Holy gore hell. It's only March, and we already have at least two incredibly unique, extremely strange mind-fuck animated films that are definitely not for kids. Dash Shaw's Cryptozoo premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival in January, and The Spine of Night just premiered at the SXSW Film Festival this month. (And let's not forget about that wacky puppet horror Frank & Zed from the Nightstream Film Festival last year.) These films are yet another reminder that animation is a medium, not just a genre, and can be used to tell any kind of story - including extremely violent, gory, not-for-kids stories that could only be realized with animation. Fresh from SXSW, The Spine of Night is an instant cult classic, find-it-on-vhs-anywhere-you-can-at-whichever-video-store-stocks-it, extra gnarly, mind-melting sensation. Just don't watch this sober. Co-written & co-directed by Philip Gelatt & Morgan Galen King, The Spine of Night is an epic fantasy film ...

Surely no composer can be said to have exploded on the 2019 film scene more than Hildur Guðnadóttir: Emmy-winner for the miniseries “Chernobyl,” Golden Globe winner for “Joker” and now Oscar-nominated for that film, all in less than four months.
The cellist-composer is a breakthrough artist in multiple ways: First, she is a female film composer whose work has garnered global attention; second, she is very much a citizen of the world, born in Iceland, based in Germany, working in both Europe and the U.S.; and third, her “Joker” music reminds filmmakers of the value of enlisting a composer early, even at the script stage, still a rarity.
Asked about her meteoric rise, she is quick to remind us that she’s “been doing film music for almost 20 years, so it’s been a long time coming.” She released her first solo album in 2006, scored her first feature (“The Bleeding House...

Two researchers, alone in a barren wilderness, gather clues about a mysterious, invisible threat. As they advance toward answers, the threat advances toward them, and the march toward a murky showdown swells with dread. The premise could describe any number of sci-fi scenarios through the ages. “They Remain,” the new thriller from director Philip Gelatt (“The Bleeding House”) hews closely to some predictable beats, but it’s an engrossing exercise in boiling familiar ingredients down to pure, unbridled creepiness.
Based on the short story by Laird Barron, the movie unfolds in and around a pair of geodesic domes in the middle of nowhere, with a cast almost exclusively comprised of two people. Keith (William Jackson Harper) and Jessica (Rebecca Henderson) are a pair of scientists assigned to investigate the woods where a mysterious cult engaged in horrifying antics ages ago; in its wake, the pair have been tasked with studying...

Spotted those shiny boxed horror movies in your local Tesco? Craig's watched them. All of them.
There's a certain type of horror film fan who enjoys a challenge. Perhaps they like a sense of adventure with their films. Perhaps there's also an element of gambling. It starts small. Low odds. For example, they might buy a boxset of the Alien Quadrilogy. Four seemingly reasonable films but there's an element of both chance and endurance. Can you sit through nearly eight hours of Alien films? And, if you can, how many of them will you like? Eventually not only does the thrill become harder to chase as the product's effect gets weaker (anyone who's bought Hellraiser boxsets will know the rules of diminishing returns) but there are only a finite number of franchises in the world and the hardened need to find new, strange ways of getting their kicks.
So bear with me.

The Bleeding House is a mystery horror movie directed by Philip Gelatt, a director who hasn’t done anything else as far as research can tell, as a director. Gelatt also wrote the screenplay to the movie. The film, originally titled “The Bleeding” was released in the Us in 2011. I remember seeing the cover-art for this film a few months ago and it stood out, the white and red silhouette of a man holding a suitcase on a black background. It’s a great cover for a film that I otherwise knew nothing about.
The plot of the film is intriguing from the start. A family in a country home appear to be battling something from their past, attempting to start fresh. A stranger stops...

Title: Europa Report Director: Sebastian Cordero Starring: Sharlto Copley, Michael Nyqvist, Embeth Davidtz, Daniel Wu, Christian Camargo, Karolina Wydra, Anamaria Marinca A buzzy American premiere at this summer’s Los Angeles Film Festival, director Sebastian Cordero’s low-boil, sci-fi thriller “Europa Report” has racked up rapturous reviews (it presently stands just shy of 80 percent on Rotten Tomatoes) in large part because of the stark contrast in which it stands to most like-minded genre efforts. Undeniably, it is elegant, understated and wonderfully designed. Unfortunately, it’s also frustratingly hackneyed — a solidly cast, interesting budget concept absolutely wrecked by cross-cutting and needless voiceover. Penned by Philip Gelatt (“The Bleeding House”), the film centers [ Read More ]

Back in November last year, we saw a very intriguing first teaser trailer for The Europa Report, a sci-fi thriller movie led by District 9’s Sharlto Copley.
At the time, we weren’t sure exactly when to expect it to hit theatres. But with Magnet since setting the film’s release date for this summer, hitting VOD in June and theatres in August, the first full-length trailer has been released, and it has us even more intrigued.
A unique blend of documentary, alternative history and science fiction thriller, Europa Report follows a contemporary mission to Jupiter’s moon Europa to investigate the possible existence of alien life within our solar system. When unmanned probes suggest that a hidden ocean could exist underneath Europa’s icy surface and may contain single-celled life, Europa Ventures, a privately funded space exploration company, sends six of the best astronauts from around the world...

Having made a name for himself in District 9, Sharlto Copley has an excellent year ahead of him, with leading roles in Neill Blomkamp’s next film, Elysium, Spike Lee’s Oldboy remake, and the mysterious The Europa Report from director Sebastián Cordero.

Appearances are deceiving. When the Smiths try to rebuild their broken lives from a tragic past, a stranger comes calling in search of a place to rest. Living in a small town hasn’t been easy for the Smiths, especially due to their past, but they view this as a chance encounter to right some wrongs, and show their Christian spirit for helping this stranger. Both don’t get what they bargained for, as the film lives up to its title, The Bleeding House. Simple and straightforward, the effortlessly styled The Bleeding House doesn’t shake itself awake when it should, making for a rather dull time.
Philip Gelatt’s debut is a rather beautiful looking film, given its indie nature. Slick, dark cinematography contains the film’s mood, since its setting is mostly this large house, Gelatt frames the scenes to give it a larger look. With this,...

I always love hearing about great new sci-fi films in the works. Deadline reports on a new sci-fi project being sold at Tiff titled Europa, a "contemporary space adventure" developed by Wayfare Entertainment and Misher Films. Spanish director Sebastian Cordero is at the helm, and has a cast attached that includes District 9's Sharlto Copley, Michael Nyquist (Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), Anamaria Marinca (4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days) and "Asian superstar" Daniel Wu. Quite a unique cast. The project is fully funded and has a screenplay by Philip Gelatt (The Bleeding House). You've got to hear that this is about. Europa is the story of a six-person team of astronauts from various international space stations who are sent by a private sector corporation to be the first manned mission to Jupiter's fourth moon. Discovered in 1610 by Galileo, Europa is one of the big celestial bodies in our ...

Flannery O'Connor was never this grotesque but I do wonder what she would have thought of The Bleeding House. This independent grotesque mixes religion and blood in equal parts into a taut suspense thriller even as it neatly character studies victim and vile killer alike. Patrick Breen absolutely lights up the screen as Nick, a psychotic serial killer who may or may not have a conscience of some sort. The rest of the players here keep up just fine but it's Breen who lulls us into a trance with his lilting Southern accent and white linen suit. He's like some impossible Capote come to haunt us from Hell, wrongly inspired by the writing of his In Cold Blood. Faulkner comes to mind as well. The...

Tribeca: Tell us a little about The Bleeding House. Philip Gelatt: The Bleeding House is a dark thriller about a family suffering under the weight of some ambiguous past sin, their creepy daughter and the stranger who comes to visit them one night. Then things get bloody and uncomfortable... Tribeca: What inspired you to tell this story as your writing/directing debut? Philip Gelatt: I love genre movies and genre storytelling, and I knew my first effort had to be something very contained, and small. And when I put those things together in my head and started mulling them over, horror film ideas just started coming together. Lucky for me, I love horror films. The first thing I had in mind was the setting: an old house, in the middle of nowhere. Tribeca: Who or what (films) are some of your influences as a filmmaker? Philip Gelatt:...

One of the Tribeca Film Festival's smaller genre offerings that packed plenty of menace this year was Philip Gelatt's The Bleeding House - a title that you will understand once you see it. And no, it's not a chiller about a haunted abode where the walls run red. Gelatt's slow-simmer tale focuses on a family of four trying to forget about the past and move on. That's hard to do, however, when a tall stranger - embodied by Patrick Breen ( Cirque du Freak , Men in Black ) - comes a-callin' and he's out to sate his bloodlust. Shock spoke to Gelatt who is making his directorial feature debut with the film. Shock Till You Drop: What was your background prior to this? Were you dabbling in short films? Scanning through the trailers today and this one is straight up creepy. The Bleeding House is a story of the Smith family, famous in their Texas town for their strangeness and tucked away house. One day, a sweet talking preacher comes to their door step, claiming his car broke down. The family invites him in but soon realize that the preacher may have more in store for them than graciousness towards their hospitality.
The film is making a huge splash at Tribeca right now; critics and fans alike are crooning over the cast, majority of which are newcomers. Writer/Director Philip Gelatt is also receiving praise for his excellent use of tension and pacing which are paramount in any good thriller.

This year’s Tribeca will be running from Wednesday, April 20 to Sunday, May 1, so its close start date means that the lineup of movies are coming in fast. We’ve already gotten the World Narrative and World Documentary categories, and the next batch of movies have just been revealed.
Thanks to Deadline, we now have movies in the Spotlight, Cinemania, Special Screening and Sports categories. The list isn’t half bad; the one I’m looking forward to the most is The Guard, which got very strong reviews at Sundance earlier this year. All the categories seem to have solid picks, and I’d say this is shaping up to be a good year. Tfs will be there (including me!), so many of these movies will have reviews up on the site when the festival runs. Take a look at it below:

Well, congratulations New Yorkers, because you’ll get to see at least 2 films I saw at Sundance in January, when they screen at the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival, which just announced the second half of its festival lineup – the Spotlight, Cinemania, and Special Screening sections, most notably.
The films I’m referring to are Michael Rapaport’s Tribe Called Quest documentary, Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest, and The Guard, which Don Cheadle co-stars in, as an FBI agent (or is it CIA).
I’m still planning on going through the full list of entries to spotlight any titles worthy of this website, and I’ll do that in coming days/weeks… definitely before the festival begins next month – a festival I plan to attend, since it’s right in my backyard.
Worth noting is that Rapaport’s doc will be making its New York premiere, the...

Tribeca Film, the distribution enterprise formed last year to handle independent features of all genres, announced today that a few horror movies are among its recent acquisitions for its 2011 slate. Among them is Vincent D’Onofrio’s rock ’n’ roll horror musical Don’t Go In the Woods.
The directorial debut of Men In Black/The Cell actor D’Onofrio, Woods (see the Facebook page here) is about an aspiring rock band, their friends and lovers who head into a forest area to work on their songs, only to get decimated by a mysterious killer. It’ll be released theatrically and via video-on-demand and other platforms by Tribeca Film later this year, as will Philip Gelatt’s The Bleeding House (previously known as just The Bleeding), about a troubled family whose home is invaded by a sweet-talking, vengeance-seeking Texan killer, and Grave Encounters (official site here and trailer below), a...

Tribeca Enterprises announced today that it's beefing up the number of titles it will distribute per year. And, yes, some of those films will be of the horror variety. Up first, is Philip Gelatt's The Bleeding House , a home invasion thriller about a Texan killer who pays a visit to a family with a "haunted past." Vincent D'Onofrio's Don't Go in the Woods is also getting a release through Tribeca. This film earned a "0 out of 10" review here at Shock. And finally, there is Grave Encounters , which we first told you about during our American Film Market coverage last year. Directed and written by first time filmmakers the Vicious Brothers, this cinéma-vérité style supernatural thriller follows a ghost-hunting reality television show host and crew...
