Paramount Pictures and Appian Way have won the film rights to T.J. English's upcoming Cuban mob crime novel "The Corporation". T.J. English's book is based on the real life saga of the Cuban mob from the 1950s to the 80s in Miami and New York.
Benicio Del Toro is attached to star as Jose Miguel Battle Sr., the leader of the powerful Cuban mafia who was trained by the CIA, imprisoned, and then returned to the U.S. to begin building a crime empire that dabbled in gambling, drug trafficking and murder.
David Matthews will adapt the script while Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Davisson, Andrew Rona, Jaydee Freixas, Tony Gonzalez and Alex Heineman are producing.

There was great news for actress Sarah Cooper announced on the official Facebook page of her talent agency, Houghton Talent, Inc. She has gone and booked herself an appearance on The Vampire Diaries, season three. No word yet as to who the actress from Atlanta hip hop film, Battle, and episodes of Army Wives will play on the CW’s paranormal series, which is all set to return to the small screen this September.
According to MTV cast members you already know and love are back in Georgia now to begin shooting for the new season. The actors enjoyed letting fans in on the back to work mentality via Twitter.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with Step Off. Well, almost nothing. There’s a pretty balsy statement on the DVD case, “Blends the mood, vigor and themes of 8 Mile and the perseverance and edge of Hustle and Flow with the old-school vibe of Juice”. The bolded titles are not my doing – and this film is not fit to stand on the shoulders of giants. The hip-hop film genre is diluted and polluted and these three films (among a few others) happen to represent when genuine artistry pops its head up ever so briefly. Step Off is just more of the same – so familiar in fact that it is an endurance slog, an astounding 102 minutes of every hip-hop film cliché culminating in a final battle that still manages to drag.
The idea here is solid – what if someone made a film about the beat-makers, the men and women behind the scenes...

From my inbox… the trailer for a straight-to-dvd flick titled Step Off, courtesy of the house that Tyler Perry helped keep afloat, Lionsgate. On first reading the email I thought it was yet another sequel/prequel in the trite Step Up franchise, but with something of a twist. And although it’s not, Step Off (originally called Battle - see the poster on the left) is brought to you by “an executive producer of You Got Served,” as the below trailer says, so it’s not-so far removed from that universe.
Directed by Laron Austin (his feature film debut) the movie’s synopsis reads: Set in Atlanta’s hip hop underground scene, Rippa, (Conrad Clifton) a struggling music producer, working on his latest tracks for a regional beat battle, loses everything after a robbery. While lying low, he is forced to get back to the music and prove he has real talent.

From my email inbox…
Battle is “a coming of age drama about an unknown producer who pursues his passion for composing music. He wants to produce music for the top rappers in the industry. He must find his way and his own soul for his music before he faces off at a national Beat Battle.”
According to the info I received, the film will be released in theatres March 10th.
It’s directed by Laron Austin, and stars Conrad Clifton – both relative newcomers. I don’t know much else about the project.
Trailer follows below.
