Lot to like and a lot to dislike.
eve_dolluk8 March 2024
First of all the style and photography of this film are good. I really enjoyed the style and way it was shot.

The story is a sombre tale of a dysfunctional family which in itself is fine but it really lacks the emotional weight to carry this through.

Luke David Blumm was good but more focus should have been on him, he is the centrepiece of the story.

Instead the film focuses around Lola played by Nichola Peltz Beckham..I thought that was a strange decision then lo and behold i find out it was written and produced by Nichola...

Rather than focus on the story and key characters we focus on Nichola, Nichola with her brother ( the best bits ) , Nichola arguing with her mum ( not so great or believable), Virginia Madson does an ok job of being a toxic mum.

Nichola with her friend ( kind of fun ) Raven Goodwin is decent.

Nichola at the strip club.

Nichola with her, kind of boyfriend ?

Nichola staring blankly into the distance.

Nichola looking upset with a blank stare.

Nicholas make up never changing throughout, sleeping, baths, rape, tears and trauma.

Plaudits to the DoP on this film as its beautifully shot and while Nichola is a beautiful girl she gets tiresome and lacks the emotional weight to pull off the character.

This could have been a lot better if Nichola was able to step back more and create something that was not just a Nichola Pelz Beckham showreel.

I guess when you have a billionaire father and Millionaire husband anything is possible though.

5/10.

seems like a solid low-budget movie
NesteaZen4 April 2024
Was reading comments around the attempted proxy takeover of Nicola's grandfather, many citing her performance in The Last Airbender 2010 and her appearance in movies in general as nepotism, supposedly thanks to her grandfather.

She directed, "wrote" (let's be honest not the most original story, given also the Lola naming legacy which sort of seals certain tropes) and starred in it.

I liked the shots. Her acting doesn't seem like it's forced or that she's acting for the camera. I'd say she's employing Michael Caine's film school tactics where she doesn't seem to be acting for the camera but the moment/scene.

The long, steady shots remind of Tarantino or European cinema overall. It mostly reminded me of Jennifer Aniston's, The Good Girl 2002 which currently sits at 6.4. Very similar in tone.

And I think I prefer it over About Cherry 2012 with Ashley Hinshaw & Heather Graham currently sitting at 4.6.

She probably could've gone over-budget like Zach Braff or the HIMYM guy, Josh Radnor, but she stuck to film that didn't break her bank. Just goes to show she must've been raised right and has her head screwed on right despite the potential for opulence given her grandfather's background.

So given the film quality I doubt her grandfather had anything to do with her project unless he was the one restricting it by telling her low-budget or bust. In either case, it's a good project. I was engaged.

I'm not sure what she could do with a different cinematographer (seems like Madeline Leach has a good track record anyway) or crew, but here's hoping and a question only she can answer. I'd give it somewhere between a 5 and a 6.5. I've definitely seen 3 star low-budget movies and this one blows them out of the water. Little to no cringe except for the bf she kept around.

Out of touch
ysnnnffq13 February 2024
In no way does this film depict what the reality of drug addiction/poverty is. It was a genuinely laughable attempt at doing so. It was painfully obvious that the director of this film was not drawing from real life experience and knowledge. I recommend watching The Florida Project instead for something that actually feels somewhat authentic. On top of this films inauthenticity it was also incredibly predictable and boring. I had to fast forward on many occasions because 50% of the film were just slow motion cameos of Nicolas face that make great clips for Instagram and TikTok but ultimately a terrible movie.

"The Room" By Tommy Wiseau Is A Better Movie
morganpaige-285369 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I think Nicola Peltz, the director of the film is a beautiful woman, you cannot deny that. And I really wanted to like it after seeing the trailer (which gives away the whole movie except for 2 plotlines) as someone who has a soft spot for movies like Thirteen, Girl Interrupted, Gia, Marie Antoinette etc, Lola is one of the worst movies I have seen in a long time, if not, ever.

The positives (?) : Beautiful cinematography, however nothing groundbreaking and original. Nicola looks good pretty much the ENTIRE time, even during the "uglier" scenes.

The Negatives: The pacing of this movie is the same the entire time. Most movies have a "climax" I didn't realize the climax for Lola had passed until the end of the movie. The movie also isn't that long given the context of the synopsis: Lola is eventually saving up enough money to run away with her sibling. I was surprised there was not a single montage even, as that's an easy way to speed up the pace in a movie with a long timeframe in its plot. There is 0 character development, even the main character Lola James is completely devoid of a personality. The most interesting character was Arlo, but everyone else is extremely unlikeable and bland. The movie is also written very badly and basically, it's obvious that the writer (Nicola Peltz) who is not an experienced script writer, had written this movie. The fact Nicola looks gorgeous the entire time is another thing that takes away the rawness & intensity of the film, and comes across more like a vanity project. Pretty much 90% of the films shots are either of Nicola, or unnessecary close-ups of her face.

Now for the ugly: People say "write what you know" and it's very obvious that Nicola Peltz does not know what it's like to live a life the way Lola James lives in the movie. It really does feel like torture porn, and that's supported by the complete lack of character development that's meant to make us feel sorry for the characters and root for them. This movie does a seemingly unintentionally great job at romanticizing extremely dark things that happen to a lot of people, especially drug-use.

The one thing that ruined this movie: The acting in this movie is honestly really not good. Being able to cry on camera is not grounds for good acting, we should be able to feel compassion for these characters, even distain, but ever. Single. Persons. Acting was extremely terrible, even Virginia Madsen (arguably the worst out of all of them) makes me wonder how much the actors enjoyed being on set, if actors who are usually decent are showing beginner level acting skills in an independent film financed by the directors billionaire, republican & conservative father, which just makes the lack of sensitivity around the plot line worse. This movie is 100% a vanity film & devoid of anything interesting.

I really wanted to like this movie, but "The Room" by Tommy Wiseau has better character development than this. And is overall a better movie, at least it's actually original. Lola James had potential, it really did but I think it needed to cook longer and needed a writers room, and maybe Nicola should have stayed behind the camera for this one, because it 100% comes off as a vanity project.

Disappointing Experience with "Lola"
yadiyusuf18 February 2024
As a passionate moviegoer, I had high hopes for "Lola," but sadly, it fell short in almost every aspect. From the wooden acting to the terrible Directing, this film left much to be desired.

First and foremost, the characters lacked depth and authenticity. It felt like I was watching cardboard cutouts recite lines rather than witnessing genuine human emotion. The lead actress failed to convey any real connection with the audience, making it difficult to empathize with her journey.

The pacing was another major issue. Scenes dragged on unnecessarily, while crucial plot points were rushed through, leaving me feeling disconnected and disinterested in the outcome.

Overall, "Lola" was a forgettable and lackluster cinematic experience. Save your time and money for a film that truly delivers on its promises.

Shocking awful
laidbacklad13 April 2024
Shockingly awful movie, the kind that isn't just bad, but makes you really mad that you wasted 2 hours of your life watching it.

This film reeks of what a socially privileged person, high up in a penthouse only looking down on the world, imagines what the poor and vulnerable might feel like. To those of us at the bottom, this imaginary tale just comes across as a pigeon pooping on us.

Maybe they meant well, maybe not, this still comes across as a piece of trash. It's more poverty porn and exploitation, than a clever, heartfelt exploration of the issues covered.

The plot is full of traumatic life experiences, but it never builds up or evolves into anything. It's just a series of unhappy events. Every 10 minutes or so, a new traumatic experience happens, which fills in the next 10 minutes, until the next bad thing to happen. It's like as if the writers spent a day watching chat shows using the events in each show to create 10 minutes of storyline. Eventually, instead of building a relationship with the characters, you end up being saturated by trauma and sadly feeling disconnected and losing all empathy - that's not a good feeling.

The film work is self-indulgent and feels like an attempt to replicate some of the techniques that make cinematography an art form. Mostly, it feels very amateur, but in one or two places, it's not too bad. It tries far too hard, and it misses the mark, and in any case, even if it was outstandingly filmed (which it isn't), the cliche riddled storyline is far too bad to give it a 2 star rating.

Lastly, transcending the storyline and writing, the acting is terrible. Like, really, really bad.

I detecting a nomination of at least one Golden Raspberry for this...

Storyline ok, Nicola's acting is TERRIBLE!
sarahsali-432982 March 2024
Wow, I think this could have been an ok movie if it was played by another actress. Most of the time you just get blank stares staring into thin air with no thoughts behind them. It's really just terrible acting!

This is also so predictable, stereotypical and boring. She obviously doesn't have the required emotional capacity to play this role. I would suggest you watch this if you have nothing to do it's no blockbuster.

Obviously the only reason why this is released is because her family is rich and she's not exactly ugly. It pays to have a rich dad to help you get anything you want in life but it can't buy you talent!

Lola Netflix - Disfunction with no accountability
yasbow3 May 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I was impressed by Lola:s character in light of the family dysfunction of hate and neglect. The care and love she showed towards her brother was amazing. Showing him support and understanding in his short life on earth. The religious misunderstanding was so hard to watch even though many households are dealing with this in real life. The people who's in charge, believe that you do as I say, not as I do. My score was given because they allowed a man to rape his step daughter, get her pregnant with no consequences. It's a bad example for young girls dealing with the same situation, because it make it seem as if it's ok.

Insulting.
maryhorobin12 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Aimless, illogical plot, insulting to people who genuinely experience trauma and poverty.

Shameless self-serving display from a very vain person who is either too arrogant and/or too ignorant to care about authenticity and the necessity of dealing with serious issues. Rape and abuse should never be cavalierly thrown into a plot with no proper exploration simply to create a glorified poverty aesthetic. Especially when the aesthetic is imagined from those (billionaires) least qualified to do so.

Truly hated this film and the entitlement of its creators. Would rate 0 out of 10 stars if I could.

Nicola AMAZED
candrabaguley12 February 2024
I'd been looking forward to Lola since the trailer brought tears to my eyes. As someone familiar with Lola's home life and life choices, I can say Nicola did an amazing job capturing the emotions that come with dysfunctional families and breaking the chain. I don't want to post any spoilers or anything else, but I need to hit my word count. If you haven't seen Lola, but enjoy shows like Shamless or films like Thirteen, give Lola a chance. You'll fall in love with Nicola and with Lola. I'm genuinely stunned at how much it felt like someone dipped into my memories and dramatized them, which means others from those situations can relate too.

Narcissist Project.
grelana2 March 2024
As others have said, the 10/10 reviews are obviously from shills connected with the movie or friends of Mrs Peltz-Beckham. The simple fact that it was written by, directed by, and stars Nicola should make you suspect that this is purely a vanity project, much like her husband's attempts to portray himself as a photographer and/or chef. And you would be right as she spends most of the film looking dead behind the eyes and completely detached from the storyline. She should stick to doing what she does best, being a "poor little rich girl", as she sure as hell doesn't have a future in the film industry.

In depth honest review.
txhurletbsx5 March 2024
Okay. I want to give my brutally honest opinion in depth. Because i have noticed no-one else really has on here yet. And i think it is necessary.

The cinematography, budget for talent, color scheme, costume/wardrobe(MINUS THE BELLY SHIRTS WHILE PREGNANT), set design, and drive for producing something that was supposed to give you a emotional reaction was 100% all there.

The writing and storylines are what failed this.

The fact that Nicola Peltz was born a billionaire and has not lived any of these moments or probably ever been within a 10 mile radius of any sort of actual struggle like these characters, is what makes this movie absolutely crumble. This was Nicola's play project to get to live a pretend life of trauma and poverty. (My assumption is being born so immensely wealthy resulted in her wanting to put on this fetish-ization of trauma p*rn).

But, i do think Nicola's performance and acting was honestly good. I will give her that. I would even argue that her performance was stronger than Virginia Madsens(who played the mom), who for such a seasoned actress was the weakest actor in this to be honest. The portrayal of the mother literally was a college improv class performance of "act like a 8 years sober from alcohol divorced middle age conservative mother who clutches their bible and is mentally abusive".

Starting off with the good: The LGBT youth storyline with Lola's younger sibling was the strongest written storyline and most interesting in this. And i think had the most memorable and best scenes in the film overall. I think the actor who played the younger sibling did a good job of balancing portraying innocence while still dealing with self conflict. At the end of each of Lola and her siblings scenes it would make me root for them to accomplish getting away from the mother and succeeding.

The scenes with Babina(Lola's friend and coworker) were also enjoyable to watch. I think the mellow friendship chemistry was portrayed well. I think it was realistic and sweet.

Now the bad: Lola's relationship with Malachi (her dr*g dealer and then BF) was super awkward and not realistic. It was such a push and pull of him being a F boy dirt bag and then magically cleaning up his act and caring that was so beyond unrealistic. Let's be real, when she was spiraling and was asking him for product he would of just looked at her as easy money customer.

The relationship with her mother/ all the interactions with her mother- like i stated above. Was just WAY too stereotypical to what a lower class middle age angry conservatives mother would be expected to react to having a stripper daughter and a LGBT son. It was a eye-rolling performance we've seen a million times on top of being poorly performed.

Lola wearing belly shirts and platform flip flops while 8 months pregnant????? Also having dr*g benders and still having perfect smokey eyeshadow cut creases + perfect skin??? Although i'll give them props for Lola having the that horrible greasy pee yellow box dye hair color, that was actually realistic.

Lola's job as a dancer. YIKES -where do i get started?

At the start of the movie it's almost alluded to Lola working at the club for a while to some extent. She certainly walks around the club as if she is comfortable and knows the process. Then about a half hour into the movie there is a scene in the back of the club where Lola talks to one of the other dancers and she expresses that she needs more money. This is when her fellow dancer coworker tells her about "the back room" and that she can make more money catering to clients in "the back room" - in a completely naive fashion that is so unbelievable it's laughable.

We are supposed to believe that Lola, a girl in her 20's who was raised in a lower middle class area -is a virgin who dresses skimpy and works at a strip club - has no idea about the s*x work that goes on often in strip clubs? Lola's character acts dumbfounded and as if she has never heard of such a thing going on before in the club. It's a horrendously out of touch and written scene.

Final thoughts: Okay after reading this all out, it was not my intention to drag this movie to shreds. I think most of what i am pointing out is what a-lot of other people are thinking too after watching this.

My main takeaway is when Nicola makes another project that she clearly has the budget + access to resources that can potentially make a good movie - is PLEASE get a writers team who will be brutally honest with you to help out with a more polished and realistic script.

Anyway, kudos if you read this far.

Also Nicola is you are reading this, hmu to help you write something- i can use some extra money.

Thank you. 💟

Terrible
clairerevermann17 February 2024
It's quite obvious that all the good reviews come from the US and are not true reviews. Probably paid to add good reviews. If this girl was talented and Daddy should invest to make her princess dreams come true, I'd be all in but she's not. Her writing her acting is terrible. This would never be released if her father wasn't rich. Don't waste your time.

There are amazing talented females who she should invest in and stop trying to be talented. Invest in a real film writer. Become a producer but don't stick yourself in front of us and actually expect us to take your seriously.

I'm sorry but go back to shopping and taking selfies. That's it girl.

rich girls fantasize about poor people.
flagkyokyo13 March 2024
Lets go to the good part about this movie.

-good cinematography -Raven Goodwin

now the bad one.

-Can someone tell now, what the f does the richest daughter in the entire country, knows about everything she talked about?

-Im only seeing a rich girl make an aesthetic of this life style.

-Her acting is awful, no soul, she doesn't dig more when she acts, always at the same level of boringness.

-The characters are flat, and its probably just because of the acting.

-Feels like a trauma dumping story from the author and the author probably doesn't know what it feels like to not have food on you're plate

If i could put a zero star, i would.

No one needed to see this movie.

What the heck did I just stumble upon?
MovieCriticOnline25 March 2024
What the heck did I just stumble upon?

I don't know what this movie was about nor did I ever finish it. She works at a convenience store but also as a stripper? Huh, what? It made ZERO sense. The reason why girls strip is NOT to work a normal job and make more money. They didn't think this through whatsoever.

And she is supposed to be best friend with the BBBW? What, like really, what? Then the gender confused little brother? Were they just trying to score every DEI box when they wrote this? I don't know what this movie was about.

And then the stereotypical strict "Christian mother" I mean seriously, how many times have we seen this premise before? So tired.

Nicola Peltz Beckham cut her husband from the movie apparently because of his bad acting, but did she look at herself?

The whole thing was just so cringe and tried way too hard to make the audience cry and feel emotional.

SKIP IT, SKIP IT GOOD!

A nepo baby's effort to show the world she knows nothing about almost everything
spacasinogirl-1290318 April 2024
This movie tries to be serious but is clearly an attempt to portray characters and conditions about which the writer/director/lead actor is dismally unfamiliar.

The story itself is trite and cliche. The "writer" clearly doesn't have a clue about the real world of the subjects of this movie. Maybe she's done some surface research but nothing contemporary or in depth and clearly has never interacted with (or even met) the people about which she writes.

The acting is wooden/artificial and and it would be high praise to call this directing effort incompetent.

My only "kind" word is that Virginia Madsen used to be a pretty good actress. She must be desperate to have agreed to be in this dismal pic.

Just a nepo baby who's career is going downhill
samwll7 April 2024
I would normally love this type of movie because it's such a moving plot, but I this would be so much better if it was written by someone who actually struggled growing up. Nicola Peltz is completely unreliable to me since her dad is a billionaire and she's never worked even one minimum wage job...her acting falls though and I couldn't finish the whole movie.

I admire she tried, and her isn't awful, but I was confused because she said she wrote this story and relates to it so much. How do you relate to this at all if you grew up with servants? I have to wonder about the positive reviews because this movie did not resonate with me at all.

Amazing!
ezea-6621014 February 2024
I think half the people writing negative reviews on this movie are just Nicola haters. Nicola brought many great actors together to create her vision and I thought it was amazing and captured the message perfectly. Her character was especially inspiring and moving. I love that Raven got to showcase her acting skills as well as she is so funny! I hope people give the movie a chance and don't judge just because a rich person is starring in it. Loooots of rich people play roles that don't represent them, so don't be turned off because of what others are saying. The sad truth is this story depicts many people's lives.

Just OK
missaymoo923 March 2024
Reviews on here seem to be very mixed. I am not aware of this Nicola person, the only thing I know is she is a nepo baby married to another nepo baby- David Beckham's son. It's cool she had the money and resources to make a film, too bad you can't buy talent.

The story line is kind of all over the place. It does not flow well, and the decisions Lola makes are not realistic to what an actual person in that situation would make. Nicola tried to make a film depicting what a poor person's struggle is like, but it's obvious she doesn't even have a clue. Maybe she should stick to what she knows- shopping, fashion, and luxury lifestyle.

Do yourself a favor and don't waste your time
tska-0796124 March 2024
I always enjoy a really good compelling drama, however this was not it. The main character of this movie was dull, predictable, and emotionless. It had potential to be a good film but the lack of character development and the no depth to this film; I was not able to connect at all to this film. Someone made a comment on this film it was like someone with a lot of money decided to connect what it was like to "struggle" and that's exactly what it's like. It was dry and miserable. Even the relationship between the brother and sister wasn't believable at all. I've never seen a drama film so emotionally disconnected than this one.

Lol
joachimokeefe15 April 2024
TL:DR There was another film called 'Lola' in 2022, never mind the 1961 version. Maybe they should have called this 'Lola 3'.

INTERIOR, A BATHROOM: DAY

You can guess from the title what level of non-originality we're talking about. Basically this is the story of an aspirational lowlife from a writer/director/star whose experience of low life is from watching 'Roseanne' once or twice.

As a high school project, it would be fair to middling; no characters, no plot, no suspense. Not technically terrible. One or two arguments, a death.. As a commercial release, it just makes you wonder 'what was the deal that got this world distribution?', which is the most interesting thing about it. Or the least uninteresting thing.

Pretty Eyes
ellipseanostalrius4 May 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Very pretty eyes. Nicola has pretty eyes. We can all agree on that. Can she act? I have no idea. There was no real dialog to work with, just countless closeups of Nicola's pretty eyes.

The sad attempt at pulling on heartstrings was so juvenile and offensive. Positioning a trans kid in the story then taking the easiest way out of even having them in the story was repulsive and lazy as F.

Drug-addict story was sloppy, not at all believable for a second. The "stripper" angle also lazy lazy lazy. CUT TO SHOT OF NICOLA'S PRETTY EYES.

I'd call the rushed, suddenly "getting her life together" scene's anti-climatic had there been any climatic scenes.

Really just floating from sparse, poorly written dialog to shots of Nicola's oh-so-pretty eyes.

Can't recommend. No.

Standing Ovation!!!
carolinabanegascorp17 February 2024
Lola totally hooked me from start to finish! Nicola Peltz rocked it with her acting - so versatile. The story had depth, and the emotions hit home, showing they really get storytelling. The camera work was spot-on, capturing the characters' vibes and making it way cooler than your usual indie flick.

For an indie, Lola went above and beyond, surprising me with its slick production. Everything, from the script to the direction and performances, flowed together smoothly. Nicola didn't just act - she told a story. Her character had layers that made the whole movie stick in my head.

The emotions in Lola were like a crazy rollercoaster, and that's all thanks to some seriously skilled craftsmanship. Laughs and tears felt real, connecting me to the characters big time. Major props to Nicola for juggling writing, directing, and acting - not an easy gig, but she nailed it.

The whole cast brought their A-game, creating a vibe that made every scene pop. Lola's impact isn't just on the screen; it leaves a mark if you're into well-made indie gems. I'd shout out to anyone looking for a movie that goes beyond the usual. Nicola Peltz has definitely made her mark, and I'm super pumped for whatever she does next - expecting pure brilliance after Lola's cinematic awesomeness!

Great movie

I think there is something for everyone in this movie. Very powerful and moving. I bought it on Prime so I can watch it again and again.

Lola James works to save enough money to get her little brother, Arlo, out of their toxic home. Arlo keeps her hopeful, until one tragic night, when her whole world gets uprooted. From that moment on, nothing will ever be the same.

Great acting lovely independent movie
yaelaabbey3 May 2024
Nicola's acting was surprisingly good even great I enjoyed the move I was sad to see people commenting about the fact that she is rich and created this movie .. hello she is an actress .. every actor has to get through in his life what he is playing in a role? To me people are just jealous at her and instead of giving honest opinion about the movie they are commenting about her life . Great independent project and I hope she will creat more . Best of luck. Important to say that I'm just a random person that rented the movie on Apple TV and I felt sad reading this horrible reviews We should always support young artist no matter their financial background .
