07 Ghosts – super powered bishonen in uniforms fighting evil, what could be better.
lonedreameryaoi6 June 2011
Warning: Spoilers
OK so yes this is an anime that I started watching because of the fan girl in me. Of course I wasn't going to let it go unwatched there's an entire cast of hot bishies one side is military (yay uniforms) the other is the church (yay flouncy robes). I have to say I loved this series it was everything it needed to be, the men were hot, the action great, the story interesting, the scoring was good, the world was interesting and the slash was abundant. The story revolves around Taito Klein, orphan slave recruited into the military but highly ostracised by the other recruits. He is training to become part of the next military cadets with the only friend willing to put aside their backgrounds for the sake of friendship. But alas Taito finds out that the general killed his father and he is the heir to a kingdom that this militaries country destroyed. Taito goes a little crazy attacks the general and gets put into a cell. His best mate helps him escape and Taito manages to crash into a group of bishops and is rescued into sanctuary which is governed by the church and therefore the military cant come and take him back (pesky politics). So this is where our story really begins Taito of coarse has a secret hidden power, hidden memories he must recover, a sense of not knowing where he belongs, a lot of angst, a best friend he misses dearly, a new mentor and guardian in the form of a hot bishop that reads porn and is the centre of a government conspiracy. But this is not all, it turns out that this world is being invaded by demons trying to eat people's souls and it's the church that is fighting the evil spreading through the world. Taito is stuck in the middle of so many dilemmas, does he seek the truth behind the fall of his kingdom, does he seek revenge against the military that killed his father, does he join the church and help fight this evil or does he sit about and angst about how unfair his life is. In truth he goes through all of these in some way or the other. Most of the series concentrates on his journey to find his true path, his true destiny and coming to terms with who he is and where he belongs. This really is just fun watching and did I mention how hot the characters are? You can't fault a fun and interesting series. It's not the most original but it does have a great mythology running through it. Gods ruled the earth, one though was a little evil and decided that he wanted to corrupt and play havoc with the world. Well he was sealed away and to make sure he can not be reborn 7 death gods (shinigamis) were sent to protect the seal and stop him from ever resurrecting, they are known as the 7 Ghosts. Each Shinigami represents a quality or emotion, they are the seven aspects that make up god and these Shinigami have been reincarnated into the world as humans. Their role is to stop the spread of evil, as too much evil and soul eating will cause the re birth of the big bad god. The other aspect of the mythology is that each soul before being born to humanity goes before god and tells him what 3 things they would like to achieve as humans on earth. When they are born they of course forget these three goals but when they achieve them their lives are complete and they can transcend and move onto heaven. I like the mythology the idea that you have set goals you yourself have set that you must achieve in life otherwise you can't die and move onto the next life. It's an interesting idea that is unique to this series. The anime for 07 Ghosts is very much a prequel for bigger things to come. By the time you've finished it you realise that this series is only the beginning, that everything that has happened leads to Taito's decision in the final episode and where Taito has to go from hear. All the characters play important roles and a few are set up leaving you thinking they will have more importance to play at a latter date. Therefore the series has one of those ending no endings and I hope to god that they make more or that the manga is further ahead as |I really want to know what happens next. Plus I am a yaoi fan girl and I love slash so I want to enjoy more beautiful "friendship" moments between characters.

Loved the anime despite its imperfections
Z-Trifonova29 July 2013
The story was very interesting and full of twists. Inspite of that I think it's better to read the manga since the anime was left with open ending and didn't fully explain everything. The artwork was amazing. The characters were so unbelievably sexy (you'll drool the whole time while watching this). The places shown were very beautiful, too. The characters were very well developed and very likable (that includes the bad characters, too). Mikage was such a strong character. I really admired him. Most of the peaces in the soundtrack were so peaceful but at the same time some of them were very sad. The opening song was amazing. I loved the anime despite its imperfections :)

Very badass anime
Irishchatter16 July 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I thought this anime was brillant with its fantastic soundtrack, it's attractive characters of men and its story. Although I do wish it didn't have a cliffhanger but I suppose that's what you get when it's manga based!

Teito and Mikage should've at least been a couple, I found that killing off Mikage in ep 9 was such a bad idea. He like Teito, was like such a strong character with a likeable personality! Even though he's a bad guy and killed Teitos father, Ayanami was pretty much a likeable character too! The Japanese voice actor who did him, made the character Ayanami into such a badass character that i personally think he is one of the best anime villains of my list lol!

9/10 I give this should've been a Yaoi anime lol!

it sucked
ginobeans24 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I thought it sucked. I watched the first three episodes and then skipped to the last episode.

Early on, Teito suddenly remembers that a powerful figure killed his father, so he immediately launches an attack on the figure, getting himself into deep jeopardy. This seemed pretty juvenile and unwise, and likely suicidal. I found this a great turnoff.

Also, the characters seem to revolve around the main character in an unnatural, narcissistic manner. I kept wondering why a bishop would evince such a stalker level of interest in the main character. Like, Teito tries to escape the sanctuary, for various reasons and the bishop, and others, physically prevent him from doing so. If I were the bishop, know what little I knew, I would have advised him against leaving, but ultimately respected his wishes

It's as if the world literally revolved around Teito. This seemed like bad, narcissistic writing to me.

A poorly written series that appeals mostly through erotic aesthetics rather than good directing and character emersion
ThatAnimeSnob27 November 2022
It had a big fandom when it aired, most of which were yaoi females. It was also made by DEEN, the studio anime went to die with lazy production values and poor directing by the guy who ruined Record of Lodoss War and Beelzebub with his dull handling of the source material.

ART: Don't I look hot in this robe?

A blend of medieval fantasy and science fiction, the artwork can be catchy with its fairy tale-ish aesthetics. It also combines clergy life, occult mystery and military super-soldier projects for some rather surreal backgrounds. It's also a series of bishounens, so it will be extra captivating to fujoshis. Everybody is made to look like a dream boy any fangirl would kill just to touch his hair. They have glances and smirks that can lure you into their arms in less than 3 seconds. There are some women and old people as well but they are just background decoration or cute mascots, like a perky mermaid, a fuzzy pink critter and a trio of aloof sisters.

The series can look awesome when you focus on frozen frames, but when you notice how terrible the animation is then things get messy. Action scenes and visual effects are you typical DEEN crap, with battle choreography being a joke, explosions never damaging the background, and magic attacks existing on a different plane of existence since they were computer rendered instead of drawn along with the background. The characters stand still way too much, flapping mouths is most of what is moving, and jumping is just a static picture that slides across the screen. I can go on for hours, but you can just check the opening to see that Teito fellow sitting on a spiky rooftop without it somehow sticking in his ass. So yeah the series disregards physics, making all battles completely boring and fake-looking. Just imagine that most action is limited to characters shaking their hands and magic stuff appearing that doesn't affect the environment or other characters. If you are going to make it so bad, don't make it at all.

SOUND: I love you Mikage! ... in an erotically innuendo way only!

Voice acting is nothing remarkable and it's mostly the actors trying to sound like gays in love. The music on the other hand is very pleasing, making your mind travel with various chorus pieces.

SCRIPT: Oh forget about the fate of the world and just look at me walking elegantly

It sounds mighty interesting as a concept with military secret ops, mystical temples, scary ghosts, gay innuendos, a sort of detective feeling, and a lot of daily life in a fantasy setting. The overall ideas are mighty interesting, but when you watch it is so darn slow. Most episodes don't even seem to progress the plot and the rest give you only a few seconds of important info. They could have taken out half the total duration and it still wouldn't feel rushed.

It is also straightforward, since despite its events affecting the lives of millions it centers on five people at the most. It's too focused on the military base and the temple, and it completely ignores every other location of an otherwise huge and complicating setting. There is no pay-off at the end either, since it escalates for many episodes and ends with the story left incomplete.

CAST: Pick the one you want to date

Just like playing a date sim, the series is full of ero/moe archetypes you are suppose to like for their variety in looks and mannerisms and not for their personalities. Most of the cast was useless to the plot anyways; it was just there to increase your possible dream boyfriends. The only characters the series needed was Teito and Mikage (the main couple... er, I mean pair), any one of the priests, and Ayanami the psycho military man. The rest were dressing. The only thing you are left to gasp at is the pretty faces of the males. More specifically, their frozen still faces with a smirk full of erotic innuendo, while their hair and cloths flap in the wind with a few repeating frames.

LEGACY: Neeext!

If you are a seasoned viewer this series will offer you nothing. It's not even remotely interesting. The plot is snoringly slow and the characters are too generic. It was only made for horny fujoshis, and even then it's a one-time watch at best, since it doesn't do much with its content and was left incomplete. It got forgotten pretty soon and is now buried under some pile of equally mediocre anime.

It's all about becoming a man, revenge, friendship and an incessant need for battle.

I watched the first episode as part of an anime marathon... And what did I think? PRETTY GOOD STUFF. The main guy has a DARK AND MYSTERIOUS PAST which is intriguing, and the relationship with his best friend is already a good dynamic this early on. The cast are well written... even the bad dude has some level of complexity. That doesn't make him any less of a jerk, though.

It ends on quite a big cliffhanger. Will I see the second in the series? Of course... eventually. 6/10
