Is it sad and more than a little creepy that all it takes to get my attention these days is an attractive girl with shards of metal protruding from her face? Please don’t answer that. Below you’ll find an excellent trailer for director Eduardo Chapero-Jackson’s upcoming Spanish thriller “Verbo”, a flick that’s produced by the good folks over at Filmax International. The poster positioned to the immediate left was recently unveiled at American Film Market, though it’s not nearly as effective as the clip embedded below. This is one to keep a very close eye on. Would you like to know more? Read this: Sara (Alba Garcia), a teenager who just does not understand the world in which she lives. Her search for meaning will lead her to a secret place where she will embark on a great adventure towards life, or death.” When you’re ready to proceed,...

Sara is a very pretty, but very lost and confused teenager. As with many of her age, she has trouble relating to her parents; her mother tries and fails to talk to Sara, and Sara's father is increasingly absent. Sara is not doing well in school, and has become obsessed with graffiti art by a Banksy-type unknown. She feels much like Don Quixote, able to see the dangers that no one else notices. Confused and feeling very alone, Sara takes her own life. But she finds herself in a strange, dark world whose in habitants take her under their wing and will try to convince her that life is, indeed, worth living. Thus begins Eduardo Chapero-Jackson's feature film debut, Verbo. It is a visually stunning...

Announced on Tuesday, the Toronto Int. Film Festival has padded another four Spanish produced or co-produced titles to their 2010 edition. In the Contemporary World Cinema section, we have the International Premiere for Achero Mañas's Anything You Want aka Todo Lo Que Quieras. Mañas, a former actor, returns to fiction after directing the documentary “Blackwhite” in 2004, his latest film tells the story of how a lawyer (Juan Diego Botto from The Dancer Upstairs) undergoes an identity metamorphosis in order to please and secure the emotional stability of his daughter - this after the sudden death of her mother. In a recent interview for film magazine Fotogramas the director declared: "I talk about ambiguity. Of a change in the role of man that puts him in the most ambiguous and insecure place…" and "the change of the man in modern society, which I think is one of the most radical changes of the last years.

Whoa... We won't be running an Indie Trailer Sunday next week (because it's Comic-Con!) so I thought I'd feature something very special, and totally trippy, for your viewing pleasure today (courtesy of Twitch). The film is called Verbo and it is the feature directorial debut of acclaimed Madrid-born filmmaker Eduardo Chapero-Jackson. It's a "dark fantasy thriller" about a teenage girl who "doesn't understand the world in which she lives." It's kind of hard to describe, but boy is this trailer a trip to watch. Even after watching it, I still don't know what heck is going on, but I think it looks very unique and I'm interested in checking it out. Though he is little known on these shores and is only making his feature debut now, director Eduardo Chapero-Jackson has long been considered one of the brightest lights in Spanish film. Chapero-Jackson's short films have been so successful that they have received theatrical releases and Verbo - his feature debut - is one of Spain's most anticipated of the year. Need a further endorsement? It is backed by the producers of Pan's Labyrinth and The Orphanage, producers with a remarkable run of high quality films. Here's the official synopsis:
Sara is a teenager who doesn't understand the world in which she lives. Only Liriko, a mysterious character who leaves enigmatic messages across the city, seems to understand her. Her search for meaning will lead her to a secret world, where she will embark on a great adventure in which life and death are at stake. If she succeeds, Sara could...

The Apaches Entertainment and Filmax co-production Verbo has a teaser trailer and the film is looking very interesting, regardless of director Eduardo Chapero-Jackson's fascination with light sticks. The preview plays it up big with an epic-sounding score and cool visual effects. The story follows Sara, a teenager who doesn't understand the world in which she lives. Only Liriko, a mysterious character who projects enigmatic messages across the city, seems to understand her. Her search for meaning in this often depressing world will lead her to a secret place, where she will embark on a great adventure towards life, or death. If she succeeds, Sara could finally be able to leave her mark on the world. Verbo opens in Spain later this year.

Having really dug [rec] 2 I'm eagerly looking forward to the two planned sequels which were just reported on today. Directors Paco Plaza and Jaume Balaguero will split directing duties on each film. I hope that doesn't break the formula. The two co-wrote the third film, [Rec] Genesis, which is slated for Fall 2011 and has to do with the origins of the virus which only seems logical considering how #2 went. The fourth is slated for Fall 2012.

Verbo, a reportedly fantasy/horror about a girl on a journey is supposed to be in post, and the first sales art appeared today which you can see to the right. Verbo is directed by Eduardo Chapero-Jackson and is supposedly based on one of his short films, although I'm having trouble verifying this with translation. Even better though, it's...

With American horror flipping around like a fish out of water and gasping for air lately, it's good that someone somewhere is getting things right. Sadly original horror films aren't exactly in abundance here anymore. Thank god for the option to import!
