The American girl opens up her heart and regains her confidence by reaching out to a junior high student she hasn't met before
noshouse15 August 2023
I'm from Taiwan, and this movie captures the breathtaking beauty of Taiwan's highlands so beautifully. Even though the storyline follows the familiar trope of love blossoming between people from different places, as a Taiwanese person, I'm genuinely delighted that the director included scenes featuring local street food stalls in Taiwan. It really struck a chord with me. Although the movie posters and trailers managed to convey the sense of romance, the reserved nature of the male lead, who didn't actively reciprocate feelings, gave the entire film a tonal shift towards a somewhat abrupt happy ending. Overall, I couldn't quite feel the emotional impact I was expecting after watching the movie. It just goes to show that experiencing something new allows us to witness the distinct cultures of the East and West. The American girl's effort to reach out to a junior high school student she hadn't previously known gradually opened up her heart and restored her confidence in life.

Better Than Expected
RogerOThornhill195924 August 2023
"Christian Films" can be a gamble in the story department, especially the small ones. Many are sweeter than milk and honey, and they sound a bit more like a preacher's sermon than a film. This one was actually kind of a surprise. The premise is a teacher taking a job in a different country, dealing with a class of mostly unwilling high school students from a very different cultural background. No, this isn't To Sir, With Love, but it isn't that far off from being a remake.

Other than the strong similarity to a great film, there are some interesting strengths. Chief among these is the filming location in Taiwan. It is really beautiful, with some absolutely stunning shots included. Some of the directorial choices of what NOT to show were interesting as well. The movie launches very quickly into the premise with a short description of why the lead chooses to travel halfway around the world to teach a bunch of kids she can't really understand, and there are characters who are significant to the story who barely appear on screen at all. One other thing that is almost entirely missing is subtitles of the Mandarin dialog. This puts you very much in the place of the teacher who can't speak the language, but it is still presented in a way that you know exactly what is happening.

To my delight the film does also steer clear of the "Christian Film" tendency to make movies into a kind of sermon. Instead, it chooses to show people who are Christian being people with everyday problems and failings which don't get solved just because of simple faith.

The weaknesses are mostly minor. Of course, it certainly isn't original. There are a couple of sound issues as well. Since you don't get subtitles, some of the translation you do get is from smartphone translation apps, which can be a little hard to follow. More distracting is that the film rushes a bit through the ending, and in the process takes the safe route to tie everything up in a nice happy package. This is a little cliché, be not as bad as your average Hallmark movie. Overall, it is just an enjoyable film.

Typical American White Girl Romance Movie
dontloveinvain13 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Wow I definitely don't like romance movies, but I decided to still watch it because it was supposed to have somewhat of a inspirational theme to it. As the younger sibling said in the movie while talking to her older sister, "Don't tell me about your typical, middle-class, White girl drama". It definitely portrayed how some people can't deal with small issues compared to much bigger issues that people in other countries face everyday. I really didn't like the slow pace of the movie, and the main character irritated me because she was way too melodramatic. But the cinegraphic shots were absolutely breathtaking, and made me want to visit Thailand one day.

Worse Movie Ever
annie-5846018 February 2024
This movie was so bad. I only watched it for Justin Chien. It was giving white girl comes to Asia and gets upset when things don't go her way. Really not worth watching. They filmed it in Taiwan and didn't even show Taiwan's beauty to the fullest. It was actually so bad I wanted to cry.

In terms of acting, I am so sorry but I did not like Mackenzie's acting at all. It made the movie very awkward and cringe a lot of the times, on top of the already really cringey plot.

Kelsey's character comes to Taiwan to teach English, expects everyone else to understand English and communicate with her in her native language. She acts entitled because she came all the way from America to teach English when it was actually a privilege for her to be able to come to Asia in the first place.

All that aside, Justin was great and was the only reason I watched the movie till the end.

Very disappointing and lame
jerry-3259016 January 2024
It's a Christian movie! Like all Christian stuff, it's lame and boring. The story is super predictable. The middle school aged kids behaved and being treated like little kindergarteners. Her over 20 year old sister was just mad all the time like moody teenage girls. It would have been nice if they showed more of taiwan in addition to the couple minutes of places in Taiwan. A lota conversation sounded dubbed. The plots are just very poorly done. The kid who loved to draw was taken away and there was no follow up on his story. Taiwan is much more Americanized than what the movie portrayed. It could've easily be way better than this very juvenile and uninteresting story.

I Loved It

Warning: Spoilers
A young American woman gets left at the alter, broken hearted, she runs away to Taiwan. Leaving her sick mother and younger sister behind to fend for themselves. This of course causes resentment from the younger sibling. It's hard to blame her for wanting to live her life as she is very young. She is offered a teaching position in another country and decides to take a leap of faith.

You relate to her struggle to adapt to a foreign country, teaching students when you barely understand each other. Each student has their own struggles and personality which adds interest to the movie. This is when she relies on her co-worker to help her with fitting in with them and also shows her around briefly.

The scenery is absolutely stunning and will take your breath away. She and her co-worker get to know each other as they help each other learn their language, and bond with the students. They only spend time with each other, no romance, flirting, or physical contact. Their relationship starts off slowly as friendship builds into something deeper. This movie should have been a lot longer because they don't even hug or kiss before she is called back to America when her mother passes on. When she returns they shake hands and then get married. This film is not much of a romance at all but resembles a picking up the pieces, moving forward, and not blaming God for the hardships in your life. I still really enjoyed this film and was captured from start to finish. Although I was slightly disappointed that the romance was not fully developed, it only alluded to their feelings headed in a romantic way. The ending was abrupt and didn't make much sense. They should have just added another 20 minutes to show them at least go to a date or spend time in a romantic setting before they were married. Still, I think it was worth my time and I might actually watch it again.

Beautifully eye opening

Warning: Spoilers
It was wonderful to see this portrayal of Asia. The children, the Christianity, the school setting, the Boba Tea, all of it! The relationships between the kids, and the teachers. The scenery was absolutely gorgeous! All of the loss made for tender moments where people could relate to each other in spite of language barriers. The reality of the sister being angry, feeling left alone to deal with their dying mom, gave pause for introspection. I loved the innocence of the adult relationship. And the excitement of the kids over their relationship was sweet and endearing. It's a beautiful movie that my husband and I will watch again.

I love this movie!!!!
tink-355922 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I took a star off for the roaches. Gross!!!! I've watched this movie several times. The scenery is beautiful. The tall sunflower field, the goats, the buildings in Taiwan. I learned about bubble tea and happened to find it in the freezer section at ALDIs.

The movie is sweet and clean which is really hard to find these days. Except for the boy dancing, that was uncalled for.

The poor girl was devastated and she went to another country to get over it. She ended up meeting a man that truly cared about her. So sweet. They took their time, got to know each other, and fell in love. Beautiful!

So funny when Tricia said, "I'm boring." Later her teacher said, "Don't be boring, Tricia!"

Good clean fun! I'll watch it again and again.
