slow...bad...rip off
trashgang24 September 2010
How come that sometimes really bad movies get a world wide release? This flick is such an example. I have nothing against bad movies, mostly they are so bad that they become good but this here, no way. But I can guess after the release of Dead Snow coming from the same country and being a huge success in the genre everything made their will be released. It is stated as the first Norwegian grindhouse. No F***ing way. What we have here is a movie that rip off others. The so called grindhouse that is used is a copy

done in Death Proof and Planet Terror. At some moments the film reel is at his end, black screen or when they are making love you get an message, reel missing, sorry. Helloooooooooooooo, seen that and done better in Grindhouse. The story line, completely rip off of I Spit On Your Grave only that one is much better. And then for the use of slo-mo, remember They Call Me One Eye (Thriller: A Cruel Picture)when someone is hit, here we see the same but much worser. The first 45 minutes nothing happens and it's so slow that you want to push the fast forward. Even the nudity doesn't work, the rape scene is so worse. This is bad, really bad...a real whore in the scene.

Hora ... A not-so-cruel and amateurish picture.
Coventry22 November 2010
The DVD cover proudly exclaims that "Hora" is Norway's very first authentic grindhouse flick. OK, it's not an actual lie, but everyone who's only slightly into horror and exploitation know that the only genuine Scandinavian grindhouse film is "Thriller: A Grim Picture". That infamous classic, directed by Bo Arne Vibenius, is a Swedish effort but nevertheless an essential ancestor for "Hora". Furthermore this is the ultra-thin plot outline of "I Spit on your Grave" all over again. The young and aspiring writer, Rikke, heads out to the old and abandoned parental house in the remote Norwegian countryside. A girl, not even particularly beautiful one, all alone in a town full of sexually deviant yokels, that's just asking for trouble. After a couple of tense and unsettling encounters, three dimwits rape the poor girl and she plots an excruciatingly painful vengeance for all of them. End of plot. The character drawings in this film are hopelessly stereotypical. The lead punk is the girl's ex-boyfriend (from when they were 8 years old), the psychopath of the threesome is a police officer and the third one is a mentally retarded video store clerk with a passion of horror movies. The poor girl is beaten, carved up and viciously raped three times in a row, yet when she awakes from her state of shock, she promptly begins with the extracting of her revenge. Her killing spree is quite extreme, with buckets of fake blood and strawberry syrup. The description of the murders sound repulsive, but the make-up effects are so basic and amateurish that this film wouldn't even upset a small child. The film is only sick and mean-spirited in tone and in its references towards old classics, like for example the castration sequence. The main problem with "Hora" isn't necessarily the fact that it's derivative and unoriginal because, let's face it, nobody expects any kind of innovation in rape & revenge films. What I hated most about this were the pretentious and pseudo-artistic ambitions of writer/director Reinert Kiil. For some reason he thought he was making an experimental art-house masterpiece instead of an ordinary low-keyed exploitation flick, me thinks. The rape sequences are boring and wannabe artsy, without sound except for a really annoying buzzing. There are more oddities, like occasional switching to black & white photography and missing film spool messages. Another thing that struck me as really stupid was that every brand, whether appearing on a shopping bag or a beer can, is made blurry? Is that the opposite of product placement, perhaps? In short: I know the DVD cover of "Hora" looks cool and enticing (even fell for it myself), but it's truly an inferior film and a waste of time. If you do want to see a revival of the 70's rape & revenge genre that is truly raw, shocking, worthwhile and memorable, check out the Argentinean "I'll Never Die Alone".

A waste of time - utter bull-crap!
berencamlost6 February 2010
This film should be banned. It's a copy of "I spit on your grave", with elements from "Last house on the left" cut into the mix. It takes plagiarism to a new level. I really hope whoever owns the rights to the films mentioned above sues Mr. Kiil for all he's worth, and then some... As if this is not enough, the entire film is poorly lit, shot on what appears to be hand-held DV cam, and some cheesy black and white "8mm"-filter has been applied here and there. The visual effects are less than awful, I've seen better on Sesame Street. The acting is non-existent, and the audio is muffled and poor. To make things worse (for those Scandinavians unfortunate enough to see this film) the actors speak a charming mix of Norwegian, Swedish, danish and bullshit.

DO NOT SEE THIS FILM!

Painful for all the wrong reasons!
user-655-77004917 February 2010
Warning: Spoilers
First of all let me point out that this movie is made by people who says they love making movies, and have watched these types of films all their life. But as we all know one don't have to be a good filmmaker for having seen a lot of film. And I truly believe that this is the best example of that I have ever seen. People who make movies for fun can get a huge thrill out of showing they're product to friends and family. This is always a good laugh. And that should have been the case with "HORA". Instead it hit the stores in Norway a couple of weeks ago.

The lowest of low of short films on you tube have better quality than this vicious attempt of "making" a movie. It seriously look like fifteen year old that have discovered daddy's old VHS camera in the attic. But seriously people! Sometimes that camera should be left alone. "HORA" is a mix of bad camera-work, shitty lighting, if any. Sound was lousy, editing was painful and let me just say that the acting is so horrible it almost ripped me a new one. Poor Isabel Vibe. She should seriously stick to making porn. But also, she doesn't even strike me as a porn-actress either. And the lead bad-guy is so weak that I can't find the right words to explain it. It was written in the DVD-booklet that he has worked as an actor for many years. LOL! Calling yourself an actor these days doesn't mean a lot. And these are just two of them. They're also bragging about having the great Norwegian actor Jørgen Langhelle in the movie. He is seen on a television set in the beginning for a few seconds. This is a great example of false advertisement to get some attention around what the makers hopefully see is crap for themselves. But I think not.

I usually love bad exploitation-films. We watch them at parties accompanied with loads of drinks and laugh at the screen. "HORA" however is the biggest party-killer i have ever experienced. I think we went home after seeing it. "HORA" has gone way beyond that limit were film is so bad it's funny. It's just extremely poorly made, and boring as h**l.

For an exploitation movie it's not even shocking. The rape scenes looks bad and tame. Maybe that's because of the horrible way they are shot? Maybe in fact it is shocking, but the quality of the whole thing is so low that i lost focus on what I was watching? I was mostly gasping through the whole thing. I never expected it. If these "filmmakers" actually made this film so bad on purpose, fair enough. But really bad choice. Things like these don't go away. And if these "filmmakers" actually are filmmakers they should seriously consider changing their line of work. Because if people and companies find out about their involvement, they'll never see any work in the business again.

I see that someone has written a review that the film doesn't look like "I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE" Please! The director obviously has great admiration for it, and has no creativity on his own. So why not do the easiest. "I spit.."really knocked my socks off. Shocking and disgusting. Exactly what these films are about. If Kiil would have pushed the boundaries in "HORA" a bit more it might have been a little memorable. At least for the right reasons.

I never urge people not to go see movies if they stink. More the opposite. I want them to see it so we can talk about it after-wards. So by all means people. Go out, buy, rent or in this case I strongly recommend downloading.

I read that the film took ten days to shoot, with a budget of 200 000 NOK.(Norwegian funds) Although this is extremely low even for a low-budget, I can't imagine what they spent it on. It couldn't be the crew, because they all lack quality. Not decent equipment either, cause this is completely absent in "HORA". It looks like old VHS-camera quality. So I have no idea what this money was spent on. Probably food.

The Norwegian horror scene has really risen in the last decade. "VILLMARK", "FRITT VILT I & 2", "ROVDYR", "DØD SNØ", "SNARVEIEN" and now coming "FRITT VILT 3" proves that we know horror. Although "HORA" is not a "horrormovie", most people think of it as one. And it gives the genre a really, really bad name. Kudos!

The cover art (which by the way is so ripped off from "ROVDYR") also tells us that the film has been nominated at several festivals, and even won an award at one called "but". I'm trying to picture what kinda festival this is, since "HORA" won best picture. I'm seeing a dark basement with projector, cigarette smoke and bottled beers. And also plastic food-hall-chairs to sit on. And who's in the jury of this thing? Are they deaf AND blind? And slow? I would love to experience a festival like this just to see what other films they screen there. Troma is probably Oscar-material compared to it.

But I'm gonna end this comment with something positive. To all of you out there with a dream of making a movie? Just do it. It could never be as bad as "HORA" even if you try to fail. And you'll also see nationwide DVD-release ☺

Disappointing
paul_haakonsen18 May 2010
I watched this movie shortly after having watched "Død Snø" (Dead Snow), one of the coolest Norwegian movies ever, so this was somewhat of a disappointment. Don't get me wrong, this movie is not an utter complete waste of time. It is in itself alright, I just had my hopes up.

The story is pretty straight forward, no real deep plot or innovative things going on here. That is one of the disappointments. The movie lacks something that makes it stand out from other movies.

The acting is mediocre, and the dialogue is next to non-existent. The images and scenery is nice, except for the parts where they made it like the movie breaks down on the movie rolls. What was that all about? A word of warning, this movie might offend some people in the audience, as it is fairly graphical and explicit. There are some pretty rough scenes in the movie that may not be suitable for the easily offended.

Having watched this movie, I must say that I was left with somewhat of a hollow feeling afterward. Something profound was missing from this movie. It did have potential, but didn't punch through properly. If you like extreme movies that are a bit "out there", this might fall into your liking.

Now, approaching the movie from a low-budget creation way, it was actually nicely put together. That was somewhat of a good achievement. They took whatever meager fundings and props they had and utilized it for maximum effect. Hats off for that.

The movie is in Norwegian and Danish language, so it will be gibberish to most non-Scandinavians. But subtitles are a blessing here.

Complete trash - don't waste your time
rastaizzy3 October 2012
Warning: Spoilers
An attempt at Grindhouse or not, this movie is awful. No dialogue, no plot, useless violence and horrid rape scenes. Sound is ridiculous and it kept switching to this fake film flickering thing. As some one who remembers the flickering of a broken film at the drive-ins during the 70's, this over use of it is especially annoying.

If you want to see a good Norwegian horror Dead Snow is a much better choice. Like other reviewers, I also feel it was ripping off a number of other horror movies.

The violence was pretty bad but at the same time lost its edge with the horrible directing or miss-timed shots which I am sure was intentional.

I fast forwarded just to see if there was something redeemable about it. There was not.

Attractive no budget Scandinavian slasher film; obviously not for everyone
Andy-2968 March 2010
Warning: Spoilers
A solid slasher film from Norway. The argument is taken from many US exploitation movies, and is not terribly original. Nevertheless, it is competently made (despite its almost zero budget) and it held my attention for an hour and a half despite seeing it late at night, when I was ready to go to bed. The plot: A young woman returns to her rural hometown for an unspecified reason; soon she is harassed in the remote house where she stays by two young men she knew from her childhood (there are some issues about something that happened in the past between them, but I never made sense of them and I honestly don't think they are that important). Eventually, these men (the Norwegian equivalent of rednecks) enter her house and brutally rape her. Her even more brutal revenge on them is the movie's final act. Featuring a hand held camera, editing tricks and amateurish acting (the main actress, reportedly a famous porn star in Norway, is quite effective in her role) is a good example of a slasher film, not particularly original but very effective.

A mediocre MUST experience...
Hitmanofnorway4 December 2011
This film is made on a shoelace budget, here we can see that it's taken a lot of inspiration from other rape and revenge films such as I Spit On Your Grave and Last House on the Left. And many people may see this as pure plagiarism. But this is a film made by a director with a heart for Grindhouse films and has spent every penny to get his debut completed. There are a lot of things that could have been better (Audio/Acting), but this movie is something any exploitation film fan should experience.

Watch this film, as the first Norwegian grindhouse film come to life.

Pesonaly I can't wait for the sequel. That's where The Whore really begins.

The movie gets into some pretty freaky territory
tamtamaralat4 June 2012
Hora probably work best when watched with an enthusiastic group, and a copious amount of alcohol on standby. How do you outdo one of the most notorious, extreme rape revenge movies ever made ? Simple: make an art film. Though still chock full of the usual body boinking and assorted gross outs, this is a far more elegant and polished piece of work than its predecessor, more concerned with a mood of unease and melancholia than ISOYG and THOTEOTP and LHOTL. Hora does everything a exploitation film is supposed to do. Shocks, thrill you, make you bored but not in a bad way. Make you feel Payne. Sorrow. Horny. Makes you sick! Gives you chicks with guns. Reel life porn. Slashes you. Splattes you. Feel you. Bleed you. It will rape your soul! I think it is the best rape revenge film ever! Maybe the best exploitation/grind-house film the last 20 years.

People who don't like it can shoot them self! I love it!

good Norwegian horror
wvisser-leusden5 February 2012
I bought 'Hora' (= Norwegian for 'whore') because I was anxious to know what a Norwegian grind-house film looks like. As we all know, Norway doesn't have a great film tradition, and the texts on my DVD-box did not encourage a purchase either: "the very bad in bad, bad taste", as well as "low budget". All issued by "Sodementecinema".

So starting out from a zero expectation, I was pleasantly surprised by 'Hora's contents. We are presented with a coherent story, and anybody familiar with Norway easily recognizes its very Norwegian setting. Tense is built up well throughout, and all key-scenes are as they should be: gruesome. 'Hora's picturing convincingly invites you to participate, the more so as at times its color is replaced by black and white. On top of that, the fluently passing by of its pictures is interrupted at times, allowing you a few seconds to recover.

'Hora' surely makes a good watch, keeping you on your seat from beginning to end.

Who would have thought that Norway would deliver the all-time rape revenge movie?
marxx_feelgoodfilm19 May 2014
The film has been told a lot of crap about. Much is probably because the close it has to I spit on your grave . But this film does not take more than the actual plot. So portrays the situation in the same way as ISOYG . Then you can throw -pip- at 90 % of the films coming out . The movie is really about, us as viewers . Why do we see this? And we know there comes a rape, why not turn off ? It gets a strange feeling up my body that says " I want the woman to be raped ." And this is where it stands out from all the other rape n revenge movies ever made. For me this was a masterpiece and is insanely proud that it comes from Norway . For who would have thought? I saw it for the first time during the screening at the cultural center in Oslo ( Chateauneuf ) . I had not heard of the movie or the director before. The screening was arranged through student radio , Radio Nova . There was strip show and very raw tens during the entire night. Some failed to see the movie finished, and one guy puked in the doorway. Causing even more power for me. Now it's been five years . And I saw it again . The film is almost gotten better through the years. All the complaints of the film is almost what I think is best with it. That is precisely why it was made . To make a tribute to all the -pip- movies in the same genre , but still ask the question to us , the audience . Why watch ?

The sequel was not as good although it seems more expensive and more professional. But it lacked that little edge. What it should have, is that it is Norway's most original film. And the best thing about the director is that he has not received money from the state to make a movie. Everything is self-funded. So you can probably safely be said he is the only one in the country who just work underground. And thus is the only one that can mirror Norway to the outside world within the genre. Keep on Kiil! Looking forward to the "house". You never know what this man comes with! But maybe if the government pays a film in the future we will see just -pip-. I think we need directors outside the system. I can't think of a better director to make a viking film one day. Bloody, messy, dirty and mean.

the third best rape revenge film!
eriksson_gotebus27 December 2012
Warning: Spoilers
This movie surprised me a lot. I had so little hopes for this after all the bad reviews on the net. It is said that Hora is a plagiarism of ISOYG. This I will begin by saying is pure bullshit. If you like no budget films then this a top 10 's. Really! Enjoyed it just as good as the first time I saw Evil Dead and Bad Taste. It surprised me as much. The fact that people say it is a copy of ISOYG is only because there are so many spoiled people out there who are not into like zero budget films. people who have forgotten or never experienced the era of VHS Video Nasty and Razzel. Hora is about a woman who goes to the country and where she tortured and raped by three rednecks. So she takes revenge. This is the story of Hora. Same is the ISOYG. But one should be so picky you can say that all slasher films are copies of Friday the 13th or Halloween because it's about a gang of youths who gets killed by a man / woman with a knife. One by one they die. There are ingredients in a slasher film. Just as rape-revenge are the ingredients in a rape revenge film;) But Jennifer in ISOYR does not die. But Rikke in Hora does. She comes to life as a demon who later referring to the Hora. It's a completely different universe with this meta-expression. You do not really understand the meaning of this sub Hora, but it is easy to understand after you have seen the sequel. Layers of movie film on film. And this I have actually never seen before. Seen Kufs series where he spoke to the camera. I've seen the Whore from 91 how much of the film is narrated documentary, but the basic story is told in a fantasy story. And I've seen many documentary films with meta universe. The Naked Gun could have been called a meta film. but have never seen a meta movie that plays as deep as Hora.

The film has bad-good Gorr effects The film is hard too watch some times because of the brutality The Acting is bad, but good for such kind of film. The film has very much nudity The film has a dirty expression The film has a beautiful and nasty cover The film has good special features. I have the Dutch DVD The picture is a bit muddy and the sound a tiny bit weak. But in total, it is precisely this that surprised me the most. For the sound and the picture is really good for being a zero budget. One of the best I've seen to date.

Best in the test
marvingreys11 February 2010
Hora (the Whore) was, as mentioned above, a best in test good meta film. Reinert Kiil definitely knew where he was going with this. Isabel Vibe, porn chick, delivers, (she never did make a bad performance, did she? I mean, shes the best porn star acting in a motion picture... and Gaute Næsheim is believable as the retarded Ronny. Kenneth Falkenberg and Jørgen Langhelle perform to the excellent of their roles. It was shot with approximatively 240 000 Kr (50 000 dollars) of budget in a 10 days at a cabin in Oslo. Its Norways most talked about strait to DVD movies of all times. What did Kiil do wrong? Nothing!!!! A 27 year old man with love to the cinema. And the Whore shows that! I read that a other guy said that this movie is a copy of i spit on your grave. Have you watch the film???? the Movie is so far away from ISOYG! Its like saying that Possidon avenger is a copy of Titanic just because they have a boat in them! the Movie Hora is going to rock Norway and make a land mark on how bad Norwegian films are. There are no directors in Norway b-side Bent Hamer and Caprino (RIP) who have had soul and class in there films. I feel that Reinert is the next big director out there.

Last but not... the Whore is now one of my favorite films of all time. it was like when Bad Taste was on the TV. I loved it and I knew that Jackson was in Hollywood pretty soon!

Ps. Sorry my bad bad English! I'm getting better every day!

An art film in a cheap genre
hansyboy_mma867 August 2012
Warning: Spoilers
When I put on film, I had no idea what I would be presented with! It had a cool exploitation cover with guns and blood. It looked nasty gruffly on the back of the cover. And the text told me that the film had been banned and that people have passed out of it. I can not quite get this out of the movie. But the movie worked very well on their way. With a lot of dark and bleak humor. Cool poor 70's effects. And many plot holes that you see the director has brought out on purpose. Hora is a film I will never forget. And given all exploitation films made in Hollywood a hit in the face when this cost just 20 000 dollars in the budget stretches far above everything else they manage to do in USA. What I can warn of is that the film brought out something in the viewer. Not like Baise Moi does provide you with the nasty scenes that make you sick. But Hora bring up the guilt in you. You are looking forward to the rape. When I Spit On Your Grave appeared, people dreaded the rape. But Hora makes you Iver. It gave me a sleazy feel to the body. While there are many scenes in the film is incredibly well filmed. And I liked the music very well! The negative I can say is that the dialog is very low. I do not understand much Norwegian, but it is impossible to understand something when it feels like they talking with there mouth shut. The acting was not that good. But I think Isabel Vibe and the retarded dude did a good job.
