The Stockholm syndrome

Warning: Spoilers
As the series begins, we watch Jonathan standing outside his apartment watching the movers take all of Suzanne's possessions into the truck. The moving company, Moishe's, strikes Jonathan as a funny name for that kind of enterprise. He remarks to the driver he didn't think Jews would be in that type of business, to which, the man asks him whether he is another self-hating New York Jew. He watches as Suzanne goes away with the movers.

Now alone in an empty apartment, Jonathan doesn't know what to do with himself. He picks up a paperback, Raymond Chandler's "Forever My Lovely", and can't put the book down. Suddenly, Jonathan gets an inspiration to go to Craig's List to offer himself as a private investigator, mentioning in his ad, he is not fully licensed. It doesn't take long before he receives a phone call from a girl who is looking for her sister that has mysteriously disappeared. Jonathan promises he will look into it.

Jonathan, meets his friend Ray to tell him about his break with Suzanne. Over coffee, Ray also has his own problems to share. His girlfriend Leah, a single mother, has asked him to babysit her children, and he left them alone in their house. Leah wants nothing to do with him.

George, the editor of the magazine where Jonathan works, has invited him to a party. George wants to see if his friend can bring him some pot. When they meet, George is surprised to see his friend has stashed the 'grass' inside one of his own empty Viagra prescription bottle! Jonathan gets sidetracked and arrives late at the affair where he is supposed to take notes for an article with opinion of the guests of the event. George's assistant tells Jonathan he missed all the A List celebrities and there's no one worth interviewing now.

Jonathan follows his intuition and calls someone to find out about the English boyfriend of the kidnapped girl. He is told by a bartender the guy can be found at a nearby hotel. Jonathan has to bribe the desk clerk , hoping he can find the missing girl. He gets lucky finally and breaks into the room where the young woman is tied to the bed and gagged. The fellow tells Jonathan he wanted to create a sort of "Stockholm Syndrome" so that the girl began to feel love for her kidnapper.

A witty beginning of this surprisingly excellent series created by Jonathan Ames. This chapter was directed by Alan Taylor who gets good acting from his three principals, and the guest cast. Jason Schwartzmann, who is the author's alter ego, does a good job with his take on this neurotic man who sees his love life suddenly die. Zack Galifianakis plays Ray, Jonathan's best friend. Ted Danson, a welcome addition to any series, appears as George.

"Bored to Death" takes another view at a group of troubled New Yorkers that appear to gravitate toward each other in search of friendship and perhaps happiness they only can find with similar souls. Mr. Ames is to be congratulated for the creation of the series.

Boring Rip-Off of Woody Allen
Johnny_West31 July 2021
Jonathan Schwartzman reads all his lines in slow motion, as if he was hearing them read to him on an ear-bud. His stilted and boring homage to Woody Allen is way lame and just horrible. Thankfully, my constipation was cured.
