Annie Clark displays a remarkable facility for change, creating constantly morphing songs contained within a shifting panoply of modes, voices, and styles, cutting delicate, glittering pop with forceful fuzz and raunchy, preening guitar work. A multi-instrumentalist with a history of institutional training and anonymous backing-band work, she retains the guitar as her signature instrument and most potent tool, lacerating otherwise divine music with down-and-dirty grit, eyes heavenward and feet muddy.
The gradual expansion of sounds and textures occurring across her seven solo albums as St. Vincent has been accompanied by an inverse sense of simplification, the fine-tuning of music that’s grown less theatrical and more precise, imagery and language filed down to a sharp point. To celebrate the release of her latest release, All Born Screaming, we’ve ranked all eight of the musician’s albums, including her one-off collaboration with David Byrne.

The seventh album that singer-songwriter-multi-instrumentalist Annie Clark has released as St. Vincent teems with the kind of visceral imagery that sticks with you long after her songs fade out. There’s a “hungry little flea” ready to infect your “warm body,” a predator on the street turning aggression into an evil blues promise, a sink that runs red, a head that won’t stop banging, a dream that ends in hell. “I feel like graffiti on a urinal,” she sings. Hey, we’ve all been there.
Clark’s music has always been fearlessly intimate.

St. Vincent rolled out “Big Time Nothing” ahead of the release of her first self-produced record and seventh album, All Born Screaming, due Friday.
“Don’t blink/Don’t wait/Don’t walk/You’re late/Don’t fall from grace, behave/ Don’t trip, sashay,” St. Vincent sings against a fever-dream beat, before declaring, “I look inside your eyes” and counting down to the next verse. “Don’t show/Don’t flake/Go hard, debase/Don’t make a dishonest mistake/Don’t be so sure I need a cure.

Steven Spielberg is one of the most influential and celebrated directors of all time. He helped define the blockbuster, established the look and feel of '80s genre fare, and gave us the best (and possibly only well-shot) big-budget studio musical of the last decade. But despite getting his start in science fiction, Spielberg has mostly distanced himself from the genre in the past decade or so.
Still, Spielberg has remained an ardent fan of the genre, praising recent gems such as "Godzilla Minus One" and proclaiming his fandom for Denis Villeneuve's "Dune: Part Two." Perhaps this has rekindled a passion for sci-fi in 77-year-old Spielberg, seeing as he's now getting ready to return to one of his favorite subjects — aliens.
According to Variety, Spielberg is likely going to "make his next project a UFO film based on his own original idea." David Koepp is writing the screenplay, according to the outlet's sources.

St. Vincent has opened up about her follow-up to 2021’s Daddy’s Home, and it sure sounds interesting. In a new interview with Mojo magazine, the artist born Annie Clark said her new album is “darker and harder” than her most recent project and described its sound as “urgent and psychotic.”
Clark self-produced the album and recorded it at her own Compound Fracture studio in LA, New York’s Electric Lady, and Steve Albini’s Electrical Audio in Chicago. “I needed to go deeper in finding my own sonic vocabulary,” she said about the experience. “I like to think of [the record] as post-plague pop, it’s a lot about heaven and hell — the metaphorical kinds. Which is appropriate, because sitting alone in a studio for that many hours I would say is a version of hell.”
She added that the album is filled with “lots of guitars” alongside ’70s and ’80s analog synths.

In her song, “At the Holiday Party,” St. Vincent describes a convivial scene in which everyone celebrating loosens up, maybe takes a few pills, and lets down their guard. It’s about enjoying a safe space and being yourself, and she brought that same vibe to Jack and Rachel Antonoff’s ninth annual Ally Coalition Talent Show on Tuesday. Video from the event shows her performing that track, off her 2021 album, Daddy’s Home, with some of the night’s other performers, including Jack Antonoff on piano and Bartees Strange on guitar.

Thrusting a cold, hard badass into a domestic setting is a tried-and-true set-up for a mediocre family comedy. Big muscular tough guys like Vin Diesel (playing a Navy-Seal-turned-babysitter in 2005’s “The Pacifier”), Dave Bautista (as a CIA agent looking after a nine-year-old girl in 2020’s “My Spy”), and Dwayne Johnson (as an NFL-player-turned-sudden-father in 2007’s “The Game Plan”) have all starred in movies that follow this dusty formula to a tee.
And every one of these films flounders largely because they rest on a single joke (isn’t it funny that someone so masculine is looking after kids) that isn’t actually all that funny.
To its slight credit, Apple TV+’s new film “The Family Plan” downplays that type of humor significantly; its sole sort of original idea is that its wayward badass Dan didn’t have his domestic life thrust upon him; he actively loves being a dad,...

If you plan to attend Usher's "My Way" Las Vegas residency, you'll want to arrive early because you don't want to miss the preshow dance party courtesy of his unmatched fans. As I walked into the Park MGM arena for the show I was attending in late June, my ears were greeted with classic R&b and hip-hop songs like Tevin Campbell's "Can We Talk" and Miguel's "Adorn You" as a DJ encouraged us to stand, dance, and sing along with the rest of the audience. Usher's dancers even came out and interacted with the audience, inviting some lucky attendees to dance with them on stage. The vibes felt more like a house party with all of my best friends than a concert surrounded by strangers. So much so that I didn't even realize the show was starting.

Renowned reggae crooner Junior English died aged 71 last week, prompting an outpouring of grief from fans, friends and family members far and wide – particularly among Britain’s Black Caribbean communities.
Widely regarded as the first “king of lovers’ rock” in the UK, English released more than 13 studio albums across a six-decade career, working with popular reggae producers and labels including Clement Bushay, the Pama brothers at Jet Star Records, Count Shelly, and Trojan Records.
With the capacity to bowl listeners over with his deep baritone, and thrill them with a striking falsetto, the London-based singer rose to become one of the most sought-after reggae artists of his generation.
Born in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1951, English was the youngest of three children. He began to perform as a pre-teen and recorded two songs, “Fay is Gone” and “My Queen” (a duet with Errol Dunkley) for producer Prince Buster in the 1960s.

The directing duo known as Daniels (Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert) are two of the most exciting voices working in cinema today. After getting their start directing evocative music videos like "Turn Down For What" by DJ Snake and Lil Jon, the two have evolved their incomparable styles into some of the most compelling feature films in years.
Their first, "Swiss Army Man," was promoted as "the Daniel Radcliffe farting corpse movie," but turned out to be one of the most moving examinations of humanity and why life is worth living even when things feel absolutely hopeless. Their latest, the stunning "Everything Everywhere All At Once," is already a front-runner for Oscar contention, even with scenes including hotdog fingers and a martial arts fight scene with visible buttplug flares. It seems as if there's nothing too weird or too out of left field for Daniels, which is probably why funnyman...

Like a too-generous parent on Christmas morning, “Spirited” keeps doling out the shiny presents long after the recipients are sated. But if there’s a genre that begs to be maximalist, it’s a musical comedy with its roots in Charles Dickens; it’s not so much whether or not you like what “Spirited” has to offer but how much of it you can take in one sitting.
The whole “one sitting” concept may be an outdated one, since this is a film that’s going to live its life (and its Christmases Yet to Come) on Apple TV+, where there’s always a pause button. But viewers who can see “Spirited” projected on the big screen absolutely should, if only to fully appreciate the splashy (sometimes in a literal sense) choreography from Chloe Arnold, one of the film’s true MVPs.

At this point it is almost impossible to count the number of remakes, ripoffs, variations, takeoffs and general thievery on the part of filmmakers riffing on Charles Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol. The latest imitation, Spirited, isn’t even the only new version to debut this season; I can count at least two others still waiting for liftoff as the yuletide tidings continue in 2022. But this one has some real firepower in terms of who is involved with the Apple TV+ original film, chief among them stars Ryan Reynolds and Will Ferrell, who deliver a take most closely aligned with Bill Murray’s modern 1988 Scrooged, a homage even noted in the rat-a-tat snarky script here by John Morris and Sean Anders (Daddy’s Home), the latter who also directed.

Though the sappy message in “Spirited” preaches that people can change, this spiffy musical comedy sure feels like an homage to tried-and-true Hollywood classics. , like a loud sweater or syrupy fireside cocoa. Proudly wearing its adaptation status on its sleeve, “Spirited” turns Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” into a contemporary feel-good comedy — with flashy musical numbers to boot.
Reprising some of the shenanigans of his lovable “Elf” character, reliable funnyman Will Ferrell plays a jovial ghost of Christmas present opposite a dastardly Ryan Reynolds as a modern day Scrooge. Bolstered by a stellar ensemble, both Ferrell and Reynolds make surprisingly charming showmen, impressing with confident crooning — and even some light choreo. It’s refreshing to see two stars who could have easily phoned it in for the rest of their careers push themselves to try new things.
Even more thrilling, they really can sing!

Will Ferrell’s signature comedy style is halfway between obnoxious and endearing, a naïve man-child whose excitable energy is matched by his fearless disregard for dignity. Anyone who’s been missing that persona should find something to enjoy in Spirited, Ferrell’s bid to headline another holiday perennial to sit alongside Elf. His delivery remains inspired and his chemistry with Ryan Reynolds, playing the smarmy Scrooge figure in this busy 21st-century riff on A Christmas Carol, has lots of fizz, even if a supposed romance with Octavia Spencer’s character doesn’t. But is the movie any good?
That will depend on how closely you identify with the delicious disdain of Patrick Page as the chain-rattling Jacob Marley, upholder of the Dickensian tradition, who rolls his eyes and begs for a reprieve almost every time someone bursts into song. Because, yes, it’s a musical.

The Ghost of Christmas Present is putting a modern twist on a beloved tale of holidays past.
Apple Original film “Spirited” stars Will Ferrell as the Ghost of Christmas Present who selects grumpy corporate executive Clint Briggs (Ryan Reynolds) as his newest project. However, Clint soon flips the script on the Christmas spirit and instead visits the spirit’s past, present, and future.
Inspired by Charles Dickens’ classic “A Christmas Carol,” the musical film also stars Octavia Spencer, Sunita Mani, Patrick Page, Joe Tippett, Marlow Barkley, and Jen Tullock. “Daddy’s Home” helmer Sean Anders directs from a script he co-wrote the script John Morris.
“Spirited” features original songs penned by “Dear Evan Hansen” and “La La Land” Oscar and Tony Award winners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.

Today we have a new trailer for the upcoming Apple Original Film "Spirited" starring Will Ferrell, Ryan Reynolds, and Octavia Spencer. The Grammy for Best Alternative Album has been awarded to some of the most critically acclaimed albums of the past couple of decades. Winners like Radiohead’s “In Rainbows,” Bon Iver’s “Bon Iver,” David Bowie’s “Blackstar,” and most recently Fiona Apple’s “Fetch the Bolt Cutters” remain classics for music lovers. This year the race is one of the tightest ever, with a group of contenders including past Grammy nominees and exciting new bets. But all five were showered with praised by music journalists. Let’s take a look at each nominee.
Fleet Foxes’ “Shore” starts the list. This album came out at the start of the eligibility season, so it’s safe to say it carries some passion to have edged out more recent contenders for the nomination. It’s going to be a really rich Christmas for exhibition, Sony and Marvel as Spider-Man: No Way Home barrels toward potentially the third-best second weekend ever with around $143M over the long Christmas period of Dec. 24-27.
Already, through four days, the Jon Watts MCU title counts $297.2M in the U.S. and Canada, 3% ahead of December 2015’s Star Wars: Force Awakens over the same frame.
But what does this spell for other major studios with big event movies? While it’s a question always asked during pre-pandemic Christmas periods whenever a single franchise movie sucks up the oxygen, it’s a more dire situation during a time when many wonder if Omicron will truly take its toll at the year-end domestic box office. Will Spider-Man: No Way Home be the only draw on the marquee, a repeat of Christmas 2015 when Star Wars: Force Awakens ruled and only one...
