Nothing like Anne Rules' non-fiction book by the same name.
suzihands5 June 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Finished the Book this movie is based on several days ago and decided to watch the movie based on that book. I like Rob Lowe as an actor and Bart Corbin, who Rob portrays, was apparently handsome but not in Rob's league in my opinion. The movie changes several facts, the main one being that after he murdered his wife, Jennifer, he took refuge with his gullible brother, he refused to come back to the crime scene, refused to see his sons and refused to have the police investigators interview him. He did not turn up outside the house he shared with his estranged wife and his two young sons and he did not tell the police at the scene he wanted to see his sons and then they could interview him. No way did this narcissistic, poor excuse of a human being, husband and father, have those boys in his care and no way did he try to abscond with them. He was way too concerned for himself to think about anyone else in the Universe, let alone the World.

I was very disappointed with the Tele-Movie because I had read the factual book from front to back BUT if you haven't read the book or know too much about the case then by all means watch this movie and enjoy it for what it is. It is well written, well acted and a very interesting story. The son's names are changed in the Movie also, which I found odd because the books and reports name the boys quite openly.

I hope the real Bart Corbin stays in jail for the rest of his days and only leaves in a wooden box.

This movie deserves an 8 if you haven't any knowledge about the facts, only a 4 if you do.

A Good Made-For-TV Movie...
vnssyndrome8923 June 2023
TOO LATE TO SAY GOODBYE

*WARNING: ANIMAL ABUSE/DEATH AS A PLOT DEVICE (see below)

Told in semi flashback, the movie opens with Jenn Corbin's (Stefanie von Pfetten) apparent suicide. Then in retrospect, we see how Jenn and Bart Corbin (Rob Lowe) met, fell in love, had their children, and how their marriage disintegrated, due to Bart's controlling behavior.

Bart Corbin is a dentist, and his assistant Dara (Katie Griffin) is a bit snarky to his wife Jenn. Jenn thinks Bart & Dara are having an affair, so Jenn seeks solace online. She begins an internet affair with someone named Chris. He's supposed to own a plant nursery in St. Louis, but is he really what he seems?

At the same time, Bart, begins insinuating to Jenn's family she's having a breakdown. He's handsome, successful, and very convincing. Jenn pleads with her family to believe her, Bart is becoming violent, controlling and she's afraid. His outbursts are more over the top, but still, everyone is loathe to believe Jenn.

When we return to the present, Detective Ann Roche (Michelle Hurd) and Detective Sam Malveau (Marc Bendavid) work tirelessly on the case. Now, Jenn's sister, Heather (Lauren Holly) can see the truth about her brother-in-law. Heather never gives up trying to prove Bart's guilt. Her tenaciousness leads her to another 'suicide', one of Bart's college girlfriends. Heather works with police to try to get justice for both women. Will it be enough to put him behind bars?

WHAT WORKS: *Most of the performances in this TV movie are believable. The actors, Lauren Holly, Yannick Bisson, Michelle Hurd, Marc Bendavid, and of course, Rob Lowe, are a step above the usual faire, so it's more engaging.

WHAT DOESN'T WORK: *There's not enough foreshadowing about Bart's true personality. One minute, he's a great guy, the next evil. There should have been more scenes where we, the viewer, see him as Jenn sees him.

*The flashback to the '80's DOES NOT WORK! And playing Rick Astley in the back ground, and giving the girl big hair, does not convince me that 2009 Rob Lowe, is really 1987 Rob Lowe. We all know what Rob Lowe looked like in the '80's, and this is not it! It would have been better to get one of his son's to play him as a younger man, or some other look a like, because this is a FAIL.

TO RECOMMEND, OR NOT TO RECOMMEND, THAT IS THE QUESTION: *I would recommend this movie. It has a great cast, and they do a good job with made-for-tv movie material.

CLOSING NOTES: *I don't believe in trigger warnings, I think WOKE is a virus. BUT, I also don't agree with supporting movies that use animal abuse/murder as a plot point, to show a character is evil. It is lazy writing, and in most cases should be quashed. This movie does use a cat's kidnapping\disappearance at the hands of a psycho, as a plot device.

*This is a Made-For-TV movie, please keep that in mind before you watch\rate it. TV movies have a much lower budget, and so your expectations should be adjusted.

*I have no connection to the film, or production in ANY way. I am just an honest viewer, who wishes for more straight forward reviews. Hope I helped you out.

Finally -- A Dentist On The Receiving End.
rmax30482318 July 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Anne Rule is a first-rate true-crime writer, both concise and colorful, and she wrote the book this TV movie is based on. It's too bad that the people behind this movie, anxious for a buck, rush to Canada and shoot the story so carelessly for Lifetime Movies.

The story itself isn't exactly epic. A narcissistic dentist (Lowe) shoots his wife and sets it up as a suicide. The wife's sister is convinced that it was murder and eggs the local police on. (Nice performance by Michelle Hurd as the determined but straight-laced cop.) A lengthy investigation brings out the fact that one of the dentist's girl friends in college wound up dead in the same manner. Okay, Doc, open wide now.

The director, Norma Bailey, tries some original camera angles. Sometimes they work -- a couple of overhead shots that break up the predictable parade of images -- and sometimes they don't. It doesn't add much to a scene of a couple walking down a hallway and having an ordinary conversation when you tilt the camera thirty degrees. There are situations that call for such striking effects, but a chat in a hallways isn't one of them.

Rob Lowe is Rob Lowe. Everyone says he's handsome so I suppose he's handsome but there are times when I could be convinced that his character's love of self is entirely real. You know when the audience is first tipped off that there's something queer about the grieving husband? When he shows up to answer questions at the police station, says he's ready to be taken to the interrogation room, and says politely, to nobody in particular, "Coffee black, no cream," and one of the detectives stares after him, stupefied. And he insists on being addressed as "doctor," whereas most non-MDs get that behind them when they're out of their professional settings.

When I think of all the pain inflicted on me over the years by those sadists in white coats -- you know the patter, "This may sting a little," and "I'm going to have to be a bad boy now," -- I was glad to see him convicted. You hear me? -- GLAD! I hope that prison has a dentist who is a ham-handed oaf at his job and who suffers from a perpetual hangover. Immanent justice. It was good enough for Aristotle.

Good story and acting, the worst photography in movie ever!
tixithewild29 March 2016
Really good story with good acting, but the photography of the movie is so bad that it killed my concentration. Angles are so wrong, and imbalanced, shifted point of perspective, most of the time when characters are talking you can see only half of their faces with the rest of the screen completely empty and blurred. Lightning is also very bad under the direct sunlight with harsh shadows. I mean the noon sun is either behind their faces or from the side and you only see half of the face. Very distracting, and also, in almost every scene there must be something blurry in foreground that takes over half of the screen! So annoying! Who ever was behind the camera was either amateur or experimenting. This killed the movie for me, which sadly has such a great story.

Well played, exciting crime drama, don't believe low rating
OJT16 February 2013
I was caught up watching this right away, reading on the screen this was a true story, which immediately takes off with a neighbor opening th front door after a knock one late night, finding the neighboring kid with bare feet covered in blood. The blood is from the mother, which seems to have shot herself. Then the film tells both the continuation of the effect this has on the relatives and friends, as we also neatly are told in retrospect what happened up to the tragic event of finding her shot on the bed.

The film is very good hand work, and the acting is excellent, especially from Rob Lowe, playing the dentist husband Bart Corbin is excellent. No wonder his career is back on track. This shows his acting skills. Stephanie von Pfetten, which plays the dead woman which we also get to know retrospectively does great. Her sister is played by Lauren Holley, also doing that role great. We're neatly introduced to the fact of a family not functioning, with the parents blaming each other.

The good hand work is showed in the film's pace, the storytelling and even in the narration and music. We also find the story building up suspension about what happened up to her death, where several is involved. The sister believes Bart killed her. And a female detective, played by Michele Hurd, is doing a great investigative job. We follow the investigation in an interesting way, unveiling the story.

When I went to rate this on IMDb I was really baffled by the low score. I expected this to have a rating of 6 or 7, but 4,8??? I really think the ratings here tend to be very right, but this is an exception of the rule. I think this might be due to no dramatic ending. Well, this is a drama, not a fictional crime story. Well, it's far better than this rating in all aspects, and is well worth a watch. A good TV- movie about a true story.

Bored to death
cranbery382 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
How likely is it that the family member is the one that uncovers the fact that the husband previously had a wife that died in identical circumstances ?(NONE!).

How likely is it that the detective is the one that simulates a blood spatter instead of using a trained expert ?(NONE!).

How likely is it that the detective is the one to call a press conference and not say the chief of police or the district attorney? (NONE!).

And finally, what was the point of of the scene at the end where he smirks at the sister and implies he's going to try to make one juror like him only to just plead guilty? No need to go into all the other parts that make this pure drivel. I only gave it a 2 because of Rob. How does he still look the same as he did 25 years ago? Now that would be interesting to know.

TV movie with 1 or 2 higher quality actors....
herrick41619 September 2021
Agree that Rob Lowe shows his talent in this and it was for this that the movie was watchable. And Jenn his wife-unlike the balance of the cast whose over-acting made a cliché of a script that much harder to stand, her underplay was refreshing and a respectful reminder that this happened. The lack of skill in a dialogue that balanced boredom with cringe-worthy nonsense and lack of skill in acting it out would have been unwatchable without the two leads- a disservice to the real people who survived the loss and so senseless and selfish.

On the author I see most readers rave about (Ann Rule) I've never understood why. Nonfiction isn't easy nor a gift like Truman Capote's expected again but Jack Olsen, Tom Henderson, Kevin Sullivan-my opinion only-I wish there were more true crime writers like them.

Too late to turn it off........
FlashCallahan9 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Rob Lowe tars in a movie of the week thriller......

Bart Corbin's wife Jenn dies at home, apparently suicide, as the police believe.

While he and his children moves in with his brother Bobby, his wife's sister Heather starts a relentless campaign, without any clue, to make the police believe Bart must have murdered her and have an affair with practice secretary Dara.

However PC data shows Jenn was the one who has an Internet affair with a Chris, who turned out to be a lesbian's alias.

I don't mean to sound big headed, but if you do not know the outcome of this film in the first twenty minutes, and the fact that the cover art of the DVD shouts spoiler, you really need to stop watching films, as this is blindingly obvious from the get go.

Lowe goes from charming to evil in 0 to 120mph, and other than wearing a sign above his head saying 'It was me', the rest of the cast think there maybe something wrong with him, but he's so smooth with it, he just slides away from all the alarm bells calling.

But knowing the outcome so early in the film, makes it more of a comedy, as we see Lowe morph into this strange psycho-lite dentist. Instead of becoming more menacing, he gets more of a puppy dog look as the film progresses, and in doing this, he surprisingly becomes more of a protagonist than an antagonistic.

Which makes it a really curious watch.

With its movie of the week sheen, this narcissistic thriller has a daytime soap feel to it, which makes it all the more hilarious.

Black Bart Rides Again
lavatch1 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
"Too Late to Say Goodbye" was a competently made true life film. The story is a sad one based on the case study of the dentist, Barton T. Corbin. Bart was everybody's favorite, a family man who could ooze charm and attract an elitist clientele. But he also led a secret life of insecurity, jealousy, and the ever-present potential for murder.

The arc of development of the film is the assembly of enough evidence to convict Bart of the murder of his wife, Jennifer Monique Barber Corbin. The relentless Detective Roche is ably assisted by Heather, the sister of Jenn. It is Heather who first suspects Bart of having killed her beloved sister. It is Heather who first uncovers evidence pointing to Bart having killed his first wife, the young dental student named Dorothy "Dotty" Carlyle Hearn.

One of the most arresting developments in the film occurred in the flashback sequences. It turns out that Jenn herself was not a saint. When she became tired of the overbearing Bart, Jenn took to the internet where she became obsessed with a user named Chris. But unbeknownst to the hapless Jenn, it turned out that "Chris" was a woman named Marion Barnes, who had become obsessed with Jenn! It was a credit to the filmmakers that the mix-ups between Jenn and Chris/Marion did not lapse into comedy.

The performances were solid in this fairly routine, predictable, and formulaic film. There was good intensity from the actress playing Detective Roche, who became a worthy adversary to Bart in a cat-and-mouse game. Bart was a good dad to his little boys, Tayler and Trevor. But one of the kids witnessed Bart's abusive treatment of Jenn, and the little kid was often depicted cowering in fear.

The trial scene was especially sad as the grieving family members confronted Bart in court. Jenn's parents, Max and Lilliane, rose to confront him. But it was Heather who delivered the excoriating monologue about the double homicide committed by her brother-in-law. Then, Bart is whisked off to spend two consecutive life terms in the Forest Hays, Jr. State Prison in Georgia. R. I. P, Jenn and Dotty.

Whenever i see rob lowes name in the credits i know i will see the smug, conceited, arrogant horses ass he has always been...in this film he is dentist, not a doctor and from the onset you knew he was guilty of killing his wife, due to the reactions of his children... but will he get away with it ?

Too Late to Say Goodbye; Never too late to get Justice ***
edwagreen1 March 2010
Warning: Spoilers
The dentist who had everything except the fact that he couldn't take rejection. Rob Lowe plays this type of guy to the hilt in the true story.

His frustrated wife begins an online relationship with a guy named Chris from St. Louis. Imagine, her surprise, when it turns out that Chris is actually a lesbian who has been looking for a relationship since her last one broke up.

The movie is intriguing. Did the dentists wife kill herself as it first appeared or was there foul play? The picture wobbles when it's determined that while in college, the good dentist had a girlfriend who allegedly killed herself as well. We've seen this pattern before in films.

We also have Lauren Holly, the victim's sister who suspects her brother-in-law from the start. Nothing new here as well except for the fact that the film is admirably done.

Simple but enjoyable
rtmackenzie2 March 2022
The acting is all sound good, the story line is interesting, the cinematography is pretty bleh and they do the worst job ever of un-aging Rob Lowe for a flashback, but overall yeah I enjoyed it.

Boring and uninspired mess
nickhunter-5139031 October 2021
The only redeeming thing in this movie is that it's based off a true story. Rob Lowe does his best, but the whole movie really is just moving from one scene to the next. The writing isn't awful, but most of the other actors are just ok at best. Really just a super boring movie with little to no reason to spend time watching it.

Beware low average rating!
jczoerner4 February 2011
This is an engaging movie... not the best, but certainly watchable. What makes this movie remarkable, however, is Rob Lowe's stellar performance. I mean, this guy is on fire! I've seen him in a few things and have never given him much that much thought, but that he could turn in such a world class performance in what is essentially a throw-away (although certainly decent) movie is a testament to what an incredible talent he must be. I am not joking. He is really good in this... he had me laughing out loud several times, not because he was funny but simply because I was in awe of how well he delivered this or that line. Just as "Batman: The Dark Knight" wasn't that good a movie but was elevated by Heath Ledger's performance, so is this TV movie elevated into true art by the solid acting performances, especially Lowe's. Recommended!
