The FCC just voted 3-2 along party lines to dismantle the set of protections that go by the shorthand “net neutrality,” and it’s bad news for consumers, media-lovers, and small internet businesses alike.
Completely reversing all of net neutrality is a huge departure from what consumers are used to, and in the long run the consequences could be absolutely disastrous. But there’s a lot of confusion and a lack of clarity about how the demise of net neutrality will happen and hurt individuals.
Although the Commission just voted to kill the rules, the internet won’t immediately be split into tiered bundles today or even this year. If it net neutrality does end up doomed, the reality of “how” is slower, more complicated, and more insidious than that. But the good news is, it still may not be doomed at all. Here’s the reality of whether we’ll get there,...

And now we finally get to the best one of all. The true peak of Buffy. The Season where it truly was at its finest hour.
After a shaky Season Four, Buffy returned in style for its fifth season, constructing 22 episodes full of strong characters, a brilliant arc, heartbreaking moments and some of the best hours that the show ever produced. Whilst all the previous Seasons of Buffy had numerous good qualities, it’s fifth just seemed to have everything. From the intense, gripping story-arc of Season Two, to the consistently brilliant episodes of Season Three, to the superb stand-alone hours of Season Four, Season Five is an example of a show at full throttle. It’s brimming with confidence, it knows exactly where it’s taking the story – and explores new routes for our characters that we didn’t even think we’d see.
So, what makes Season Five so great?...

Twenty-five years ago -- November 25, 1992, to be exact -- in the city of Agrabah, a street rat, an outspoken princess and an eager-to-please genie were at the center of another groundbreaking animated musical from Walt Disney Pictures.
Telling the story of a young man who falls in love with a princess and befriends a genie as he aspires for something more in his life, Aladdin quickly became a touchstone in Disney’s canon of animated films. Following the romance-driven The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast, the 1992 movie boasted a bigger sense of humor -- largely thanks to Robin Williams’ performance as Genie -- and more action.
Earning universal praise, Aladdin earned $217 million at the U.S. box office and maintains a 94 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. But like its predecessors, the soundtrack, with music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Howard Ashman, propelled it to awards success, winning it two Academy...

Melissa Joan Hart‘s three sons with husband Mark Wilkerson buck the expectation of a tech-obsessed next generation growing up with screens constantly in their faces.
“There isn’t really one thing they value more than going outside to play with neighborhood kids,” the actress, 41, tells People in this week’s issue. “They don’t really like electronics, and they are just as happy reading as playing with toys.”
Though the Watcher in the Woods director says she wishes she could limit screen time even more for Tucker, 5, Braydon, 9½, and Mason, 11, she considers it a victory to have curbed her kids’ soda cravings.

It’s a good time to be a Red Dwarf fan. After years off our screens, and talk of a movie that ultimately came to naught, the show made its return with Back To Earth in 2009. UKTV Freeview channel Dave was revealed as the new home of the show, and it’s fair to say that they’ve treated the small rouge one very well in the years since the big comeback.

At 255 titles, the Toronto International Film Festival’s smorgasbord is 20 percent smaller than last year — and still overwhelming. A number of filmmakers took creative risks that paid off with exuberant praise, from Darren Aronofsky’s outrageous “mother!” to Guillermo del Toro’s inimitable “The Shape of Water,” but many others found themselves in the doghouse, or worse, utterly ignored.
Buyers were unhappy that there wasn’t much to choose from at this sellers’ market, because many distributors cherry-picked the more promising titles ahead of time — which is its own risk, as when The Orchard’s La riot drama “Kings” didn’t meet high expectations.
Here’s how the festival shook out.

First time Producer Alexander Cooper has passionately stomped his feet into the world of independent cinema with erotic thriller Parallel. So, we caught up with him to talk about his filmmaking journey so far and the challenges of producing a self-financed indie film.
How did you become a producer and what made you want to produce Parallel?
I’ve always had an interest in film since a young age. And I’ve always wondered what it would take to make a film, although I hadn’t had any formal training in it. I had been working in a totally different sphere for quite a long time, I’d been working in law in the city, totally different. There were big changes in my life, work had dried up and my father had passed away. It was around 2014 when all these changes were going on.

Dani Leventhal's PlatonicThis review, I think, might best be understood as an example of “slow criticism.” This is a term coined by Filmkrant editor Dana Linssen to describe “wayward articles,” ones that have a personal or political element that is somehow not timely. We can imagine that the reverse of this is “fast criticism,” the up-to-the-minute report from a film festival, the 140-character response tweeted out the minute the first press screening is over. These thoughts are not timely. The Whitney Biennial closed on June 11th, and the film program screened its final program on May 21st. So although I expect many of these films to have a life long after their appearance at the Whitney, I am not providing any kind of late-breaking news flash from the film or art world by writing about these works in this forum. But in a way, that is the point. So, to re-cap, Cersie (Lena Heady) and Jon (Kit Harrington) finished up last Season with an added crown above their hairline. Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) finally stopped sodding about in Essos and hopped on a Greyjoy fleet on its way back to the Seven Kingdoms. The Hound (Rory McCann) turned out to have miraculously survived his duel with Brienne (Gwendoline Christie) after all and Arya (Maisie Williams)? Well, she finally became the bad-ass dangerous assassin we’d been promised from the start, taking beautiful revenge on old Walder Frey (the First Doctor himself, David Bradley).

Picking up from last week's Extremis, Doctor Who series 10 moves on to The Pyramid At The End Of The World. Here are our thoughts...
10.7 The Pyramid At The End Of The World
Interesting. Not without a few problems, but interesting, and plenty in this one to make you want the gap between this and the next episode to be less than seven days.
Picking up in the aftermath of last week’s Extremis, The Pyramid At The End Of The World is an episode of Doctor Who that continues to ramp things up, as the threat to the world escalates. It’s the kind of episode, in fact, that you could imagine fitting a few episodes later in a run, with a growing threat and some other stuff I'm not going to talk about here.

On this episode of The Originals, "High Water and a Devil's Daughter," Freya gathers information from Dominic that leads to Mystic Falls, Elijah takes matters into his own hands forcing Vincent to call on an old friend for help and Klaus calls a truce with Marcel.
Klaus and Elijah believe Dominic is dead, not realizing that thanks to some witchy juju, he's been brought back. What they do know is that anyone could be one of the Hollow's disciples which means Freya puts a barrier spell on the compound guaranteeing that nobody gets in or out. Klaus doesn't like being benched while their enemies are busy trying to resurrect the Hollow, nor is he pleased to learn that Elijah will not be hanging around to play Scrabble -- he's got an errand to run. Klaus has to be content with destroying the jaw bone Hayley discovered in her family's storage unit.

Why is Talia being evil to Oliver?
That was a key question four our round table participants after Arrow Season 5 Episode 16.
Below, TV Fanatics Steve Ford, Kathleen Wiedel, Jim Garner and Robin Harry discuss Talia, Helix and Susan's fate...
What did you think of Talia in the present?
Steve: I've really enjoyed the introduction of Talia this season, so I was glad to see her show up in the present. I'm also happy that they addressed the issue of Oliver having killed her father, and thus giving her motive in helping Adrian.
Even though it was a predictable turn of events, it is a nice change to have Oliver up against two main villains this season, and now that all the cards are now on the table, I'm looking forward to seeing these feuds further develop.

Documentaries tend to do well at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, and each year several manage to get into the audience top-10. The 2017 edition has proven to be no exception, as there are three documentaries in the top-5 alone. One of these is Jung Joonsuk's Bamseom Pirates Seoul Inferno, which shows some of the exploits and motivations of a controversial duo of South Korean musicians. Consisting of drummer "mastermind" Kwon Yong-man and bass player "informant minion" Jang Sung-geon, the Bamseom Pirates are a band whose music is not easy to peg. What they do is, in their own words, "just garbage and noise", but they're always selling themselves short. You can call their act punk, or black metal, or experimental, or performance art, or...

The time for constantly updating predictions is upon us! (Also, Happy Holidays to you and yours) Today, taking a quick break from Academy Award predictions, I’m turning my attention to the Golden Globes. A notable precursor, Globe picks can sometimes mean a lot or a little, depending on the year. Predicting them can often be an exercise in futility, but we press on, regardless. Personally, I kind of enjoy their unpredictability, when it happens, as least. This year could go either way, and that’s part of the fun. Some analysis will be up first, but then…predictions will be coming your way, as per the usual. Below you will see how I think the Globes will go down. Currently, it looks to me like things will remain a battle between Damien Chazelle’s La La Land and Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight for the most wins, with Kenneth Lonergan’s...

Plenty of shows these days embrace their inner batshit insanity. Challenging norms via wild narratives or atypical execution is so deep within their nature that the show thrives on such inherent madness. Here at IndieWire, we refer to such efforts as “bonkers” TV, and Hulu’s latest original series, “Shut Eye,” could certainly be a candidate if it ever fully leans into its freshly bizarre elements.
After all, this is a show that constructs a climactic scene in which a woman walks between two rows of gypsies in a candlelit East L.A. mansion as the offended parties spit on her. And that’s just the start of her punishment for breaking the gypsy code. What comes next is enough to make even hardened TV viewers raise an eyebrow.

Now that’s a synopsis I can get behind. If only the film matched up to it… Instead The Evil in Us gives us six annoying pricks doing stupid, annoying things – so much so that we, the audience, wish them dead, and the sooner the better.
Yes, this is one of those films where the ineptitude of the characters lets the entire concept of the movie down. Ideally we...

Bradford Young‘s filmography remains slim, but the work displayed in his repertoire — among them Pariah, Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, Selma, A Most Violent Year — impresses to the point that his involvement has become something of a qualitative promise. The praise has continued with his latest feature, Arrival, an effort that marks something of a breakthrough: along with being his first sci-fi feature, it’s Young’s foray into thoroughly contemporary environments.
While at the Camerimage International Film Festival, we sat down for a long, surprisingly personal conversation in which Young reveals his personal philosophies, creative insecurities, and the many steps that go into creating an image for Denis Villeneuve. The entire process was a total pleasure.
The Film Stage: In preparing for this interview, I found that many asked about the novelty of shooting a sci-fi movie after devoting your career to dramas. One aspect of this that...

Ah the Green Hornet, definitely an underused property. I mean yes we had a remake a few years ago that was okay but luckily there’s people out there that see potential in a reboot.
Okay so was I a fan of the original Green Hornet, nah. I mean the biggest thing for me was that it helped the career of Bruce Lee. And even as a comic reader the times the character has appeared have never been long lasting. What I can admire is that he still has a following of fans that know of the character and that alone shows there’s potential. Well the rights have apparently lapsed and have now been picked up by Paramount and Chernin Entertainment who are looking to make an edgier Green Hornet. Deadline is reporting that Gavin O’Connor (Warrior, The Accountant) looks to reinvigorate the almost 80 year old property.

Back in 2011, actor Seth Rogen and his creative partner Evan Goldberg could do no wrong. The pair had penned such great films as Superbad and Pineapple Express, and while two comedy writers taking on the iconic green-masked crime-fighter seemed like an odd fit, most were open to the idea. After all, even if Rogen and Goldberg had mostly made comedies, their films had a solid emotional core backbone to them that put them a cut above your standard comedies of the time. If they’d made sure to have that same backbone with the Green Hornet, and change the skin a bit, it could turn out pretty good, right?
Well, sadly, it didn’t turn out well. There are certain films crimes never should commit. One of them is being boring. While I wouldn’t call Green Hornet an inept film, I’d call it beyond...

Get ready for a realistic and badass Green Hornet reboot from the director of The Accountant...
The 2011 Michel Gondry/Seth Rogen light comedy take on a Green Hornet movie didn't work as well as everybody wanted. The solution? Well, if you ask The Accountant director Gavin O'Connor, who is going to occupy the director's chair for a remake, it's to take things as far in the opposite direction as possible and make a Green Hornet reboot that focuses heavily on the badass vigilante elements of the character. The new Green Hornet movie is at Paramount with a script by Sean O'Keefe.

I remember kind of liking Michel Gondry's The Green Hornet when it came out back in 2011, but even just a few years later, the film has largely been forgotten. It's one of the few superhero franchises of the past decade that didn't launch a franchise, but Paramount isn't content with letting the property sit on a shelf and collect dust when there's the possibility of money to be made.
Deadline reports that the studio has acquired the rights to Green Hornet after they lapsed following Sony's 2011 film, and they've now hired Gavin O'Connor (The Accountant, Warrior) to direct "a film that will overhaul the image of Britt Reid into an edgy protagonist capable of being the catalyst for a new franchise." Sean O’Keefe will write the screenplay. O'Connor certainly loves the characters, as evidenced by his quotes to the site:

Deadline is reporting today that Paramount Pictures and Chernin Entertainment will be rebooting The Green Hornet and they’ve set The Accountant and Warrior director Gavin O’Connor to helm. The studio is looking to re-imagine main character Britt Reid as an “edgy protagonist capable of being the catalyst for a new franchise.”
“I’ve been wanting to make this movie— and create this franchise— since I’ve wanted to make movies,” O’Connor said. “As a kid, when most of my friends were into Superman and Batman, there was only one superhero who held my interest— The Green Hornet. I always thought he was the baddest badass because he had no superpowers.
The Green Hornet was a human superhero. And he didn’t wear a clown costume. And he was a criminal— in the eyes of the law— and in the eyes of the criminal world. So all this felt real to me.

Danny Boyle’s 1996 cult classic “Trainspotting” is an interesting juxtaposition. It’s bleak subject matter and disorienting aesthetic doesn’t necessarily make you want to watch it endlessly, yet it’s characters are so memorable and, dare we say, lovable in the most messed up way that you can’t help but want to spend more time with them. That’s part of what makes “Trainspotting 2” one of the more unique sequels hitting theaters next year. Titled “T2,” the film is a massive reunion that finds Boyle, screenwriter John Hodge and stars Ewan McGregor Ewen Bremner, Jonny Lee Miller, and Robert Carlyle all back together again.

During last night's Australians in Film Awards Gala at NeueHouse in Hollywood, Et caught up with director James Wan and gave a little tease at what the tone of his version of Aquaman is going have.
Wan said:
"I kind of don't want to give too much away but know this: The spirit that I'm going for is like a classic sort of swashbuckling action adventure, sort of high seas adventure story. It's ultimately a quest story in the spirit of Raiders of the Lost Ark meets Romancing the Stone."
The upcoming DC film stars Jason Momoa as Aquaman and just last week Justice League director Zack Snyder gave fans a look at Amber Heard as Mera the queen of Atlantis.
Wan had this to say about that:

When it comes to Rob Zombie as a filmmaker I’ll admit I have something of a soft spot for his work. He knows his horror and never bows down for the constant calls to conform to the politically correct society that seems to dominate the entertainment world now. With the release of 31, the question is, has he managed to pull off another The Devil’s Rejects or is this more of a Halloween 2?
The first thing you’ll notice with the story of 31 is that it is in very familiar territory. A group of carnival employees (including of course Sheri Moon Zombie) are travelling cross-country on Halloween. They are soon kidnapped and are entered into...

Sonic has gone on countless adventures with the best ones being highlighted in a recent article. However with a new game being announced should the new game take from the best, or create something new? Find out after the jump.
A new Sonic title is being announced at San Diego Comic Con this year, and coming with it is a new movie partnership with Sony Pictures. We assume that means Sonic will be hitting more than 3Ds (A new Sonic Boom is set to release this year) and we may even get a full blown experience to boot. So where do we hope Sonic goes? Glad you asked.
A Whole New Adventure
The Sonic Team needs to look at a title like Shadow The Hedgehog (stick with me here, I'm not saying re-make Shadow) and go in a new direction again. Core audiences probably won’t be too thrilled that old dynamics are being changed,...

Shooting a feature film in Cuba comes with a unique set of challenges that make the usual logistical hurdles of filmmaking seem like nothing. Still, those who have had the opportunity to shoot in the socialist country say they wouldn’t trade the experience for anything. As the U.S. trade embargo with Cuba comes to an end, film production in the country is expected to ramp up.
While Hollywood studio productions like “Fast 8” and “Transformers: The Last Knight” claimed to be “making history” earlier this year by being the first American films to shoot in Havana in half a century, two American directors had already shot independent films in Cuba on the heels of the relaxed travel restrictions by the United States government: Bob Yari’s “Papa Hemingway in Cuba” and Ben Chace’s “Sin Alas” (“Without Wings”).

Picking up from the season opener, Form And Void finds Sam desperately hunting for a cure to the infection that could turn him rabid after a few hours while Baby Amara starts showing off her powers, using letter cubes fired into walls to send messages to her fearful guardians. Jenna calls Dean back so he can work out why the baby's going all Linda Blair, only to find Crowley already there. Castiel's curse is still in effect as he's captured and tortured by two of his angelic brothers, apparently attempting to find answers about what's happening on Earth.
The season opener was all about asking questions - Who is Amara? Will Sam be cured? What do the angels want with Castiel?...
