The ending of Nefarious, a new horror movie released in 2023, leaves fans wondering what the true meaning of the film truly was.
The film centers on a psychiatrist assigned to analyze a convicted death row inmate believed to be faking demonic possession to avoid his sentence, all taking place in prison.
The independent scare-fest failed to impress critics, averaging a 33% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes. But although it only grossed $5.4 million at the global box office (per Box Office Mojo), it earned an Audience Score of 96% from Rotten Tomatoes.

Naming horror movies is a serious business. It needs to sound scary, it shouldn’t give too much away, ideally it shouldn’t be named the same as someone else’s film, but it should also be memorable enough to stick in the brain. So unsurprisingly a lot of horror filmmakers have opted to call their movie “scary sounding adjective”.
But which word is scariest? We have ranked the movies based entirely on how alarming our perception of the adjective is. Come at us in the comments.
7. Ominous
Rain clouds can be ominous. Your boss saying “can I borrow you for a minute” can be ominous.
But to describe your child dying in an accident and a mysterious stranger offering to bring him back to life as “Ominous” feels like a bit of an understatement. That’s the plot of this film from 2015 by Peter Sullivan, which sounds like it...

Franchises in theaters are showing their age, but they’re a sure bet at home. This week’s VOD charts have “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” (Paramount) and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” (Disney), both $19.99, battling for top spot. The Hasbro action film is #1 at Vudu and iTunes, while the latest Marvel entry remains #1 at GooglePlay.
Meantime, Wes Anderson’s “Asteroid City” (Focus), released at $19.99 after its fourth weekend, is fourth or fifth on all three lists. It is behind “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” the year’s biggest domestic hit, now at $5.99 and ranks third everywhere. The top three films all grossed between $150 million and $575 million; “Asteroid” is not yet at $30 million. Anderson’s $25 million budget, a fraction of its competitors’, suggests a lucrative haul for Focus.
Only 13 titles made the charts, with eight on all three. The still-pvod “Fast X” (Universal) and standard-price “Sisu” and “John Wick: Chapter 4...

Three VOD charts and Netflix’s top 10 all resulted in films set in non-Earth planetary worlds leading the pack in home viewing. “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” (Disney) is #1 on VOD (at $19.99) at iTunes, Google Play, and Vudu, while “65,” four months after its theatrical release and multiple weeks scoring on VOD, tops Netflix’s movie chart.
“Galaxy” had a two-month window, as Disney increasingly slows down its initial home releases (“Avatar: The Way of Water” waited 100 days), and then to PVOD, not streaming. It was dominant enough that it led Vudu’s revenue-based list, even though it was only available for three of the seven days of their full-week rankings.

On the VOD charts, action rules. A recent price drop to $5.99 has propelled “John Wick: Chapter 4” (Lionsgate) to continued #1 positions at iTunes and Google Play, while revenue-ranking Vudu kept “Fast X” (Universal) in the top position. “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” (Universal), price now reduced to $19.99 (including download) placed #2 at all three sites.
New entry “The Machine” (Sony), an action comedy starring Bert Kreischer, here adapting his semi-biographical stand-up routine, is #3 at Vudu at $19.99 while placing on a three charts. It hit home viewing after its fourth weekend in theaters, where it managed only $10 million in gross.
After a recent spate of theatrical releases dominating Netflix’s top ten movie chart, their home-grown titles took six of the slots this week. “Extraction 2” repeats at #1, with their usual eclectic mix taking other slots.

After three weeks of PVOD play, “John Wick: Chapter 4” (now $5.99) returns to #1 on two of the three leading top ten charts with the lower price. Lionsgate delayed home availability for an unusual two months for this hit theatrical release, thus making an earlier than usual reduction of price unsurprising. Nor is its return to #1 unexpected.
Vudu continues with the latest “Fast and Furious” franchise release — “Fast X” — at #1. It fell to #3 at iTunes, while almost certainly an error has resulted in it being nowhere currently on Google Play’s chart (it was #1 as recently as Saturday).
The appeal of action titles is also shown at both Netflix and elsewhere on the VOD charts. Netflix’s original film “Extraction 2” with Chris Hemsworth (and an added Idris Elba) is #1 there, with its 2020 predecessor #3. “Kandahar” (Open Road) with Gerard Butler in an Afghanistan rescue story, which grossed under $5 million in theaters...

New York based actor, producer, filmmaker and former Capetonian – Stelio Savante – has joined thousands of South Africans in celebrating the South African Supreme Court’s ruling on citizenship. The court summary declared that it was constitutionally invalid for South Africans to lose their citizenship when acquiring those from other nations. The ruling comes after the Democratic Alliance (Da) appealed a high court order that originally dismissed the party’s application that the legislation was inconsistent with the South African constitution. However this new ruling reinstated Sa citizenship for all those who lost it.

Savante – who has 135 international credits to his name – described the elation that he and other South Africans were experiencing – “I gratefully wake to celebrate with the tens of thousands of fellow South Africans who’d unnecessarily and inadvertently been deprived of their citizenship courtesy of a flawed and contradictory law that violated international human rights.

Universal executives last week made a statement about how lucrative early PVOD availability has been for the studio. Then on Friday, they made a statement suggesting how accepted the practice has become.
“Fast X,” with an investment approaching $500 million in production and marketing costs, became available on domestic platforms for $19.99 rental ($24.99 purchase). That was 22 days after it debuted in theaters, and grossed $67 million its opening weekend.
Hold on there — wasn’t the oft-repeated understanding that any Universal film that opened over $50 million had at least a 31 day window? This was widely reported when the studio came to an understanding with major exhibitors in 2020 (which included the latter having some participation in the revenue).
That has consistently been the minimum case over the past three years. And recently “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” an even bigger grossing film, had a 41 day window, 10 days longer than normal.
Neither Universal nor exhibition sources would comment on this.

God made man in his own image, and then man defied His orders, so man was cast out from His garden—or so the story goes in the Bible. Directors Chuck Konzelman and Cary Solomon made a movie based on this, and it’s the 2023 supernatural horror Nefarious. Jordan Belfi plays psychiatrist Dr. James Martin, who goes into a prison to decide whether a criminal (Sean Patrick Flannery) is mentally fit to be executed, but realizes he’s gotten much more than he bargained for. Shot almost entirely inside one room, the movie raises questions about man’s choices and actions with references to heaven and hell, but it quickly starts reeking of propaganda and not so much horror. Here’s what happens in Nefarious.

Get ready for a continuation of the recurrent rotation between “The Super-Mario Bros.” (Universal) and “John Wick: Chapter 4” (Lionsgate) as #1 and #2 on PVOD charts. Both films (each priced at $19.99) will likely add two more weeks minimum back and forth atop the lists after a similar battle the last two.
Netflix meantime has about as top-heavy a list of older theatrical releases, with only one original making their top 10 (in tenth place). Of note there — “To Leslie,” virtually unknown before Andrea Riseborough’s surprise Oscar Best Actress nomination, initially reached #1 before dropping to a still notable #2 (behind the 2013 comedy “We’re the Millers”).
“John Wick” kept “Smb” from a second week at #1 when it was released. But this week, “Smb,” by far the biggest domestic theatrical hit for 2023 so far, returned to #1 at both iTunes and Vudu. “John Wick” still leads at Google Play, but that site usually lags for a few days,...

The Sony biopic out this Friday offers a different George. “I want to spread the word of God,” says Foreman (Khris Davis) in the trailer for “Big George Foreman: The Miraculous Story of the Once and Future Heavyweight Champion of the World.”
It’s a production from faith-based Sony Pictures’ label Affirm Films. Its first film in 2008, “Fireproof” starring Kirk Cameron, grossed $33 million on a $500,000 budget. To date, the (mostly domestic) global theatrical gross for Affirm titles stands at $520 million — $400 million more than the films’ total production costs.
Directed by George Tillman Jr. and with Oscar-winner Forest Whitaker in a supporting role, “Foreman” may represent the biggest Affirm budget to date. (One source lists it at $34 million.) Prior Affirm budgets topped out at $20 million. It’s also got one of Affirm’s biggest releases, with 2,575 theaters.
Opening prospects are unclear.

If you’ve been craving a new horror flick replete with political commentary, “Nefarious” might be the movie for you. The film, which features “Boondock Saints” star Sean Patrick Flannery as well as an appearance by conservative talking-head and conspiracy theorist Glenn Beck, saw its theatrical debut on Friday, April 14.
“Nefarious” features Flannery as a convicted serial killer named Edward. During his psychiatric evaluation, Edward claims to be a demon, and that the psychiatrist interviewing him will commit three murders of his own before their time together has concluded.
Reviews for the film have been less than kind, as it currently sits at 33% on the review aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes. But 96% of audiences who have seen the movie gave it a thumbs up, suggesting there’s more to “Nefarious” than meets the eye.

Nefarious tells the tale of a convicted serial killer waiting on the day of his execution. On that day he has a last minute, court-ordered psychiatric evaluation. The doctor then needs to decide if this man is who he claims to be – a demon, Nefarious, who quite happily wants the execution to go ahead.
Much of the movie, possibly about 70% of it, is just the serial killer, played by Sean Patrick Flanery and the doctor (James Martin), played by Jordan Belfi, talking to each other across a table in an otherwise empty room. It’s a battle of wits and character, as the doctor believes he can’t be fooled into calling this man crazy, until he’s not...

For the third week in a row, The Super Mario Bros. Movie held the top spot of the box-office weekend by a significant margin. This weekend, it bested the second-place film by $34.7 million.
Adding $58.2 million over the weekend, The Super Mario Bros. Movie brought its three-week total to $434.3 million. Meanwhile, debuting in a distant second place was Evil Dead Rise with $23.5 million. In an even further third-place finish was newcomer The Covenant which debuted with $6.3 million over the weekend. These two debuts pushed John Wick: Chapter 4 from third to fourth place this weekend where it added $5.8 million to bring its five-week total to $168.9 million. Climbing a spot and re-entering the top five was Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves with $5.4 million. This resulted in the film’s overall four-week tally reaching $82.2 million.
Air dropped a spot to finish in sixth-place this weekend with $4.9 million, giving it a three-week total of $41.3 million.

With a stunning second weekend total of $87 million, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” (Universal) justifies the case for its potential to become 2023’s top domestic release. The Illumination Animation adaptation of the Nintendo game fell only 41 percent, exceeding even the most generous estimates for its hold.
With $348 million already in for its first 12 days and its strong hold suggesting vast public interest and repeat viewings, “Super Mario Bros.” looks primed for at least a $600 million total. That would be a domestic take exceeded only by “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Avatar: The Way of Water” last year — and a level not assumed for any number of potentially strong upcoming releases, particularly with Marvel titles still strong but below past levels. Worldwide, it is already as $678 million.

Box office: ‘Super Mario Bros’ crosses $300 million, wins 2nd weekend as everything else disappoints
It was a disappointing weekend at the box office for all but one mega-blockbuster hit, Universal and Nintendo’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which didn’t crash and burn after its record-setting $200 million opening week as expected. Instead, it becomes the first movie of 2023 to make more than $300 million, and it crossed that milestone in less than two weeks.
The video game adaptation featuring the voices of Chris Pratt, Charlie Day, Anya Taylor-Joy, Seth Rogen, and more, made $22.6 million in its second Friday, down 62% from Good Friday, but as with most family films, business picked up on Saturday for Universal to report a second weekend of $87 million (estimated). That is the highest second weekend for any animated film, including those from Illumination Entertainment, surpassing the $85 million second weekend of Disney’s “Frozen 2.” It has now grossed $347.8 million domestically.

When studio projections were first announced for The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s opening last week, the animated film was only expected to do about $87 million for the weekend. By Saturday that number had ballooned to $137 million, when final numbers were reported The Super Mario Bros. Movie had amassed $146.3 million. This weekend is seeing a similar progression for the plumbing brothers. By Saturday morning the hit film was expected to pull in $58 million for the weekend, by Saturday night that number hit $72 million and today The Super Mario Bros. Movie settles in on a $87 million second weekend representing the best second weekend ever for an animated film. I must toot my horn here as I predicted a second week in this range.
That number takes down the Frozen II’s $85.9 million and represents just a 41% decline. The films domestic cume is impressive enough, but its international numbers are really quite...

Beau Is Afraid posted the top per-screen average of the year so far and the best limited opening for distributor A24 since Uncut Gems, grossing an estimated $320,396 at four locations in New York and LA for a hefty per-screen average of $80K+ in sold-out shows on both coasts. (Uncut Gems with Adam Sandler had a $105k PSA on five screens in 2019 — a limited-opening record at the time.)

"He got in your head, didn't he?" Believe Entertainment has unveiled an official trailer for Nefarious, a wonky psychological thriller opening in select theaters this spring. This is actually strangely another religious propaganda film made by the guys behind films like The Book of Daniel, God's Not Dead 1 & 2, and Do You Believe? - an important detail to point out. But it's still an interesting premise, as long as you can look past the ulterior motives. On the day of his scheduled execution, a convicted serial killer gets a psychiatric evaluation during which he claims he is a demon, then further claims that before their time is over, the psychiatrist will commit three murders of his own. Starring Sean Patrick Flanery, Jordan Belfi, James Healy Jr., Eric Hanson, and Stelio Savante. They're good about covering up the religious aspects, but this seems to be all about "you cannot say his name...
