The Children of Rain - Red Corduroy (Bad Pressings)
This is a tale with two beginnings that merge revealingly. One is more than half a century old, the other only began at the start of the year. They meld on the account of a single name, or rather the mis-accounting of it, and the fact that it seemed beguiling to this writer on a late at night, nothing better to do trawl for "quality obscure" on auction sites. You are unlikely to have heard of The Children Of Rain. They released one single on Dot Records in 1966, but someone at the label sent the wrong credits to the pressing plant. Although they were the first to get their hands on "Get Together," their rendition tanked, not because it was in any way inferior to the later version by The Youngbloods which became a counter-culture anthem for that turbulent decade of hope and change,...

Just one day after Carrie Fisher died at age 60, her mother Debbie Reynolds was rushed to the hospital and died following a report of a possible stroke.
The heartbreak of losing her daughter may have exacerbated the 84-year-old’s existing health issues. The Singin’ in the Rain star’s son Todd Fisher told reporters that Reynolds had said just hours earlier, “I miss her so much, I want to be with Carrie.”
There have been numerous reports of spouses who have spent decades together dying just days – or even hours – after their partners. On December 9, Trent Winstead, 88, of Tennessee, died only hours after learning Dolores,...

Dear Danny,Ah, puzzle films. Many of my most deeply moving cinematic memories—think of Resnais or Ruiz or Wong—have come from such works, where the intricacy and even obscurity of storytelling jostles and fuses with the frankness of emotions. La La Land has little use for puzzles, unless they’re part of the technical complications that go into the choreography of its slam-bang musical numbers. (Why have the introductory highway hoedown just unfold in one take, when you can also include Matrix-style camera swivels to capture bicycle pirouettes in mid-air?) No, Damien Chazelle’s goal in his follow-up to Whiplash is a boldly direct one: to flood the screen with charm, to bring down the house with joy. Walking into my screening after having had my fair share of dour and difficult festival entries, I could scarcely think of a nobler aim for cinema. Less than twenty minutes later,...

On paper, tonight’s Season 9 finale of The Voice is a four horse race — but the week’s iTunes rankings tell a tale of two ponies pulling away from the pack, and the photo-finish cameras bracing for a head-bob at the finish line.

D'Angelo, Phish and the Beach Boys create unforgettable weekend.

Manchester, Tennessee — The 11th annual Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival rocked fans with Radiohead, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Phish and about 150 other artists — including indie rock, hip-hop, jazz, bluegrass, African, folk, reggae, electronic and metal — over the course of four sleepless days and nights, Thursday to Sunday.
When Phish closed out the weekend Sunday night, wrapping up 15 minutes before their scheduled midnight end time — very uncharacteristic for Phish or for Bonnaroo — even diehard Phish heads, rain dripping down their faces, seemed relieved that they could finally turn off the adrenaline that kept them going for 96 hours.
If you were there, you get it. If not, well, where the heck were you?
If the festival's many accolades — named as one of Rolling Stone magazine's "50 Moments That Changed Rock & Roll," "Festival of...

Ben Gazzara died on February 3 of pancreatic cancer. An alumnus of the famed Actors’ Studio, he had a long career on stage, TV, and film. Not just long, but accomplished.
On Broadway, he was the original Brick in the Tennessee Williams’ classic, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, and then he eclipsed that triumph with another powerful stage performance as a junkie whose habit poisons his relationship with everyone who loves him in A Hat Full of Rain.
His TV career launched in the early 1950s and extended through the next five decades. His small screen credits included roles on the landmark live drama anthologies of the 50s, such as The United States Steel Hour, Kraft Theatre, and Playhouse 90, and such acclaimed productions as cop drama A Question of Honor (1982), one of network TV’s first attempts to address the then detonating AIDS epidemic in An Early Frost (1985), and the epic mini-series,...

The Factory
Opens: 2011
Cast: John Cusack, Jennifer Carpenter, Ksenia Solo, Mae Whitman, Sonya Walger
Director: Morgan O'Neill
Summary: An obsessed cop is on the trail of a serial killer prowling the streets of Buffalo, New York. When his teenage daughter disappears, he drops any pretension and professional restraint he might have to get the killer.
Analysis: Shot almost three years ago now, Dark Castle had originally planned to release this thriller back in late 2009. However for reasons unspecified, it has been sitting on a shelf for some time and keeps getting delayed. In cases like these, the most obvious reason is usually the correct one - it stinks (eg. "Case 39"). The company certainly has had its fair share of box-office duds lately including "Whiteout," "Ninja Assassin," "The Losers," "Orphan" and "Splice".
Yet Cusack generally has good taste in projects, his last venture into horror was the surprisingly effective Stephen King...

It's MTV's World Cup of Rock! The World Cup is the greatest sporting event on the planet, a super-sized stage where legends are born with every strike of the ball, where infamy is just a moment away and where the dreams of millions live or die by the minute. That's why, in the spirit of the 2010 MTV Musical March Madness competition, we've created "The World Cup (Of Rock)," a FIFA-style tournament that takes 16 of the biggest nations — rock-wise (sorry Algeria) — and pits them against one another to determine just which is the most rockingly awesome. Heavyweights like the U.S.A., England, France and Germany are all here, but so are a handful of surprisingly strong sleeper countries. As the Cup progresses, we'll be unveiling the match-ups, and it's up to you to vote your favorites through. In the end, only one nation will be left standing: the world champion of rock.

Starting yesterday, Frank Sinatra made a grand return to New York City. Well, his undeniable influence truly never really left the city, but the stage musical by famed choreographer Twyla Tharp (Movin' Out) that uses all of his songs opened at Broadway's Marquis Theatre to much fanfare. And strong reviews! Including mine, where I gave it an A– and said that the dance-infused show was "escapism at its best" and, overall, "a delicious love note to Ol' Blue Eyes." If you like dance and Sinatra -- and who doesn't? -- this is the show for you. Also opening this week were two plays.
