Workmanlike episode - US/UK jockey for position
bosporan25 March 2022
Routine spy activity with a 'we all know we are in conflict but are unable to say so' undercurrent to the US/UK relations. Some nice interpersonal chess going on to manipulate each other into making a mistake. The body count rises - this is all average spy thriller fare, though it does tee up the next episode.

Episode 4

The Ipcress File continues without dazzling.

Harry Palmer is on the trail for the missing scientist Dawson. The word Ipcress is used.

Only there is now a suspicion that the Americans might be behind the abduction. With Harry being set up as the patsy over a dead body.

Jean realises this but feels powerless to help.

There is more involvement with Dalby and a Russian spy from his past.

Some of the visuals were very good. Like the nuclear explosion in the Pacific Atoll.

I do think that the pace is suffering with the story being stretched out.

Slower paced, but still enjoyable.

Palmer and Jean are sent to the Pacific to witness the testing of a bomb, evidence suggests that The Americans may have been responsible for the recent attack.

I think this was my least favourite episode thus far, but I did still enjoy it. Pacing was more pedestrian, and in terms of content, not a whole lot happens here. There are still a few shoot 'em up scenes to enjoy, and the complex relationship that exists between Harry and Jean is further explored.

A good level of manipulation is inflicted on both the central characters, but for what reason?

I love the contrasting scenes between the two continents, one looks so inviting, the other so bleak and inhospitable.

One person that really is standing out for me is Ashley Thomas, Paul is such an interesting character, but he's smooth, charismatic, and has that velvety voice.

You can't trust anyone. 6/10.

Beer bottle

Did anybody drink from a beer bottle back then? Glasses for all drinks. In most countries this (horrible) practice was forbidden for hygiene reasons.

In english pub scenes beer is seen to be served in "beer mugs" which is historically correct. Unlike sucking on a bottle.

Lost

I'm sorry, was this an episode of 'The Ipcress File' or an advert for 'Fantastic Beasts 3'?

The amount of adverts for the latter inbetween parts of this rather filler episode were very annoying.

But this remains a moderate hit for ITV, and we all know how they love a moderate hit they can stick 4 star reviews from high brow newspapers on the adverts for.
