It was announced in August 2023 that Disney Plus canceled the upcoming TV shows even though it has already been filmed as part of Disney's cost-reduction strategy, which involves cutting $3 billion in non-sports content.
NEW YORK, NY, October 30, 2023 - AMC Networks announced today that it has licensed the U.S. and Canadian linear and streaming rights to Nautilus, a 10-episode live-action series inspired by Jules Verne's beloved Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, from Disney Entertainment. The series will air on AMC and AMC+ as a special television event in 2024. Nautilus tells the origin story of the iconic Captain Nemo: an Indian Prince robbed of his birthright and family, a prisoner of the East India Mercantile Company and a man bent on revenge against the forces that have taken everything from him.
A reimagining of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954) which was initially set to be a remake with David Fincher set to direct and Brad Pitt set to star in it. It was in pre-production since 2010 but was continually pushed out. In 2013, Pitt announced that he would not be a part of the production.
This show was initially set to be a movie and was to be filmed in Queensland, Australia. Since production got canceled, production on Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017) began in its place and took advantage of all the tax break incentives offered by the government to film there.
