Just... Give me a reason to...

Misty's character gets a lot of flak from viewers, but honestly she's easily the most interesting character in the series. It helps that both Christina Ricci and Sammi Hanratty, the latter in particular, are so fantastic. She is basically straight out of a comic book, weird and awkward kid, then turns into a superhero out of circumstance. Misty acts as a foil to the other main characters, both past and present, she pushes the narrative.

More awkward sexuality from nearly every character. Misty's date went from pathetic, to sad, to hilarious. Some role-playing goes awry, though a rabbit gets sacrificed and loins are stirred. I get why Misty did what she did at the end of the episode, plus it removes "the easy out" from the storyline. Misty is in her element in the wilderness, after being treated like a pariah in the real world.

Sammi Hanratty was spectacular in this episode.

Lost with Gore

Similar to the format that Lost used, now that the plane has wrecked, we see that the format is going to intercut with plane wreck/marooned in the woods storyline to show us who these people were in their Before life. Unlike Lost, we also get an After life many years later (for those who survived). And it's def. More gory than Lost.

[7.6] 19 months...

Warning: Spoilers
Episode 2: A much better episode with lots of good acting, smoother development, flashbacks and some unrealistic actions near the end that shows an introvert psychotic character and cowardly scared behavior; The move is there for the sake of explanatory drama instead of real technical feasibility.

The box has already been there, in that place, for a few hours and the position and coordinates would have been known already. The resulted, however, explains (in the series) the 19 months period.

Parents, please love your kids

Whoa, that was a surprise but not a big one to be honest. We can all see here what lack of self love and confidence might do to a teen, especially if he was getting nothing then suddenly everything.

2 for 2 on the openers, then that's it

Warning: Spoilers
In ep 1 we open with the mystery surrounding the murder of a girl we know nothing about. The entirety of the episode played upon that mystery and left us with the ending of the plane crashing. Episode 2 picks up right where ep 1 leaves off. Its fast, exhilarating and it set the tone that this episode would be more focussed on their time after the crash. It was looking to be a good ep.

I thought there'd be 3 narratives going on, before, after and after the rescue: I was wrong. The before from ep 1 was just a sort of get to know the characters and now we follow two narratives: the teenagers after the crash and the adult versions after the rescue and well this brings gripes. The teenage vibe carries over after the crash, a huge crash has happened, they're surrounded by death, some of which may be their first time seeing death. The girls somehow come out of it with minor cuts and that first night they seem to be over it already. There was more drama involving side comments on why this one didn't save that one's life. There was no sense of urgency.

Past that, in present day, the adult counterparts are trying to investigate these mysterious postcards that have been sent to them. The show tries to maintain a mystery and they do a good enough job for a 2nd episode but it's run parallel by the narrative of a struggling marriage between one of our protagonists and it was just cringey. I am sure there are other ways to the deterioration or progression of a relationship other than sex but as feared from ep 1. Ep 2 firmly establishes that sex is a theme of the show unnecessarily.

The issue of running 2 narratives with the same characters shows that there aren't real stakes as you know who will survive for the most part but then that may just be a way of the writers telling us that this isn't about life and death, and the end result. It's about the journey of what they had to go through - which I can't get on board with at the moment as Misty intentionally damages the planes' black box because she likes the praise she is getting.

One thing I do have to mention is the haunting soundtrack makes its return and I'm glad they aren't over using it. It really does enhance the atmosphere.

Overall, the teenagey vibe is taking over it seems and I'm not here for it but the mystery angle is thickening and that is what is keeping me here enduring the moments of cringe themes and writing.

P. S. Where's leader Jackie, in the present day?

P. P. S. I'm not too sure if they were going for a horror vibe with the kid doing the drawings but it was more cringe inducing than disturbing.

Warning: Spoilers
We're slowly learning more about what is going on there and I am fine with the pacing. The adult stuff is kind of boring so I don't expect or even really need a big twist there.

I felt nothing...
overtradeiron16 May 2023
The quality in the dialogue, performances, effects, and pacing varies scene to scene.

The chemistry between the characters is not natural. The history is insisted by forced delivery. Shauna and Jeff have the worst chemistry. It's difficult to say these actors/actresses are terrible. Because without a proper script, and proper direction, performances will vary. Making the pacing stilted.

The pacing suffers most from the writing. The flow in story is jarring flashing back from past to future. And there are many examples of television and film doing this properly. But this show suffers greatly from the ebb and flow of drama, humor, shock gore, etc. And the pattern in which these change affects the tone; so when something dark happens, it is followed by an inappropriate "light-hearted" moment. And then switches back to a serious ominous tone which unintentionally ruins that moment, making it either feel out of place or inappropriate. Characters are irritating, and don't act like human beings. They make decisions that feel like they are only doing it for the convenience of the plot, and not because they are doing it out of the reaction of the environment they are living.

Maybe worst of all, there is very little redeeming qualities I can list. It's very stale and uninspired. A waste of time in my opinion.
