An interesting episode with flaws
This episode was definitely an intriguing one to watch. I'll start with everything that I really liked about this episode. Firstly, everything looked and sounded fantastic from a artistic perspective. The voice actors were on point as always, the backgrounds and characters were extremely well designed(especially stolas' father), and "stolas sings" has quickly become one of my favorite songs from the whole series. Now I personally really enjoyed seeing young stolas and young blitzo's personal lives before they had met. I liked meeting the fathers of both of them and seeing what the two were like as kids. The single best part of the flashbacks was 100% blitzo's relationship with Fizz. I think the idea that the two used to essentially be brothers gives their interactions in season 1 a whole new meaning and gives the show a huge opportunity to explore their relationship further in future episodes. Moving on to the adult side of the episode I obviously loved "stolas sings", and I also thought the "sex scene" between stolas and blitzo was quite entertaining and a good retread of what we'd already seen. There were a lot of things to like about this episode for sure and I can see why people like it so much, however there are a few flaws that very much bring down the experience for me. Firstly, and least importantly, the episode is just not very funny. This was not super important to me since this episode was obviously not going for a comedic tone, however I do feel that a few more jokes here and there could have supplemented the sad sometimes dull tone of the episode. Now for the two things that really bring down this episode for me. First is Stella. This episode has basically single hand-idly ruined her character. In previous episodes, Stella was always seen as something of an antagonist to our main characters, however, there was also a sense that she was justified in opposing them, since her husband cheated on her with a random stranger. Stella was never a good person , but she was always three dimensional. She was someone who would go to extreme lengths to get revenge on someone who had betrayed her. This episode takes all the complexities of her character and drains all of it out. She is now just a stereotypical "mean wife" character who hates her husband for no reason. Finally, and in my opinion the biggest fault of this episode is having blitzo and stolas meet as kids. This genuinely takes away from the relationship of these two and it feels like something that a very inexperienced fan of the show would write if they were asked to write an episode for it. All in all, a very mixed episode. Some fantastic parts, and some that I found to be very unsatisfactory. As always though, I did enjoy this episode.
