screen at any given moment. I'm glad season 4 arrived and have been binge watching it from start to finish. Starfire is looking somehow more attractive that previous seasons (if thats even possible), Raven has truly grown up in front of us and the producers really did a good job evolving Drakes part on the Titans team. Robin is solid as ever and is truly the team leader in every sense of the word. Gars arc needed more time frankly but his story and the Red were definitely well done.

The Titans are Back: Entertaining First Episode
panagiotis199325 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The team is back! Damn I was really hyped to see Superboy meeting Superman, sad he didn't show up. Love seeing the team being goofy and having fun. Nice to see Star Labs, I wish this show had a speedster. Love how excited Tim is to get his own Robin suit. Im interested in watching more of Welliver's Lex Luthor. I wanted to watch Jon Cryer as Lex Luthor but I absolutely hate the Supergirl show so I didn't. Lex is dying? Damn. Im curious to see what are Lex's plans for Conner. Lex has ninjas working for him? He is into some weird stuff for sure. I love Lex's reasons for creating Superboy, really deep and interesting. I knew that Conner would choose to stay with Lex. Lex started puking and a huge snake came out of his mouth? What the hell is going on? Is he dead? He can't be. Decent cliffhanger. It was a good fist episode, I would like it to be a bit more thrilling but it was entertaining overall. My rating is 7.5/10.

Who wrote the screenplay?
damsel_cutv27 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Is this the dumbest show out now? Who wrote the screenplay?

Right, you had dreams of blood spilling from a smoothie and then from a box and you just don't tell, well done Rach!

Oh, a Gorilla-Velociraptor destroyed the lab, just let's pretend it didn't happened. "What happened, Gar?" "It's just that..." "nevermind, it's ok, nobody cares anyway. Hey Tim, here's a stick for you" "cool, thanks, I'll post on TikTok".

"Kory, you're using 8.1% of your kinetic mumbo-jumbo, you haven't figured out in a week and we have cracked it in seconds, but I won't explain, let's jump to the next scene!"

And if the Lex/Kory dialogue wasn't pointless enough, they sent ninjas to fight Dick. Ninjas! Can you believe it? ("I hate ninjas")

I'm hopeless about the other episodes and I'll watch them anyway to see where's the limit.

It's really baaaaaad
r-g-vos16 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Who wrote this? A four year old could have done a better job. This episode should be called Plot Holes The Seize Of A Medium Seized Country.

A few examples, Superman can fly around the world in a blink of an eye, but he can't drop by for a second to meet Connor. The time it took him to write a letter, he could have visited Conner dozens of times. And a letter? Seriously? Superman doesn't know WhatsApp? And why didn't he see him earlier? And what is with the whole merry field trip to the Superman laboratory anyhow? Why didn't they help out before? They sure could have used it.

The bizarre reaction to the incident with Gar: 'Your alpha-waves fluctuated slightly' Fluctuated slightly? He destroyed half a building for crying out loud and nobody seems to care.

I could go on and on, all in the first episode.

Sadly Titans and I will part ways. I was a fan, but there's a limit.
