Last summer, in IndieWire’s review of “The Meyerowitz Stories,” this critic wrote that “It remains hugely frustrating how great Adam Sandler can be when he’s not making Adam Sandler movies.” If it didn’t seem necessary to hash out the distinction between a movie with Adam Sandler, and an Adam Sandler Movie, that’s only because the difference between the two is ridiculously obvious.
The former category includes fiercely beloved masterpieces like “Punch-Drunk Love” and “Funny People.” The latter category includes minor crimes against humanity like “That’s My Boy” and “Grown Ups 2.” If you see him in something directed by James L. Brooks, someone who idolizes James L. Brooks, or even by someone who’s met James L. Brooks, then you’re probably watching a movie with Adam Sandler. By sheer coincidence, I’ve spent the last week playing two games that, on paper, couldn’t be any more different from each other. Despite its greater emphasis on accessibility, Monster Hunter World (which, for the record, I’m quickly becoming a fan of) is complex to say the least, with a dozen different gameplay systems to learn and master, and enough customization and weapon options to keep you busy for dozens of hours. On the other side of the spectrum lies Shadow of the Colossus, or rather, its PlayStation 4 remake. Unlike Monster Hunter World, Team Ico’s magnum opus is a shining example of minimalist design; a stark contrast to the overly complex worlds which grace our TV screens in this day and age.
But before I get into the game’s masterful design, let us focus on something else that I mentioned earlier. Contrary to what your local...

A teasing new image suggests that the maker of Ico and Shadow Of The Colossus is working on a brand new game...
Back in January 2007, Japanese game designer Fumito Ueda got his fans in a lather with a single image: a rusty chain emerging from what appeared to be an old, moss-covered well. It didn't look like much, and given that the image was discovered in a job listing on Sony's website, could have been overlooked altogether. But such was the affection for Ueda's first two games, Ico and Shadow Of The Colossus, the mere thought of a third title was exciting enough by itself.

Their father (Dylan Baker) is away with the Union Army and though the fighting is distant, its effects are still very much felt. The videogame Shadow Of The Colossus looks like it's coming to the big screen after all...
Now this could be good. There had been talk before about bringing the excellent videogame Shadow Of The Colossus to the big screen (with Chronicle, Fantastic Four reboot and now Star Wars director Josh Trank attached at one stage). And now it looks as though Sony Pictures has resurrected the project, given that it's appointed a director to it.
Said director is Andres Muschietti, who broke through with the horror film Mama. For some time, he was attached to direct Universal's reboot of The Mummy, before parting company with that particular project. Alex Kurtzman is the new Mummy helmer.
Muschietti will bring Shadow Of The Colossus to the screen off the back of a screenplay that Seth Lochhead is writing. There's clearly some way still to go here, and Uncharted will be the next...

Sony Pictures Entertainment today announced that Andres Muschietti has signed on to direct the highly-anticipated adaptation of best-selling PlayStation software title, “Shadow of the Colossus.” Seth Lochhead to write the screenplay (under Muschietti’s supervision). Barbara Muschietti will come on board the project to produce alongside Kevin Misher, who produces through his Misher Films banner.
The Muschiettis’ most recent film was the breakout 2013 horror-fantasy Mama, which the Argentine director helmed and Barbara Muschietti produced, based on their 2008 short.
As they join Misher and Lochhead on the project, the filmmaking team will again depict the supernatural in Shadow, set in an epic-scale world filled with mythic giants and disembodied spirits. A fan of the game, Muschietti has a strong vision for the film and its characters, and seeks to translate the immersive game experience into a film that stays true to the human story of a young man attempting to save...

For a while, it appeared that Chronicle’s Josh Trank would be the man to tackle the film adaptation of Sony PlayStation title Shadow Of The Colossus. But with Trank busy on Fantastic Four and one of the Star Wars spin-off films, a new director is called for, and Mama’s Andy Muschietti is stepping into the breach. The strange and beautiful game focuses on a character called Wander, who must, er, wander through a cursed waste called the Forbidden Land and slay 16 enormous "colossi" (this basically involved searching a creature hundreds of times your size for the tiny "glowy bit" where they are vulnerable) in order to save the life of a girl, Mono. The title was much praised for its gorgeous art and high-quality score, and is sufficiently bare bones of plot that there is lots of room for scriptwriters to find a story. While Justin Marks was...

Hands up if you loved Mama! That sneaky little horror from Universal crept up from out of nowhere, landing a wodge of good reviews and a $146 million worldwide box office. Not bad for a small-time Argentinian director with few credits on his resume, right?
Well, as it turns out, Andres Muschietti may be a name you’ll be more familiar with in the future, as Sony Pictures has hired the director to tackle his first video game adaptation, Shadow Of The Colossus.
The Playstation mega-hit was a bestselling game for Sony, which sold 2.7 million copies. Commended by fans and critics alike for its realistic world building, the game adaptation is much-anticipated. Set in a fantasy world, the story follows a young man who believes his true love to be dead. Armed with the knowledge of a demon who can rouse the dead, he sets off into an epic world filled with a host of beasties.

Sony has signed Hanna's writer for its adaptation of the videogame, Shadow Of The Colossus...
If you've never played Fumito Ueda's 2005 game Shadow Of The Colossus, it's perhaps best described as a kind of interactive tone poem. Although it could be pigeonholed as an action platformer with puzzle elements, it was the game's minimalist atmosphere and sense of desolation which marked it out as something truly special.
Sony has had a movie adaptation of its PlayStation 2 game in development for some time, with Chronicle director Josh Trank attached as its director. Justin Marks (the writer of Street Fighter: The Legend Of Chun-Li) wrote an initial version of the script, which might sound like vaguely worrying news for some, but the latest word is that Canadian writer Seth Lochhead is now onboard to work on a new draft.

Seth Lochhead, the Canadian scribe who co-wrote the action thriller Hanna, has been hired to work alongside Josh Trank on the Shadow of the Colossus script. Justin Marks wrote an early draft back in 2009. Chronicle's Trank will also direct, but is apparently still attached to two Marvel comic book properties as well - Venom and the Fantastic Four reboot. The story of Shadow Of The Colossus deals with a young man who thinks his lover has died, and desperate to bring her back, he makes a deal with a demon resurrect her - but only if he slays 16 giant creatures known as Colossi first. Kevin Misher will produce the movie, with Misher Films’ Andy Berman and Kevin Chang overseeing.

After a few years that have seen studios deciding to focus on trying to make movies out of board games, it looks, from the last couple of days, as though video games are cycling back around as the hot source material. Monday saw Michael Fassbender announced as the star and producer of a film based on Ubisoft's hugely popular "Assassin's Creed" franchise, while yesterday a movie based on the long-running "Deus Ex" series was set up at CBS Films, Sony's "God Of War" film got new writers, and Dreamworks' "Need For Speed" got a firm 2014 release date. All this on top of the announcement a month or so back that "Chronicle" director Josh Trank was developing a "Shadow Of The Colossus" film, based on the seminal Playstation 2 game of the same name, and with 3D game-derived horror sequels "Resident Evil: Retribution" and "Silent Hill: Revelation" gearing up for release in the fall,...

Exclusive:While 20th Century Fox isn’t banging the gong at Comic-Con this year, the studio has big developments on several geek-worthy projects. * Fox has officially set Chronicle helmer Josh Trank to direct the reboot of Fantastic Four, and the film will be the next Marvel property to be slated for production and dated for release by the studio. Fantastic Four, which will include a new cast, falls into line after The Wolverine sequel that starts production shortly, and the Matthew Vaughn-directed X-Men: First Class, which is also on a fast track. After Trank’s breakthrough with the Fox sleeper hit Chronicle he has been offered everything and attached himself to several projects. But I’m told that Fox expects Fantastic Four to be the next film he directs. It’s scripted by Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz, who also wrote X-Men: First Class and Thor. The history of the video game movie has not been a glorious one. With most games being fairly heavily derivative of movies in the first place, potential adaptations have struggled to become distinctive, and low-calibre talent has generally been involved to date, bastardizing games (e.g. "Super Mario Brothers") or simply choosing the wrong ones to adapt (like the string of movies based on beat-em-ups). When the not-very-good "Doom" is pretty much the high watermark of the genre to date, you know you're in serious trouble. But with "Chronicle" director Josh Trank working on a version of acclaimed game "Shadow Of The Colossus," things might be looking up, and now another serious name has come on to take a role both in front of and behind the camera with a big-screen take on one of the most acclaimed and best-selling game franchises of the last few years. Yes, Michael Fassbender...

One of the most acclaimed and beloved games that appeared on the PlayStation 2 (and remastered last year for the PS3) may be getting a film adaptation.
"Chronicle" director Josh Trank has approached Sony Pictures about the idea of adapting Team Ico's 2005 video game "Shadow Of The Colossus" into a feature says Deadline.
Set in a mystical and forbidden land, the story follows a hero who wants to raise his beloved from the dead. The price though requires him to kill 16 giant creatures known as the Colossi, and along the way he begins to worry he's been tricked.
Kevin Misher is producing the project and he and Trank are currently seeking scribes for the project. Trank has already been linked to several other projects including Warner Bros’ The Red Star and Sony’s Venom.

The film will be produced by Kevin Misher (Public Enemies, Mirror Mirror) and the studio are said to be currently searching for a screenwriter to work with the Chronicle helmer. Trank has reportedly been a fan of the video game since its release in 2005 and actively sought out the job. Here is a description of the plot from the site. Josh Trank delivered a genre hit to Fox earlier this year with his superhero thriller Chronicle, a story he co-wrote with Max Landis about a group of teenage friends who unexpectedly gain super powers and lose control of their lives in the process. Budgeted at a modest $12 million, Chronicle went on to earn $126 million worldwide; putting Trank in high demand as a filmmaker. Deadline reported today that Trank joined Sony’s adaptation of their top-selling videogame Shadow Of The Colossus, about a young man who makes a pact with a demon in order to bring his lover back from the dead and sets out to slay 16 colossus monsters in exchange for her life.
