Working in a diamond anvil cell at extreme pressure and temperatures a team of scientists have produce a previously unknown allotrope of nitrogen. Employing x-ray crystallography the team determined it has the same crystal structure as black phosphorus. So it is often referred to black nitrogen even though is is transparent to visible light.—David Foss
