Wow. What a sinister little short this was. But that's okay for me, I actually enjoy very much dark and sinister animations.
"Violeta, la pescadora del mar negro" was directed by Marc Riba and Anna Solanas, who also made another stop-motion animated short, the sweet and romantic "Lupe & Bruno". But this is a completely different kind of work.
Unlike "Lupe & Bruno", this is a horror story, and despite the innocent, almost cute appearance of the main character, "Violeta" is anything but innocent, being incredibly dark from beginning to end. In fact, I think that this is so dark that it would make stuff like "The Street of Crocodiles" from the Brothers Quay and the "Alice in Wonderland" version of Jan vankmajer look almost light-hearted in comparison. And of course, this means that this is definitely NOT for kids (Little kids, at least) since it contains some graphic violence and disturbing imagery, which in my opinion was displayed in a very beautiful way.
Even when the animation isn't as polished as in films like "Coraline" or Tim Burton's "Corpse Bride", that kind of quality actually fits perfectly well for the grim mood of the story, making it more haunting.
Also, the ending song was quite beautiful in my opinion.
