Horror genre is one of the most controversial ones out there. Is it really okay for us to be that into bloody and violent stories of curses, ghosts, zombies and whatnot?
Some viewers just enjoy the atmosphere the creepy shows put them in, while the rest cannot handle a single glance at something disturbing (and there are always a lot of disturbing things).
Well, for those who like horror, there's good news: a real one is waiting for your attention on Prime. The show we're talking about has a pretty simple name: it's called Them, and the first season of the series was released in 2021.
Is Them Worth Watching?
It was a hit, but it didn't get the highest score from the critics. Them: Covenant followed a black family whose lives changed tragically after they moved to a disturbing all-white neighborhood.

The legacy of American Horror Story continues to haunt Amazon Prime. In 2020, the studio released Welcome to the Blumhouse, a feature-length horror anthology, and a year later another anthology called Them premiered, which was immediately renewed for a second season.
What is Them Season 1 About?
The first season takes place in 1953 when the Emory family moves to Compton, California. Mother, father and two daughters dream of settling down in a new place, but the residents of the prestigious suburb are hostile – the locals do not want a Black family anywhere near them.
The gossiping housewives and their superiority-obsessed husbands try to make Emory's life a nightmare. The neighbors are successful in their efforts, but the Emory family is already afraid, feeling the ominous presence of unexplained phenomena in their own home.
Them is filled with an alarming, at first completely incomprehensible tension that reigns in the new home of the main characters.

Plot: Set in 1991 Los Angeles, the story centers on LAPD Homicide Detective Dawn Reeve, who is assigned to a new case: the gruesome murder of a foster home mother that has left even the most hardened detectives shaken. Navigating a tumultuous time in Los Angeles, with a city on the razor’s edge of chaos, Dawn is determined to stop the killer. But as she draws closer to the truth, something ominous and malevolent grips her and her family…
Review: The first season of Them debuted on Prime Video close to the one-year mark after Covid-19. Marketed as the small-screen continuation of Jordan Peele’s brand of big-screen horror, the series blended social commentary, political relevance, and disturbing imagery as it chronicled the Emory family’s move to Southern California. Led by a great performance by Deborah Ayorinde, Them (subtitled Covenant) was almost too violent for its own good. While I enjoyed the first season,...

Forget American Horror Story, Prime Video Just Dropped Its Perfect Replacement With 100% Tomatometer
The detective genre mixed with something paranormal-ish has been a key to streaming success for quite a long time now — and Prime Video’s brand new series turns out to be one more proof for it.
Though it’s been only several days since Them: The Scare dropped on the platform and joined the first part of the whole anthology, Covenant, the show has surely managed to capture everyone’s attention and even now can boast of a perfect score.
Them: The Scare makes a big time jump compared to the first part that took place in 1953 and will now take the viewers to the 1990s. This time the plot follows LAPD Homicide Detective Dawn Reeve, who is portrayed by season 1’s actress Deborah Ayorinde, as she embarks on her own investigation of an eerie murder of a foster mother.

Them: The Scare, the newest entry into the black horror anthology for Prime Video, will blow your mind.
The follow-up to Them: Covenant brings the action forward in a few decades to 1991, where LAPD Detective Dawn Reeve will be embroiled in a case unlike anything she's ever seen.
And soon enough, her family will be affected in ways she never saw coming.
The series, born from the mind of its brilliant creator Little Marvin, has a robust cast. TV Fanatic was blessed to take part in the Them: The Scare press day, where we chatted with stars Luke James, Joshua J. Williams, and Pam Grier.
One of the biggest strengths of the Them: The Scare series is its fantastic cast, which brings this decidedly twisty and scary tale to life.
Luke James, from The Chi fame, steps into the role of Edmund Gaines and gives a scene-stealing performance.

If you've seen the trailers, then you know Them: The Scare will surely be unlike anything else on television.
The black horror anthology returns for a second season on Prime Video, with a new story and landscape at the forefront but the same scares the first season evoked.
TV Fanatic was lucky enough to participate in the Them: The Scare press day, where we chatted with series creator Little Marvin and Deborah Ayorinde, who returns to the series in a new role.
While the first season, Them: Covenant, was set in 1953 and followed a black family moving from North Carolina to an all-white neighborhood in Los Angeles, this season takes place in 1991.
The story stays in Los Angeles but changes the timeframe, introducing a new set of circumstances for the new cast of characters.
Little Marvin, the mastermind behind the innovative series, was inspired by many things when creating this universe.

Any prequel to the Alien series would face a challenge. If we forget for a moment that Alien 3 ever happened, the first two films in the series were absolute classics. They are as influential today as they were when they were first released in 1979 and 1986, respectively.
The main problem with 2017's Alien: Covenant was a departure from what made those two movies so good.
Too much tech, not enough tension
Alien and Aliens are big movies that benefited from an almost B-movie feel. Of course, filmmaking was very different when Ridley Scott's directing career was in its infancy, but you get the sense that he wasn't just working within constraints – he really understood his craft.
Alien: Covenant embraced CGI to such an extent that it often felt like it was so far removed from the originals that it was a different franchise. You certainly wouldn't have guessed that...

Them: The Scare is a second season of the popular horror series – though not quite as you know it. Instead the show returns with new characters, in a new setting, and for Deborah Ayorinde, this posed quite the challenge, having appeared now in both projects. We had the pleasure in speaking to the actress about this unique task set for her.
We also spoke to two newcomers to the show, in Luke James and Joshua J. Williams, as they speak about their roles, and their passion for horror. Naturally, we spoke to all three about collaborating with the screen icon that is Pam Grier. You can watch all of our interviews below in their entirety.

Since 1980, horror and sci fi fans have loved being scared by the Xenomorph and the soulless Weyland-Yutani corporation that wants to study it. Nearly everyone has controversial takes on various films in the franchise: "Prometheus" and Assembly Cut "Alien 3" fans, rise up. "Alien: Covenant" fans, look... we respect you, but that movie makes it tough. But no matter where you land, we're all in love with Ridley Scott's original "Alien." It's a love that's seen high school performances turn into breakout hits, and April 26th (chosen for the Lv-426 colony in "Aliens") become a fandom holiday.
We're always looking for more to explore from the franchise, although sometimes that desire turns into a be-careful-what-you-wish-for "Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem" situation. Despite the valleys of the "Alien" franchise, we're still hoping for the best from the upcoming "Alien: Romulus" and Noah Hawley's forthcoming TV series from FX. Meanwhile, we...

Prime Video’s Global Top has recently lacked some good old horror shows, with the prominent domination of the sci-fi saga Fallout and the superhero hit Invincible. However, their supremacy can be shattered by the upcoming platform’s horror show, which appears to be the continuation of the 2021 gripping anthology series.

There’s a persistent theory going around about a potential connection between Alien: Romulus and the original Alien. Potential spoilers ahead…
Nb: The following contains theories about Alien: Romulus that, if correct, could constitutespoilers.
It was revealed several months ago that the story in Fede Álvarez’s upcoming Alien: Romulus would take place between the events of Alien and Aliens. And as we saw in last month’s trailer, the space horror sequel certainly appears to lean more heavily on the Alien side of the equation, at least visually – the industrial, retro-futuristic corridors of its Romulus station are recognisably close to those of the Nostromo, the setting for 1979’s Alien.
There’s one theory doing the rounds, meanwhile, that suggests that Alien: Romulus’s connections to Ridley Scott’s classic could be more than skin-deep. The trailer appears to show that the Romulus orbits the same planetary system seen in Alien,...

The Curse of Oak Island team has begun excavating a new human-made circular stone feature in the swamp near Nolan’s Cross, which could be the spot where ancient Christian relics are buried.
This week’s episode started with disappointment. The rehabilitation and excavation of the Garden Shaft was the primary focus of this season, but it has been plagued with problems.
Dumas representatives informed Rick Lagina and the guys that approximately 479 gallons of seawater were currently gushing into the shaft, and pumping out such a quantity of water would make the whole structure unstable.
That means the project is on hold while the Dumas miners figure out what is the best option. Unfortunately, we are careering toward the end of the season, which sadly means that could be the end of the project for Season 11.
Thankfully, the guys have plenty to keep them occupied, and they’ve switched focus...

On The Curse of Oak Island this week, the team uncovers a brand new stone feature at the exact spot where an expert told them to dig for the Ark of the Covenant.
In recent weeks, researcher and symbologist John Edwards identified a couple of places along Nolan’s Cross where he believes Templar Knights have buried the Ark of the Covenant and possibly other ancient Christian artifacts.
John came to this conclusion after studying old books and documents that he believed used a cipher to reference the Ark, Oak Island, Templar Knights, and the Knight’s descendants in the Freemasons.
The researcher said that Nolan’s Cross was part of a bigger structure that marked a secret burial spot.
The guys wasted no time sending Billy Gerhardt and his digger into the area to investigate, and last week, he had already uncovered an unusually placed boulder. This week, Billy...

Curse of Oak Island’s Dumas Team worked on the Garden Shaft since last year, but now they finally got a breakthrough, they also hit a major challenge. It’s a different challenge from the mining permit issues, but it could be even harder to overcome for the History Channel treasure hunt.
Curse Of Oak Island Dumas Team & The Garden Shaft
Recently, a marker got everyone excited because it suggested that the Garden Shaft might be a way to assess tunnels. The quest to find treasure down there excites a lot of people. Some trinkets and a cross, plus a new silver find keep viewers coming back. However, some of them tire of nothing major happening but the garden shaft seems to be a major key to finding more.

It’s not long after Halsey, Miranda, and Kwan discover the ancient Forerunner device that Oni scientists and Unsc officers start chomping down on each other. They’ve been infected with the strange spore contained inside the device and now everyone, including Admiral Parangosky and Laera, are lunch. What the hell is happening in the Hahlo season 2 finale?
It’s time to meet the Flood in the alternate Silver Timeline. In a big twist, they’ve arrived much earlier than in the game the show is based on, already spreading beyond the Halo ring long before Master Chief and Cortana even have a chance to stop the alien parasite from consuming everything in its path. It’s perhaps the show’s biggest deviation from the source material and will likely mean the Flood storyline plays out much differently on TV than it did in the Halo trilogy.

It's been nearly seven years since Ridley Scott returned to the "Alien" franchise with the ever-divisive "Alien: Covenant." While we may not be getting a sequel to that film, Disney and 20th Century Studios are bringing the Xenomorphs back for another big-screen thrill ride in the form of this summer's "Alien: Romulus." Directed by Fede Alvarez, it looks like a return to the franchise's horror roots with new characters, a new ship, and familiar threats.
Alvarez recently spoke with Variety in honor of the recently released "Alien: Romulus" teaser trailer. The filmmaker was asked what he is bringing to the table for his film, which takes place 20 years after the events of the original 1979 sci-fi/horror classic. Alvarez, much like Ridley Scott and James Cameron before him, has a unique view of this universe. But his main goal? Make "Alien" scary again:

20th Century Studios have unleashed the first teaser trailer for Fede Alvarez's contribution to the Alien franchise with an all out horror edtion called Alien: Romulus. It's coming to cinemas on August 16th The hiring of Alvarez says something. Perhaps this is what the franchise needs to get back on its feet after the return of the original's director, Ridley Scott, with his ambitious Prometheus and Covenant films. To tap into what really brings us back to these films time and time again, to be scared out of our whits. There is not time to wonder and ponder the nature of the universe when it's trying to eat you. The breakout of facehuggers is something we haven't seen yet. Usually, the films have waited...

The Alien saga returns to its extraterrestrial roots with the franchise’s upcoming Alien: Romulus, a standalone installment hitting movie theaters this August.
The latest chapter takes place between the events of the franchise’s first two installments — 1979’s Alien and 1986’s Aliens — and judging by the teaser released Wednesday, writer/director Fede Alvarez brings Romulus back to the more horror-influenced, marooned-in-space vibe of those early Alien movies, with face-hugging xenomorphs aplenty in the brief minute-long preview.

This week on The Curse of Oak Island, the guys found multiple artifacts that featured precious metals such as silver and gold, and they found another item that could date back to the 12th century.
Also, this week, a researcher into Freemasons and symbols asked the guys if he could search the island for the Ark of the Covenant.
The archaeologists came up winners this week. Jamie Kouba found a piece that was 90 percent silver. The hand-forged piece was likely part of a decorative tassel.
The high silver content meant this was technically classed as actual treasure. Archaeologist Laird Niven admitted that in 40 years, he had never found anything like it.
So far, the guys don’t know how old it is or where it came from, but last night, that didn’t matter; they finally had treasure!
On the same day, Jamie also uncovered a copper button gilded with a thin layer of gold.

Death, destruction, and annihilation follow the congregation of alien zealots, otherwise known as the Covenants, as the harrowing impact of their attack on human establishments is showcased in the midpoint of the second season of Paramount+’s space epic series, Halo. In the previous season, Master Chief and his Silver team managed to bring the mystical Forerunner artifact back to Reach right from the Covenant home base of High Charity, and a severe retaliation was expected, which culminated in this season with Covenant’s invasion of Reach.
In the previous episode, Master Chief and his Silver Team were temporarily relieved of their combat duties by Captain Keyes (on the orders of Colonel Ackerman) due to the Chief’s insubordination, and his concern about the Covenant attack and the Cobalt Team’s status was deliberately covered up by the Ackerson-led Oni. Later, after it is revealed that the entire Cobalt team was Kia,...

The second season of Halo may be hitting too close to home for Pablo Schreiber’s Master Chief and Silver Team. After the destruction of Sanctuary in the premiere, John-117 suspects it’s only the beginning of a mass offensive that will eventually end with the Covenant invading Reach, the center of Oni and humanity’s military might in deep space. If Reach falls, there’s basically nothing stopping the Covenant from heading to Earth next.
The invasion of Earth is something that did eventually happen in the games. Although the series is set on a separate timeline than the games, this invasion feels inevitable on the Paramount+ series too, especially since no one in Oni command heeds Master Chief’s warnings that the Covenant have already infiltrated Reach. It’s only a matter of time before the Covenant make their move. And when they do reveal themselves,...

The box office success of Bob Marley: One Love following this week's Valentine's Day release is prompting Paramount to get its long-gestating Bee Gees biopic moving a little more quickly than before. According to Deadline, the studio has now put the script in front of Ridley Scott, and the director is making a deal to tackle it as his next film.
While it's hard to imagine Scott needing anyone's approval for a job, the studio executives were apparently over the moon with the footage from his Gladiator sequel and eager to have him sign on. And for his part, Scott already has a Bee Gees connection, having once been developing a film called Castle Accident with the band's manager to star musical siblings Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb that never came to fruition. But, assuming the biopic deal works out, now he'll get the chance to tell their story.

Put minds inside machines, and troubling consequences become inevitable. And things take an even nastier turn in Paramount+’s series adaptation of the beloved video game franchise Halo, where humans, forcibly stripped of their humanity, become the puppets of an autocratic regime and eventually confront the truth in the most unexpected ways. Spartans were designed to be mindless, immoral killing machines, assigned to serve the interests of humankind’s interplanetary colonial regime of the Unsc with complete adherence, without questioning. Dr. Catherine Halsey had helped Unsc select the perfect candidates for the Spartan Super Soldier programme by abducting children and suppressing their memories of past to make them controllable and help them adapt to the training from an early age. To double down on the effort of controlling the minds of the Spartans, she had even designed the AI Cortana, going against the wishes of Unsc leads. Just as they...

Media adaptations of beloved video game franchises have turned out to be the next big thing, as proven by the success of the Sonic movies, HBO’s The Last of Us series, Netflix’s Arcane, and so on and so forth. Partly due to the producers finally acknowledging the potential of video game narratives, and mostly due to assistance from creators who are passionate about the source material, fans have been catered to with faithful retellings of their favorite video game storylines. Unfortunately, fans of the iconic interplanetary sci-fi game series Halo cannot claim to have enjoyed the first season of Paramount+’s small-screen adaptation of the game series, which, in an effort to carve out its own place, became a far cry from the original saga.

Almost two years ago, the decades-long struggle to bring an adaptation of the beloved video game franchise "Halo" to life finally resulted in, well, a seriously underwhelming Paramount+ show. The fact that the live-action debut of the Master Chief, his Spartan super-soldiers, and their epic war against the alien Covenant had to be relegated to a streaming service, as opposed to receiving the full red carpet treatment on the big screen, was probably an indictment in and of itself. It spoke poorly of this irrevocably Silicon Valley-influenced studio system we currently find ourselves in, and of the lack of ambition and imagination of the decisionmakers involved. Ultimately, it also revealed our own shortcomings as an audience -- one that couldn't simply be satisfied with a number of tremendously well-realized stories told in their perfect medium.

The Top 10 Most Anticipated Horror Films of 2024 article and video were written by Mike Holtz.
We happen to be lucky enough to live in a timeline where horror is unquestionably crushing at the box office and otherwise. People are lining up in droves not only to see men in tights throwing down to save the universe in superhero flicks but to see monsters and ghouls doing horrible and heinous things to human beings. And no, I’m not talking about congress. I’m talking about some good old-fashioned wear your brown pants to the theater and leave the kids at home (or don’t I don’t judge) , horror flicks. I can’t promise you everything is going to be okay in 2024. Not with Ezra Miller roaming the streets, but I can promise you this… we’ve got a lot of great horror flicks headed our way. Probably. Well, they sound cool.
