You play as a soul fished up by a ferryman who wants to bring you to heaven, but you must first tell him your story to see if you are worthy.
The game is controlled by your eyes, you can interact with the world by blinking, but you when the metronome appears at the bottom of the screen blinking will cause you to jump to the next vignette. The time spent with each memory is fleeting but sweet.
Play the game without knowing anything else and you will have a blast, but in case you're not convinced I've written about my experience with the game below. There are no spoilers for the story.
The story comes across as very human. You have choices to make that make small impacts, but it's relatively linear. You struggle at some points, you have massive success at others. The relationship with your mom is strained but loving and your dad is just an awesome guy.
Everything seems to be wrapped up nicely and I was thinking wow, that was a great game, but I was expecting more. And the I realize that the game is only half over.
A monologue begins, you don't realize it at first, then the buzzing starts, a cross between an angry behive and a buzzsaw, the screen begins to go red. The monologue becomes more forceful, more hurtful, the noises become overpowering as the monologue steadily rises in intensity. You feel the voice actor towering over you, belittling you.
After that vicious monologue key moments receive new context and you get pounded over and over again with emotional gut punches. Some moments are still sweet, but there is a lot of pain behind them. I have never broken down into tears playing a video game but I wept for half an hour after this was done.
This may have affected me a bit.
