Triple bill 1
There are three DePatie-Freleng Enterprises cartoons making up this first triple bill of 'The Pink Panther Show'. First is the eighteenth Pink Panther cartoon 'The Pink Blueprint'. Second is the fifteenth The Inspector cartoon 'Bomb Voyage'. Third and lastly is the eighth Pink Panther cartoon 'The Pink Tail Fly'. It is hard to not expect too much from any triple bill that contains cartoons from two of the best DePatie-Freleng Enterprises theatrical series (Ant and the Aardvark is up there too).
On the most part, 'The Pink Blueprint'/'Bomb Voyage'/'The Pink Tail Fly' is a very good triple bill, though it is mainly because 'The Pink Tail Fly' is wonderful and a personal favourite actually of the Pink Panther series. It is brought down a little by 'Bomb Voyage' being a disappointment, but the very good 'The Blue Blueprint' (apart from one major annoyance that affected quite a number of Pink Panther cartoons) is good enough to make the triple bill well worth seeing and strongly recommended by me.
1966's 'The Pink Blueprint' (8/10)- Aside from some predictability, the only major issue here is the pointless and annoying canned laughter track.
It's a very well animated and scored cartoon though (the theme tune is a classic), while Pink is typically cool and funny with a great foil. All the many gags work and are very funny, especially the ending, and the energy is breakneck.
1967's 'Bomb Voyage' (5/10)- This is compensated primarily by the animation, which is great. Simple but elegant. Also great are the music, with the theme tune a classic and it never got repetitive, and Pat Harrington's voice acting. Paul Frees certainly deserved his "one of the most sought after voice actors at the time" status. The Inspector and Deux Deux are hugely entertaining and compelling characters individually and together.
Unfortunately, the cartoon is just not very funny, with too few gags and those that are there are more tired and bland than witty or sharp. The cartoon lacks energy and has very little freshness or sharpness, while the supporting characters are flat. The premise already was old hat, and nothing new is done with it.
1965's 'The Pink Tail Fly' (10/10)- Cannot fault this and it is one of my personal favourites of the earlier Pink Panther cartoons. Up to this still very early point of the series too it was the best cartoon in the series since 'The Pink Phink'. Once again, beautifully animated and scored and while Pink is not as much of the outwitter here than usual he is still cool and funny.
Furthermore, the fly is hilarious and wonderfully cunning, some may say he is an annoyance but seeing as flies are annoying in real life that was appropriate. The chemistry between the two is great. The gags are both imaginative and hilarious, with the sound effects adding a lot. Regarding them the sound effects are some of the best of any Pink Panther cartoon and both characters are a lot of fun to watch. Lovely energy here too.
Summing up, very well done, while there is one disappointment one cartoon is very good and another is a classic. 8/10.
