In the wake of indie horror movie Gacy: Serial Killer Next Door earlier this year, Peacock has ordered their own limited scripted series based on the John Wayne Gacy murders.
The new Peacock series comes from “Dr. Death” creator Patrick Macmanus.
Variety reports, “The announcement was made during the Television Critics Association winter press tour. The series is inspired by the 2021 Peacock/NBC News Studios docuseries John Wayne Gacy: Devil in Disguise, with the scripted series sharing the same name.”
Here’s the official synopsis from Peacock: “From 1972-1978, thirty-three young men were kidnapped, murdered and buried in a crawl space beneath their killer’s house. And no one was the wiser. Not for all those years. Why? He was charming and funny. Had a good, All-American job. Was a community leader. He even volunteered to entertain sick kids… while dressed as a clown. ‘Devil In Disguise: John Wayne Gacy...

Similar to its streaming competitors like Netflix and Hulu, Peacock has been tackling the true-crime genre with dramatized series like "A Friend of the Family" and investigative documentaries that include "John Wayne Gacy: Devil in Disguise." The streamer's latest docuseries, "Who Killed Robert Wone?" examines the 2006 unsolved murder of 32-year-old Robert Wone and the circumstances that surrounded his mysterious death, which continue to divide investigators today.
At the time of his murder, Wone was spending the night at the house of Joseph Price, a friend he had known since college, along with Price's domestic partner, Victor Zaborsky, and their roommate (and sometimes romantic partner) Dylan Ward. After finding Wone lifeless in bed, the trio called 911 and alleged that an intruder broke into the home and killed Wone before leaving the residence. How do serial killers get away with murder — or, to be more accurate, multiple murders? That question has haunted Americans through the decades known as the so-called Golden Age of Serial Killers until today, fueling the ever-chugging true crime industry. The latest subject under the microscope has undoubtedly been John Wayne Gacy, who got the Peacock treatment last year with John Wayne Gacy: Devil in Disguise, and is the next subject in Joe Berlinger’s Netflix property Conversations With a Killer. The John Wayne Gacy Tapes premieres on April 20, 2022.

David E. Kelley has been a TV legend since the ’80s — and he’s shown no signs of stopping, being responsible for some of the most-discussed television shows of the last few years, thanks to hits such as “Big Little Lies,” “The Undoing,” and “Nine Perfect Strangers.” Now, Kelley is hoping to replicate his more recent successes at HBO and Hulu via “The Missing,” a new crime drama series that is slated to premiere on Peacock.
Peacock announced a straight-to-series order for “The Missing” on Monday. Kelley will serve as showrunner, writer, and executive producer on the eight-episode series, which is based on the international bestselling novel “The Missing File,” the first in a series of books written by Israeli crime writer Dror A. Mishani.
The news is the latest in a string of announcements that reinforce the idea that Peacock is becoming a streaming hub for crime programming from a variety of creators.

NBCUniversal and Amazon just announced that Peacock will launch on Amazon Fire TV and Fire tablets in the U.S. starting Thursday.
The Peacock app will bring thousands of hours of on-demand movies and shows, as well as live news and sports programming, to Fire TV and Fire tablet customers nationwide. I hear the announcement, which was teased on social media yesterday, is part of a larger partnership between Amazon and NBCU, with more announcements coming soon.
It’s a significant breakthrough for the year-old streaming service, as Fire reaches more than 50 million U.S. households. The distribution deal fills in the last remaining gap in Peacock’s distribution. NBCU recently announced a pact with Samsung, the leading smart-tv maker, and last fall reached terms with Roku, the top streaming gateway.
The news comes just a month before the start of NBCU’s Tokyo Olympics coverage, in which Peacock will play a key role.

This story about “Night Stalker” first appeared in the Race Begins issue of TheWrap’s Emmy magazine.
Making a documentary about sadistic serial killer Richard Ramirez, also known as the Night Stalker, was no easy feat for filmmaker Tiller Russell. The director/producer knew he would have to respect the victims’ trauma while showcasing Ramirez’s crimes, which were extremely violent in nature. By anchoring the story in the perspective of Gil Carrillo, one of the detectives who helped solve the case, he was able to carefully craft the Netflix docuseries, “Night Stalker: The Hunt for a Serial Killer,” set to the tone of Hollywood noir.
“Had I not met Gil or Frank, I would’ve never done the story,” Russell said. “It was their experience of it that anchored me to it. Frank and Gil were this odd couple of detectives who had this journey which you can tell...

The new Starz documentary series Confronting a Serial Killer is captivating, immersive and infuriating. One of the first things we learn is how victims are parsed through the criminal justice system. On the scale of homicide priorities, “pretty white college students are the most dead, black hookers are the least dead.”
Because it tells a story about an under-represented and largely dismissed cross-section of the community, Confronting a Serial Killer focuses on the victims. Even the journalist spearheading the investigation is a survivor. Putting a human face and voice to statistics is a slowly growing trend in true crime coverage. It was recently done in Peacock Originals’ John Wayne Gacy: Devil in Disguise. But the Killer Clown is one of the most recognizable names in the history of homicide. While Samuel Little may have racked up a higher body count, his is a lesser-known name.
Little extinguished 93 lives over four decades.

For decades, the legend surrounding John Wayne Gacy has seemed solidified: After almost 30 bodies were found buried in his Chicago home, the story emerged that following a brutal childhood, he had been abducting and sexually assaulting teenage boys and young men for years all around Chicagoland. It was facilitated by his standing within the community, the care with which he picked victims who he thought might not be missed, and his propensity to put others at ease. He sometimes dressed as Pogo the Clown to entertain children; this didn’t...

John Wayne Gacy: Devil in Disguise is a deep dive into one of the most compelling and confounding serial killers in American history. Known as the Killer Clown, John Wayne Gacy assaulted and murdered at least 33 young men and boys between 1972 and his arrest on Dec. 21, 1978.
Peacock’s original six-part docuseries doesn’t limit coverage to the infamous headliner. The victims receive full and detailed histories. Journalists discuss Gacy’s impact on the news. The NBC News Studios documentary team interviews the investigators on the case, and family members of the victims. They also interview Gacy’s sister Karen Kuzma. The highlight of the project is a 1992 interview Gacy gave to FBI profiler Robert Ressler. Aside from a few minutes of excerpts, this is the first time the interview has been shown in public.

Director Rod Blackhurst never set out to become a true crime documentarian. “As a director I’ve always been what I call ‘genre agnostic,” he told IndieWire. For him, it’s about finding a story worth telling and that can add to a larger conversation. In the case of his latest work, Peacock’s “John Wayne Gacy: Devil in Disguise,” Blackhurst saw an opportunity to show a different facet of the infamous serial killer’s story that is highly relevant to today.
Blackhurst came to the project knowing little more than Gacy’s name. “[I had] kind of a cursory knowledge of what had transpired in the ’70s. The fact that I knew anything at all came from pop culture, listening to music in the mid-’90s and having seen the way John Gacy[‘s] name had been co-opted by the musician, Marilyn Manson,” he said. John Wayne Gacy was one of the most notorious serial killers in U.S. history, having killed at least 33 young men and boys. Yet two investigators who worked on the case told TheWrap they didn’t actually “hate” the man known as the “Killer Clown.”
Michael Albrecht, an investigator who was part of Gacy’s surveillance unit, and retired Des Plaines, Ill., police officer Rafael Tovar spoke to TheWrap ahead of Thursday’s premiere of the Peacock series “John Wayne Gacy: Devil in Disguise.”
“I didn’t hate Gacy after this,” Albrecht, who was present when Gacy drew his infamous diagram of where his victims’ bodies were located, said, adding that people “gravitated” toward him. “I almost felt guilty about that. And I certainly wanted justice served for 33 people. The one thing about Gacy, when we interviewed him, there was never any remorse at all. He talked about it just...

(Spoiler alert: Do not read on if you don’t want to know what happens in “John Wayne Gacy: Devil in Disguise.”)
John Wayne Gacy will go down as one of the most notorious serial killers in American history, balancing a life of clowning, contracting and torturing and killing young men before burying them under his house.
Peacock’s new series “John Wayne Gacy: Devil in Disguise” takes a deeper look at the killer clown and the confirmed 33 lives he took (investigators believe there were more victims in other states due to his travels as part of his contracting work). He would often lure victims into working for him, take them to his house and force handcuffs on them as part of a magic trick, then rape and torture them until strangling them with a garrote.
