On October 15, 1991, while on tour as a soloist with Kirov ballet in Washington DC, Alexandra defected from Soviet Union and relocated to the United States. Alexandra, a graduate of the prestigious Vaganova Academy and a driven successful ballerina with the Kirov Ballet, was determined to leave Russia in search for freedom in the West. She was only 20 when she made this decision, leaving her family behind. Her rigorous ballet training in Russia and her talent helped her to find a place in a leading American ballet company, where she became a principal dancer. In 2012, she founded Koltun Ballet Boston. Teaching ballet, she is shaping not only their bodies but also their characters. The precise and difficult curriculum, which consists of a full school load, plus daily ballet practice at the school, leaves no time for the kids to be kids. To make them tough Alexandra believes it is important to compete. The film will follow her as she leads a small group of her students to compete in a most prestigious competition, the Youth America Grand Prix.
