On Thursday, SAG-aftra released a statement with the Joint Policy Committee on Broadcast Television (Jpc) about the approval of a special waiver for digital commercials with budgets of $50,000 or less. This new agreement allows union actors to work on lower-budget commercial productions in the bustling field of digital new media. And while these smaller commercials must still abide by the SAG-aftra’s Commercial Contract and the Internet or New Media provisions, perhaps it’s a sign of the times that the usually-unwavering union is responding flexibly to the expanding opportunities that digital entertainment offers to American actors. “After listening to the concerns of our signatories and with the Jpc’s member needs in mind, both organizations have decided to offer a waiver for commercial digital low budget productions,” says a joint statement from the two organizations. “While a waiver of this scope is rare, the union and the Jpc felt...

Burns, 44, who founded Rooster Teeth before YouTube existed back in 2003, discussed the importance of honing a diversified business with varied revenue streams -- especially in light of the YouTube 'Adpocalypse', in which many creators have seen their ad revenues plummet. Burns said that, in building Rooster Teeth, he never let any one tier of the business comprise more than 30% of the company's total earnings.

On March 13, the Writers Guild of America will begin negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers for a new three-year contract, and some early reports indicate the union is prepared to strike if its demands are not met.
It would be the first WGA strike in nearly a decade; the last one was the 100-day walkout that crippled the 2007-08 television season — a period of calamity that forced major networks to reduce their episode orders, prompted some late-night shows to air without a writing staff, and fueled the rise of reality TV.
WGA declined to comment on its negotiations, but veteran entertainment lawyer Mark Litwak cautions that things are still in the “posturing” stage until negotiations actually begin. “WGA is saying, ‘We’re gonna strike if we don’t get what we want,'” Litwak says.
Strike or not, the television industry has changed dramatically in the past 10 years.

The Writers Guild Awards and the Academy writing nominees always don’t line up; many films are ineligible. This year, those included Oscar-writing nominees “Lion” and “The Lobster.”
This year, the WGA and the Academy differed dramatically. While the WGA deemed “Moonlight” and “Loving” as Original Screenplays, the Academy considered both as Adapted; only “Moonlight” landed a nomination.
At the WGA, as at the BAFTAs, Barry Jenkins’ script for “Moonlight” competed for the Original Screenplay Award against both Kenneth Lonergan’s “Manchester by the Sea” and Damien Chazelle’s “La La Land.” Unlike the BAFTAs, Jenkins emerged the winner over Lonergan, a sign of strength for “Moonlight,” which is nominated for eight Oscars.

The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) kicks off its 16th annual Doc Fortnight on Thursday, a 10-day festival that includes 20 feature-length non-fiction films and 10 documentary shorts. This year’s lineup includes four world premieres and a number of North American and U.S. premieres.

The festival is far from the only major North American showcase for non-fiction cinema. Festivals ranging from Hot Docs to True/False have played key roles in the expanding documentary festival circuit. However, Doc Fortnight has maintained its own niche on the scene, by aiming to expose undiscovered stories and filmmakers, screening a range of documentaries from around the world and capturing the ways in which artists are pushing the boundaries of non-fiction filmmaking.

When MGM undertook to produce a film adaptation of the book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in 1938 they wanted to use all the newest technological tools — think Technicolor — and special effects wizardry that they possibly could to bring the fantastic story to life. Equally, when the Builders Association decided to make the film the subject of their latest play last year — Elements of Oz ran Off-Broadway throughout December — they did the exact same thing. But for an innovative theater company in 2016 that meant integrating live video production, online clips, and a multitasking phone app into the onstage proceedings. New media […]...

What ex-Sony Entertainment CEO Michael Lynton’s transition to Snapchat could mean for movies and new media.
Snap Inc., the technology and social media company whose products include Snapchat and Spectacles, is welcoming a Hollywood executive into its ranks. Last week, Michael Lynton announced that he would be stepping down from his position as CEO of Sony Entertainment, the film, television and music conglomerate, for a new post as board chairman for Snap Inc. Lynton is the last of the old Sony guard to depart since the infamous Sony hack which produced an email leak scandal that led to the ousting of former studio chief Amy Pascal. (Pascal is now a producer on Spider-Man: Homecoming and Barbie.)
Rumors abound regarding what will happen next at Sony Pictures, whose string of major flops including Passengers and Ghostbusters led to the studio’s 5th-place finish in 2016 studio market share, just a notch above Paramount Pictures. Lynton...

Manuel here bringing you the latest guild awards courtesy of the writers in the industry. As with SAG and DGA, what the writers enjoy and choose worthy of a nomination helps those of us intent on predicting the Oscars see what might be in the running not only for the screenplay categories but also what films are gaining steam enough to see the across-the-board support that nets them a Best Picture citation.
A few caveats, though. Given the Writer's Guild rules, there are a number of high profile screenplays that weren't even in the running for their award and thus their absence should in no way be taken as a slight on their quality or a notch against their potential come Oscar nomination time. As usual, animated fare and foreign language (and foreign-produced) films are the ones least likely to show up here given the eligibility requirements—one must be...

The inaugural edition of Storytek took place on Saturday November 19 at Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, with international experts discussing the continued integration of technology and alternative storytelling.
The all day-event included five panels focusing on intellectual property (IP), start-up and IP investment, gaming, Vr and Ar and the understanding of multi-platform audiences.
Getting a grip on IP and alternative storytelling
The day kicked off with a conversation focused on IP, and the vast topic of alternative storytelling.
John Heinsen, CEO of Los Angeles-based transmedia company Bunnygraph Entertainment, used Game of Thrones as an example of a multi-faceted IP that has grown from an internationally-viewed television series into a business involving a behind-the-scenes live aftershow series, collector’s edition box-sets, IMAX special screenings, video games, podcasts, books, clothing and collectibles.
“We have to think about new business models,” said Heinsen, referring to increased production content like mobile behind-the-scenes video blogs or apps teasing upcoming episodes.
