It’s icky, drippy and grindingly gross — and will make your forehead itch — but Abel Ferrara’s Bowery-set dime store horror opus has withstood the test of time. It’s a decent enough psychodrama, if one can set aside all the psychological-philosophical booshwah that’s leaked into horror criticism. Oops, Savant’s guilty of that too.

As some may have noticed, I’ve mellowed on the output of low-budget and independent horror efforts from the 1970s. While I was in film school bending my own tastes toward high production values and artistic merit, some crazy young filmmakers,...

I have something of a love hate relationship with The Driller Killer. Depending on my mood I really like it, yet at other times it just doesn’t connect. This may be down to the versions I’ve seen: the cut, the picture quality, etc. With Arrow Video’s latest Blu-ray release though, there are no excuses as to whether I like it or not – it’s time to make a decision!
Abel Ferrara both directs and stars in the story of Reno Miller, the artist struggling to survive in New York City. Failing to make an impact with his art, cracks begin to show in his sanity and a psychotic alter-ego takes over. Attacking vagrants on the streets...

"Rome is finished, my friend." Pier Paolo Pasolini is one of the most iconic filmmakers Italy has ever produced, and he also had his hands in many other arenas as a poet, novelist, journalist, playwright, actor, painter, philosopher, and more. Now Willem Dafoe (Spider-Man, Out of the Furnace) will bring him to life in the aptly titled Pasolini, the latest film from Abel Ferrara (Bad Lieutenant, Mulberry St.). The film chronicles the final days of Pasolini's life and the events surrounding his murder. Now the first trailer for the film has arrived (the film plays at Tiff), and this looks to be a promising turn from Dafoe. Watch! Here's the first trailer for ABel Ferrara's Pasolini from Cine Maldito (via The Playlist): Pasolini is directed by Abel Ferrara (Bad Lieutenant, Mulberry St.) from a script he co-wrote with Maurizio Braucci and Nicola Tranquillino. The film is playing...

Those familiar with Gerard Depardieu might not immediately picture him as a dastardly fiend who messes with the unsavory side of corrupt international banking. But that's exactly what the French actor becomes in Welcome to New York, the latest film from Abel Ferrara (King of New York, Mulberry St.). The film has already debuted in France, and is poised to hit the United Kingdom, so that means we get a trailer from across the pond. However, be careful where you watch it, because the crazy antics of Depardieu make it completely Nsfw. It's basically like a foreign version of The Wolf of Wall Street, so there you go. Here's the UK trailer for Abel Ferrara's Welcome to New York from Altitude Film: Welcome to New York is directed by Abel Ferrara (King of New York, Chelsea on the Rocks, 4:44 Last Day on Earth) who co-wrote the script with Christ Zois,...

Abel Ferrara is an uneven but always interesting director whose films unfortunately don’t get the exposure they should. To the rescue comes Anthology Film Archives, which will devote a week to his movies of the past decade. Ferrara will be at the Anthology on opening night, Friday, and at “selected screenings” during the rest of the series. The retro includes his two most recent works, both documentaries: “Mulberry St.” (2009), a portrait of Ferrara’s home base, Little Italy, and “Napoli Napoli Napoli” (2009), about the Italian city of Naples. I enjoyed...
