Land of the Lost by way of Lost
IonicBreezeMachine29 September 2021
On a routine drive through Los Angeles Eve Harris (Natalie Zea) along with her two children Izzy (Zyra Gorecki) and Josh (Jack Martin) find themselves running for their lives after a sinkhole opens in the La Brea tar pits swallowing up large chunks of the city and dozens of citizens in the process. While Izzy escapes, Eve and Josh fall in. Eve and Josh awaken in an unfamiliar land mostly unscathed while debris and vehicles from Los Angeles are scattered randomly about. The land is filled with unfamiliar flora and hostile wildlife which the group must survive against. Meanwhile in Los Angeles Eve's ex husband and former USAF pilot Gavin Harris (Eoin Macken) is experiencing unexplained visions of Eve in the other land and tries to convince the scientist from Homeland Security, Dr. Sophia Nathan (Virginie Laverdure), that Eve and Josh are still alive, unaware that Nathan knows more than what she says.

Created by David Appelbaum, best know for his work on The Mentalist and NCIS: New Orleans, La Brea marks yet another entry in the "post Lost" high concept cliffhanger format that is still trying to recapture the phenomenon of the mid-2000s ABC cultural phenomenon. NBC is no stranger to attempts with high profile misses like The Event and Surface as well as Heroes that started off well but degraded over time, all the way up to present day attempts like the NBC cancelled and Netflix revived missing plane drama Manifest and one season wonder Debris cancelled earlier this year. La Brea, filmed in the same area of Queensland, Australia as fellow aspiring Lost clone/one season wonder Terra Nova clearly has money and resources behind it but it's a bit too early to tell if it will be worthwhile.

The production values on display are high level with the opening LA sinkhole sequence approaching levels of the film San Andreas in terms of the effort put into the destruction of the city. It's a well done sequence, even despite some glaring contrivances that happen because it needs our characters to fall into the sink hole. Once we get into the strange land through the sinkhole, it's a nice looking isolated location with a solid natural location giving the world a familiar yet eerie feeling with how unnaturally quiet it is and contrasts nicely with the random debris and vehicles that have traveled with those who fell through the hole.

The character's are given basic establishment much like in the pilot of Lost where we're given tidbits of character that will be developed over time such as with Chiké Okonkwo's borderline suicidal Ty, Rohan Mirchandaney's self-medicating Scott, or a police officer whose pessimistic view leads her to horde resources for when "things break down". In comparison to the similar Terra Nova, I thought La Brea did a much better job of hooking me from the kickoff. For one thing we aren't anchored to a single family like in Terra Nova, and the two fronts of Gavin and Izzy in Los Angeles trying to bring back Eve and Josh while Eve and Josh try to survive a harsh unfamiliar landscape leads to interesting story possibilities and threads that could be well utilized.

La Brea's pilot episode is mostly strong, even if it has the typical TV drama hurdles to work around that have been well ingrained since Lost and it's many imitators. Whether it can maintain its core mystery and intrigue remains to be seen, but as first impressions go this isn't a bad launching point.

Sorry - good idea done poorly - there's better things to watch
cheddavis-855036 October 2021
The concept is good, but it's done poorly. The special effects are mostly poor (animals etc.). The actors may be ok, but the dialog they're given isn't good enough to interest the viewers. I did watch half of the second episode just be be sure, but I can find so much more on TV that provides much better entertainment. I'll be surprised if this lasts long.

Really Hope NBC Has Another Hit On Their Hands
shelbythuylinh1 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
And that really it could be another "Lost" or "Manifest". The latter on NBC there. As it is about a sinkhole that tears the city of LA apart. With Eve and her son Joshua separated.

Her estranged husband, military pilot Gavin and how it seems the series is focusing on him there. As he is in the present world while Eve and Joshua are in the BC world along with others.

And how a light over there is the key to bringing them home and hoping to figure out why Gavin has a lot of recurring nightmares as that also could be the key to explaining this mystery.

Hope they have another hit on their hands.

Terrible acting
beeradvocate13 October 2021
Interesting concept but poorly executed. Aside from that, it's hard to ignore the absolutely terrible acting. I'd pass and pick something better to watch.

So far, so good... but the script has a few "stupid slasher movie" scenes
midgetman-764836 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Although I enjoyed the first episode, and like the adult/modern syfi "Land of The Lost" premise of the series, it seems the writers have been influenced too much by the 80's slasher movies! The saber-tooth tiger scene at the ambulance was completely and unrealistically STUPID!!! They're right next to the rear doors of the ambulance they were JUST INSIDE, yet choose to run away from the tigers instead of talking cover in the vehicle!!!

The Light Is At The Bottom of The Barrel
wildernessbarbie30 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Seems like they're really scraping bottom with a lot of this trite dialogue. "We have to keep him awake or he'll die!" Since when?!!? The victim had an animal bite, not a concussion, and wasn't in shock. It sounds like it's a good thing she dropped out of pre-med.

Oh, and how does it make any sense to run AWAY from the big, steel reinforced box full of medical supplies and into the woods, at night, in a prehistoric world when threatened by a saber toothed tiger?

People really need to stop listening to the character that keeps screaming "RUN!" when a big predator shows up, immediately triggering their prey drive and causing panic.

I love me some apocalyptic sci-fi, even if it's Dante's Peak implausible. This was so cliched that I don't think I can get past it.

I am a big fan of disaster films, however....

Warning: Spoilers
When I first heard about this show I was excited to watch it. In the first couple minutes of the episode I was turned off by the less than mediocre acting and bad CGI. It just seemed to get worse as it progressed.

I wasnt expecting the hole was a portal to another time. Maybe I didnt watch trailer all the way through and somehow missed this? Either way this was yet another turn off as the plot has been done multiple times in different ways by the scifi network. The acting and series of events got worse as the show progressed. Even worse, this series is on NBC and will more than likely get canned quickly. If there werent already enough reasons to not get into this series.

Through the whole episode I had so many questions like how did all this stuff fall in a sinkhole and wind up on the other side, most in almost mint condition. Most cars landed up right an were barely damaged. There was only 1 disclosed death and about 20 or so people walking around when it was clear 100s fell in the whole. Not to mention none of the buildings that fell in the hole showed on the other side unless you cant the small stack of plywood with a building logo on top a 15 story building compressed to almost nothing but if that is the case (which it cant be) how come most everything else arrived in its correct shape an not compressed? There is also a bus stall in perfect condition in the middle of the field, how? Character interections get worse and feel forced and there is some type of telepathic connection tbat supposedly some guy had his whole life, really? I honestly feel like someone made this in college for a video production class. It all around seems like a cheap not well thought out production and not destined to become a multiple season show. Even if it was, NBC would probably cancel it as I dont see this show gaining a very big fan base.

Could do better
JJSM2229 September 2021
The series premier feels rushed like they're trying to fill a seasons worth of trust and team building in just the pilot episode. It would be more realistic to see people freaking out more rather than everyone somehow turning into survivalist experts. The CGI is also a bit of a let down, the destruction caused by the sinkhole is just so out of place when you see the people running away. Frankly a lot of what I see is just cheesy and unoriginal.

Now, where'd I put that formula outline....
NullUnit29 September 2021
So formulaic.

It's smart of the writers to acknowledge Lost in the script for episode one. There's an absolute comparison. Thing is, for most who watched Lost faithfully.. they were pretty much let down completely by the ending, what there was of it. If you read Lost reviews at the time, people seemed to feel betrayed, jilted, and like they just wasted YEARS watching.

Producers ask themselves why they can't catch the "magic of Lost" again.. there's why. Viewers have been scorned and see the formula a mile away.. the padded episodes.. the weird twists that aren't explained. It's all too familiar in La Brea.

So, so many comparisons to Lost it's unreal. Episode one was a fun game of "spot the Lost storyline". I'll probably catch episode two just to see if the tropes continue... but my hopes for this are pretty low.

It's standard network TV with a slightly larger CGI budget - at least for the first couple episodes, until they get into the character flashback episodes. There's nothing really "new" here - merely a reimagining or rewriting of past successes.

I can predict the outline for every episode which will follow...

  • 5 minute opening to add to the primary "what, why how" storyline....
  • 28-32 minutes of some random story that really has little or nothing to do with how, what, why all this happened... Something like fending off prehistory animals or character flashbacks....
  • 5-7 minutes of ending to add to the main story and end on a cliffhanger...

there's your formula.

No one's life will be diminished if they skip this series.

Wonder how long it'll take before they find the "Darma" hatch?

Pilot
Prismark103 August 2022
The pilot of La Brea mentions Lost. In short that is the premise with a little dash of Land of the Lost.

Eve Harris is taking her teenage kids to school. She and her son with some other people fall down an enormous sinkhole in the vicinity of La Brea Tar Pits.

They find themselves seemingly back because of prehistoric wolves. They need to figure out where they are and look to survive.

Back in Los Angeles, some prehistoric birds have emerged. Gavin Harris, Eve's estranged husband and their daughter Izzy try to find out what happened.

The authorities seem to be tight lipped as they send a probe down. However Gavin seem to have strange visions and believe that his wife and son are alive.

Gavin is the vital link to both stories. He already has aroused interest from the two dimensional government agents.

The first episode worked hard with the set up. The characters were very much cookie cutter style. I'm not sure the high concept will totally fly.

Pretty bad introduction to the show!
brettdeath8 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The Pilot for La Brea does not do the series any justice. As in my opinion, La Brea grows to become a relatively good show. The pilot crams way too much into its first episode, it also creates too many characters and too many variables and problems/sub-plots. It also starts the story-line where Josh's leg is bitten. This specific sub-plot I despised and found it extremely weak, boring and un-enticing. The effects are also really poor for a show with a $60-70 Million Dollar budget!

In Conclusion, this is a terrible start to a show that I would later grow to like and enjoy. This episode turned me off from watching new episodes for a while. I just urge you to continue and not make the same mistake I did. Believe me, It gets better! In saying that, the CGI stays crap for the entirety of the show.

More political stuff
ajwiiiaw18 October 2021
This is a decent show with a redone idea that would be fun to watch if they didn't start right away going down the political rabbit hole. In the first 5 minutes you put in at least 5 different politically driven ideas. There is also some very very bad acting.

If plot holes was a drinking game you would be drunk by the end of episode 1
vargas-9288715 February 2024
Nothing makes sense. What worked or was stated in one moment does not hold true the next. Linear time travel makes this worse. Since they can go back and tell themselves thing which make them remember in the present but only sometimes. Plots get forgotten and they add more and more to make up for it. I feel like Sheldon from the big bang theory. I committed to see this to the end. One episode had a giant snake that you could see from above the water but the people in the water could not see it. They also tested the depth of the water for a few inches and deemed it safe to cross. They trusted people with no reason only to get burned time and time again. Villains came from austin powers reject pile. They could send things to the present by burying them in 10,000 BC. Why not bury a note to not go to the sink hole location in 2021 problem solved.
