This production comes from Paris and is set more or less in the present. Katerina hasn't managed to produce a child after five years of marriage, as her father in law complains. This sets in motion a stream of violent events over the three hours of the opera. I can't recall seeing so many graphic sex acts on an operatic stage; I guess we're living in very liberated times. Ausrine Stundyte is stunning as Katerina, Pavel Cernoch gives her fine support as her lover Sergey. The score presents no challenges for the very capable orchestra and its conductor Ingo Metzmacher.
