Dawning Thanks to the fine folks over at Breaking Glass Pictures, we here at Big Daddy Horror Reviews are excited to announce that we will be holding a DVD giveaway contest of "Dawning" from director Gregg Holtgrewe. Dawning is a true original in an era of lifeless horror remakes. Dawning captures that raw intensity of people being trapped in a corner with no way of escaping that turned John Carpenter's Assault on Precinct 13 into a cult classic. And it gives viewers something to debate about, to ponder over like The Blair Witch Project did. Dawning won rave reviews from almost the entire horror film community with bloggers and critics alike buzzing about the film's fresh new take on the supernatural, its balance of insightful characters and its eerie, claustrophobic atmosphere. Two lucky winners will find themselves the winner of a brand spanking new DVD copy of Dawning valued at $27.98 each.

Gregg Holtgrewe Saw, Black Christmas, The Evil Dead, 28 Days Later and Coma, what do all of these films have to do with Dawning? What do they have in common? What connects them? These are high concept, original and unique horror film premises. These horror films in particular asked viewers to look into the terror that ordinary people are capable of when put in a difficult situations and seeing what these people, that you can relate to, do in these situations. Gregg Holtgrewe is the director behind Dawning. With Dawning, Gregg Holtgrew pulled off something so rare - the slow burn. He created this atmosphere that starts out with general unease about it and things escalate into something terrifying and unbearable at times as the terror becomes all the more palpable. We took out the time to speak to Gregg Holtgrewe about Dawning and his thought process. Here's what he had to say.

Family staying at a cabin in the middle of nowhere trying to heal some old wounds are held hostage by a man claiming an unseen supernatural entity is after him.
What if your thoughts were exposed to everyone around you? What kind of environment would that create around you? What kinds of horrors would unfold as a result of everyone knowing what you were thinking? Dawning explores this interesting notion with one of the more original horror film premises of the past few years. Dawning is a little slow to start, because the introductory scenes which establish the characters are a little bit stilted and awkward as it takes some time for the cast to get into the flow of things. However, Dawning picks up the pace when it focuses in on the scary stuff.

This latest installment of Soundtrack Round Up kicks off with White Lion, a film about a poor little lion cub called Letsatsi who is outcast from his family and forced to undergo trials and tribulations before he may take his rightful place as leader of his pride as an adult. Sound familiar? White Lion (as far as I can tell from the soundtrack’s cover art) implements live action lions, however, so it might actually be quite interesting to watch. The film’s score is by Philip Miller and is similarly derivative, though not in an unpleasant way – ‘Chicken Hok and the Porcupine’ is rather fun. The soundtrack as well as the plot evokes memories of a certain Disney film, though perhaps that is symptomatic of any music that includes African chants and vocalisations over light orchestrations. Seventh track ‘Mother’ is weirdly reminiscent of the lullaby from Ocarina of Time.

I went in watching Vicious Circle Films’ Dawning DVD not really knowing what kind of psycho-thriller it was. One thing, this movie isn’t for everyone because some people will expect more but story wise it’s a great watch and leaves you with questions.
Ok, a brother and sister (Aurora and Chris) meet their parents at a cabin in the woods in the middle of nowheresville. From the beginning the dad seems like something is going on with him but nothing is really ever answered there. Something happens to Aurora’s dog that sets things in motion. A stranger shows up and there is some really silly gun swapping that happen there, kind of silly and this part of the movie goes by really slow.
So poor Aurora seems to be the innocent one here as things just keep happening and no questions are answered which is the part I like.

Breaking Glass Pictures.

Director: Jon D. Wagner.
Writers: Eric Fischer and Brianna Lee Johnson.
The latest indie flick to come out of distribution house Breaking Glass Pictures is The Anniversary at Shallow Creek. This title releases on DVD July 5th and coincidently, this is a day that you will want to stay away from digital rental shops and Netflix queues. Bathed in horror cliches, The Anniversary at Shallow Creek is a B-movie that does not break any molds. Also, the film does not show any depth in story or characters and watching this film is much like being in detention or in a prison cell; you just do not want to be there.
The sound is on cue, but the camera used for photography seems overly bright for exterior shots and the picture is dull for interior sequences. The...

There's no shortage of "Family in Peril" or "Something in the Woods" movies out there, but even a cynical horror fan like myself has to admit it seems like there is something more there with Gregg Holtgrewe’s Dawning.
Holtgrewe's story of a family fighting for survival against an unseen force on the outside and an intruder inside was a finalist at the 2009 Shriekfest Film Festival as well as making its way onto five annual top ten lists — and took home awards including the Silver Ace Award at the Las Vegas Film Festival, Best Picture at the Rhode Island International Film Festival, and both Best Screenplay and Audience Award at the Solstice Film Festival.
June 28th it's heading home to you via Vicious Circle Films. You'll be able to order it directly from the company at BreakingGlassPictures.com. While you are waiting for the actual release, you can check out all their other offerings,...

In the film stem cell research leads to an uncontrollable monster who turns against his masters. The film festival has also announced the attachment of Alex Lugones' The Devil's Toy, Gregg Holtgrewe's Dawning, with an early, unannounced word that Marion Kerr's Golden Earrings might also be in attendance. Have a look at what this specialized film festival has to offer horror fans in a clip for The Prometheus Project below.
The synopsis for The Prometheus Project here:
