even a zombie" Inspired by both Disney films and their love for the zombie genre, Joe Swanson and Jason Lerner wrote Zombo, a short film musical about a zombie (Nicholas Harden) who has a dream to become a singer in a musical. His dreams would seem unachievable – after all, he is a zombie – but when a chance opportunity comes to star in a new musical titled "Phantom of the Ice Cream Parlor" our protagonist gets his break and against popular sentiment, he is allowed on stage to sing to the masses.
Zombo runs a brisk 14 minutes 30 seconds, but director Alberto Belli keeps composer Austin Wintory's music flowing while scattering dramatic and comedic moments held together tightly by the competent cast that includes Nicci Claspell, Dylan Vox and Kelly Connell.
Back in 2008, Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog proved that obscure genres can be carefully crafted into musical shorts to mass approval. Zombo furthers that pathway. An even mix of comedy and music that still keeps the integrity of zombie genre were words that I never could have imagined thrust from my fingertips in precisely that descriptive order. But that is exactly what Zombo represents. A fun frolic of a film that puts the Walking Dead in Broadway shoes and keeps its audience tapping its feet while rooting for a carving brain eater that follows the heart that no longer beats within them.
