The past few weeks have been great for music. With new releases from Ariana Grande, Beyoncé and more, the charts truly feel like they are alive again. Among these big releases, one of the most buzzed about has been the alliance between hip-hop superstar producer Metro Boomin and veteran rapper Future on their album “We Don’t Trust You.” It has been a huge success, debuting atop the Billboard 200 with over 250,000 equivalent album units and multiple songs in the top 10 of that week’s Billboard Hot 100, most notably the single “Like That” with Kendrick Lamar at number-one. Future and Metro’s success might translate to some Grammy prizes in 2025 too.

There were a few major new music releases on March 22, including Shakira‘s “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran,” Tyla‘s self-titled debut album and Gary Clark Jr.‘s “Jpeg Raw.” But it’s Metro Boomin and Future‘s collaboration “We Don’t Trust You” that most Gold Derby users bet on to be number-one on the Billboard 200 albums chart for the tracking week of March 22 through March 28 when that chart is revealed next week.

In 2023 Gold Derby’s racetrack odds missed every general field category — surprises abounded! But this year our odds were spot-on in all four of those races, with Album of the Year going to Taylor Swift (“Midnights”), Record of the Year going to Miley Cyrus (“Flowers”), Song of the Year going to Billie Eilish (“What Was I Made For?”) and Best New Artist going to Victoria Monet. Still, there were 15 categories out of the 37 we were predicting where most of our users were expecting a different result. Did you see these outcomes coming?

Taylor Swift is the odds-on favorite to make history with an Album of the Year victory for “Midnights.” It would be her fourth win in the category following victories for “Fearless,” “1989” and “Folklore.” That would set a new record for the most Album of the Year wins for any recording artist ever, breaking Swift’s tie with Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder and Paul Simon. Out of the album categories at the upcoming Grammys, the race for Best Rap Album is one of the hardest to predict. It’s a lineup where every album has a big advantage and a big question mark looming over it. It might be the only album lineup this year where a case could be made for each of the five nominees. Whether that speaks to the albums being great or to how bad this year was for hip-hop, I’ll let you be the judge.
The presumed frontrunner is Drake and 21 Savage’s “Her Loss,” which earned nominations all across the rap field. The album is arguably the most successful here; it was the number-four album of 2023 according to Billboard. It’s also led by the singles “Rich Flex” and “Spin Bout U,” which are both nominated and both urban radio chart-toppers. All of that could be enough to...

Producer Metro Boomin Says ‘Spider-Verse’ Song ‘Am I Dreaming’ Started with a ‘Grand Champion’ Sound
When “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” was first recruiting artists for its soundtrack, Metro Boomin was not yet offered the role of executive producer on the album. “The original plan was to have me contribute a few songs or something for the movie, and the chemistry between everybody in the team just ended up being so great,” the current Grammy nominee for Producer of the Year, Non-Classical said to IndieWire over Zoom. Then, in December 2022, he released his latest album “Heroes and Villains,” which was not only on theme, but debuted at No.1 on the Billboard 200, and went on to become the best-selling rap album of 2023. The opportunity to have a much higher stake in making music for the sequel to the Oscar-winning animated superhero movie soon followed, with the greenlight for Metro to also release the soundtrack under his own label. “The timing couldn’t have been better.”

Do you ever remember the old conduct of your adventure books that used to be so popular? You know, the ones where you select an option and have to go-to another page to continue the story. Watching “Dr Wai” brings back those memories given the wrap around narrative. Throw in a blatant nod to Indiana Jones and there is a lot of nostalgia at play. Continuing with the reviews of Eureka Entertainment's release of the “Heroes and Villains” Jet Li box set, it's time to dig out the explorer's hat, select follow-this-adventure and see if this feature is a lost treasure or deserves to be lost in the midst of time.

1998, one year into the handover of Hong Kong to China and action cinema was beginning to shift. “The Storm Riders” was the first to really demonstrate CGI enhanced action. Jackie Chan was balancing Hollywood and Hong Kong and Jet Li was about to launch himself onto a wider audience as the villain in “Lethal Weapon 4”. With that in mind, he had one more vehicle for his local fanbase that year in “Hitman”. As Eureka Entertainment re-release it as part of their “Heroes and Villains” box set, it provides an opportunity to go back to revisit a work that has gotten a bit lost in the mix over the years.

Morgan Wallen‘s run at number-one on the Billboard 200 with his album “One Thing at a Time” may not be over yet, but it has been interrupted. For the tracking week that ended July 6, Lil Uzi Vert had the chart-topping set. Their “Pink Tape” debuted in the lead position with 167,000 equivalent album units based on its combined album sales, individual track sales, and online streams. Read more about this week’s chart here at Billboard.com.

After a relatively dry year for rap music on the charts, it seems like the genre is back on track. This is largely thanks to the release of Lil Uzi Vert’s newest studio album, “Pink Tape.” The record is headed for a number-one debut on the Billboard 200, with projected album units between 200,000 and 250,000. Thus, Uzi is pretty much this year’s first hip-hop smash and continues to be one of the most innovative and popular rappers of the past 10 years. Could this success lead to their first Grammy win?
“Pink Tape” has a lot in its favor. First, as mentioned above, it’s pretty much the biggest rap album released in 2023, and second only to Drake and 21 Savage’s 2022 release “Her Loss” for the most first-week album units throughout the Grammy eligibility period. However, “Her Loss” had mediocre reviews, and most of its tracks faded relatively fast compared...

It’s a slow year for hip-hop so far, especially on the charts. Big names like J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar, Cardi B, and Jay-Z haven’t released new music in 2023, other icons like Nicki Minaj seem to be prepping for Q4 releases, and so far there’s just not been a lot of hip-hop topping the charts. In fact, no number-one song this year has been by a hip-hop artist. Even worse, there has not even been a number-one album by a rapper this year either, with releases from high-profile names like Gunna and Lil Durk failing to reach the top spot. The silver lining is that a weak year for rap overall means that the Grammys’ rap categories might be more fun than ever, with no boring sweeps or predictably locked categories in sight.

Dennis Wilson, the only surfer in the group, passed away on December 28, 1983. Carl Wilson, the youngest brother, died of lung cancer on February 6, 1998.

R&b star Sza spent her 10th week at number-one on the Billboard 200 albums chart for the tracking week that ended on February 23. Her album “Sos” continues its historic run on the chart, this time holding off the debut of Pink‘s new album “Trustfall.” Read more about this week’s chart here at Billboard.com.

“Sos” achieved 87,000 equivalent album units based on its combined record sales, individual track sales, and online streams. That’s down just seven-percent week to week. It’s now one of just eight albums since 2010 to spend 10 weeks or more on top. And it’s the first R&b album since the “Bodyguard” soundtrack (1992-1993) to do so. That number was enough to keep “Trustfall” down at number-two. That new album launched with 74,500 album units, most of which came from traditional album sales. It’s Pink’s ninth album...

What more can be said about Sza‘s dominance of the Billboard 200 albums chart? Her “Sos” holds on to the top spot for the ninth nonconsecutive week for the tracking week that ended on February 16. That means it has spend nine of its first 10 weeks of release on the chart at number-one. Read more about this week’s chart here at Billboard.com.
“Sos” dipped seven-percent to 93,000 equivalent album units based on the combination of its traditional sales, individual track sales, and online streams. But that was still enough for it to become the first R&b album by a woman to spend nine weeks or more at number-one since Mariah Carey‘s self-title debut album spent 11 straight weeks in the lead position more than 30 years ago.

You can’t keep Sza down for long. After dropping to number-two last week on the Billboard 200 albums chart, her “Sos” has reclaimed the top spot for an eighth nonconsecutive week for the tracking week that ended February 9. Read more about this week’s chart here at Billboard.com.
The K-pop band Tomorrow X Together occupied the top spot last week with their album “The Name Chapter: Temptation,” but they couldn’t hold on to it. Instead, Sza reclaimed the throne with 100,000 equivalent album units based on her combined record sales, individual track sales, and online streams. That’s actually up slightly from last week. Thanks to blockbuster streaming numbers, “Sos” has achieved six-figure units for nine weeks now. After seven weeks of uninterrupted chart dominance, Sza was knocked down a peg on the Billboard 200 albums chart for the tracking week that ended February 2. Her “Sos” fell to number-two while the number-one position was taken over by K-pop band Tomorrow X Together, whose five-song collection “The Name Chapter: Temptation” becomes their first ever chart-topper. Read more about this week’s chart at Billboard.com.
“Temptation” reached the top spot with 161,500 equivalent album units, which are calculated by combining traditional album sales, individual track sales, and online streaming performance. Traditional sales were the lion’s share of units for the collection, and most of those came from CD sales. This is the third time the group has been in the top 10. They reached number-four with “Minisode 2: Thursday’s Child” in 2022, and “The Chaos Chapter: Freeze” hit number-five in 2021. So they’d been steadily inching their way up the chart with each successive release.

Sza continues to show remarkable staying power atop the Billboard 200 albums chart. Her sophomore album “Sos” is number-one for the sixth week in a row, continuing a milestone run for women and for R&b. Read more about this week’s chart here at Billboard.com.
“Sos” dominated the list for the tracking week that ended January 19. It achieved 119,000 equivalent album units based on its combined record sales, individual track sales, and online streaming performance. That’s down just four-percent from week to week thanks to the album’s stellar streaming numbers, which account for almost all of the album’s units. Some viewers might have assumed that Carol Kaye, the legendary studio bassist who was part of the so-called Wrecking Crew in the 1960s, would be flattered by having a character loosely modeled on her, “Carole Keen,” introduced in the latest season of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” Noting that the real-life Kaye is now 84, Esquire praised the homage and wrote, “Hopefully she’s binging ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ Season Three proudly, along with the rest of us.”
Well, no. Anyone who knows Kaye’s history of taking issue with documentaries that involve her knew that she probably wouldn’t suffer a fictional portrayal any more lightly. And indeed that has turned out to be the case, as Kaye has vented about “Mrs. Maisel” in an interview with the New York Post.

Can someone please get Ruby Rose a tissue? And actually, can you grab us one too, because the “Orange Is the New Black” alum’s story about being cast as The CW’s Batwoman is just too sweet.
Rose told Jimmy Fallon the story when she stopped by “The Tonight Show” Wednesday night, just a few days after landing the role — which also happens to be the first lesbian superhero introduced into the DC Extended Universe. It’s an emotional milestone for the out actress, who has been preparing for this part — unknowingly — since she was a kid.

On Friday, The CW released a trailer for all of it’s DC superhero-centric shows during San Diego Comic-Con 2018. Yes, a two-minute, 16-second teaser for the upcoming seasons of “Arrow,” “The Flash,” “Supergirl,” “Legends of Tomorrow” and “Black Lightning.”
The mashup even manages to fit in the upcoming “Batwoman” series, though we don’t actually get to see the titular character just yet. No, that big casting news is still to come before the character is introduced during the CW’s annual DC crossover event this December. But we do see Melissa Benoist’s Supergirl ask a stranger off camera at the very end, “I thought masks were only big in that other city. You gonna tell me who you are?” So, yeah, Batwoman is in the house.

It's looking even more likely that Marvel's Inhumans TV show will be cancelled by ABC. Above and beyond floundering in the bottom of the ratings' barrel, it seems like word of the cancellation could be leaking to the larger ABC-Marvel television family. During last weekend's Heroes and Villains Fan Fest San Jose panel, Marvel's Agents of Shield star Ming-Na reportedly almost used the word "cancelled," when answering a fan's question about potential crossovers between the ABC TV series. An ABC series set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Marvel’s Inhumans stars Anson Mount, Iwan Rheon, Serinda Swan, Eme Ikwuakor, Isabelle Cornish, Ken Leung, Ellen Woglom, Sonya Balmores, and Mike Moh. Created by Scott Buck and based on the Marvel Comics by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Marvel’s Inhumans explores the Inhumans’ Royal Family. Even though Greg Berlanti and company have crafted quite the interconnected DC Universe over on The CW, there are still some big names that have yet to put in appearances. And as awesome as those fall crossovers tend to be, it’s hard to imagine a DC Universe existing without certain characters – like Batman, for one.
Obviously, a lot of this has to do with the fact that there’s some red tape separating the film and television divisions at Warner Bros., but we’ve seen the suits become more liberal when it comes to spreading the wealth these days. Still, that hasn’t stopped Arrow from making use of major Batman villains over the years, with the likes of Ra’s al Ghul, Talia al Ghul and Anarky being but a few of them.
Given all that, it still came as quite the shock when Oliver Queen deflected public...

Long before Star-Lord and the gang became household names, the Guardians of the Galaxy were very much the outliers of Marvel’s superhero universe. And rightly so, what with the sentient tree and wise-cracking raccoon.
But because James Gunn and his team wholeheartedly embraced this underdog title, audiences were floored by the end product, which itself was a heartfelt and downright hilarious space opera of highs, lows, and animated saplings. Trying to capture lightning in a bottle twice is always difficult, as evidenced by the reviews for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but when it comes to the DC Extended Universe, lead star Zachary Levi believes Shazam! can channel that same magic in due time.
Having signed on to play the souped-up Billy Batson – other cast members include Grace Fulton, Mark Strong (Dr. Sivana) and Asher Angel as the young Billy – Levi is now preparing to step before the cameras early next year.

During its first five seasons, something you’d expect to see in each and every premiere of Arrow was that of the first of many flashbacks to come. Basically, we’d learn more about what happened to Oliver Queen while he was missing for the five years that preceded his emergence as a vigilante in his home city.
Now, we won’t deny that this method of storytelling wasn’t always met with the greatest of fan reactions. Sure, they did provide for some compelling television – more specifically in seasons 1, 2 and 5 – but the fact of the matter is that the producers painted themselves into a corner by going in this route in the first place. Thus, if they just abandoned the origin story without completing it, we’d all feel shortchanged, like it or not.
But now that those five years are behind us, the cast and crew seem ready to move on.

So, no matter how much smoke the powers that be want to blow up our bums, our best guess is that they called an eleventh hour audible, possibly due to either not wanting to step on Margot Robbie’s toes or because the show wasn’t renewed for a fourth season until damn near the last minute. Seriously, go back and watch the closing moments and tell me they didn’t shoot them without considering the possibility that could’ve been the series finale.
