Close but no cigar.
sgalleguillosv21 August 2023
Millar's original core idea remains (it's one of my favorite books of his) but execution is all over the place.

Some performances are very weak, but it's understandable given how weird dialog and pacing are. Some dialog feels very unnatural and forced. Like the writer is trying to make a point as fast as possible instead of making characters get to the point by talking to each other like actual human beings. It feels rushed, desperate to get to a point not minding HOW it gets there.

Even though is poorly written, premise is captivating enough to get you attention, but that's all Millar, not the show-runners. Some characters are very likable (Tuka, Wagner), but other are very cartoon-y (pretty much every antagonist)

Cinematography is great.

Worse than I expected
jotampedro25 August 2023
Sorry but this series is pretty poor in every way.

Even knowing that it is a fictional series, the events are not at all credible.

I found myself thinking if it were really possible this would be how the story unfold?

After half a dozen episodes I felt that the forward button is my best friend, and you don't miss much after all.

Maybe the kids enjoy this kind of series but for adults I think this is a comedy!

I saw Messiah and it was so much better than this one.

Well in my opinion this is a kind of series that in one year you will not remember that you saw it.

Well Netflix has these things!

Warning: Spoilers
Touching journey of a young man's epic to find out who and what he is. I like how the religious stuff mirrored Biblical stuff in such a persistent way that it made me forget my evil forebodings early on in the series. I agree that the last scene of the series was rushed and forced. Especially for something that's supposed to be the payoff. I did care about his relationship with Magda and with his mom. I liked that he makes pastor Cruz make up with his brother/sister. I love the Tuka character and feel like that character was so pure that he should have been able to pick up our any evil, but he didn't. Curious to see a season 2! Loved the settings and beautiful cinematography. The gorgeous cove and the haunting salt fields.

I liked it but...

Warning: Spoilers
I really liked it but...

...the moral of the Netflix story: don't trust the white man with the blue eyes.

Und die Moral von der Netflix Geschicht: traue dem weißen Mann mit den blauen Augen nicht!

Other than that, I really liked the series. The characters are compelling. The dynamic between the children is believable. Meanwhile the tension eases a bit. Therefore only 6 out of 10 stars.

Unfortunately, like many other Netflix films and series, this hides a veiled message. People, predominantly white men with blue eyes, are deeply evil. They are not to be trusted or have a ruse in mind. I think those affected rightly feel discriminated against.

A beautiful, compelling series but its beauty and potential ruined in the last 15 minutes
tommatthews-7594023 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Right off the bat, I was totally mesmerized by this show. The entire cast is incredible, great chemistry between the actors, absolutely gorgeous cinematography, and for an American like me, found the setting of rural Baja Mexico and representation of tribal customs fascinating. The series, up into the last 15 minutes, had an almost dream-like beauty and uniqueness.

SPOILERS AHEAD

While the first two episodes were a bit of a slow burn, the cinematography and compelling and believable cast made it an enjoyable watch. Also, it was so refreshing to find directors and writers have respect for people of faith and their practices, even if things eventually take a dark turn. As someone who knows a thing or two about Christianity, I was able to pick up on subtle things that hinted that some things were amiss (such as the girls washing the feet of the "Miracle Boy" when, if he was the messiah, should have been the other way around) but I think secular people will still find the story engrossing.

I was enthralled thinking this was a wonderful, coming-of-age story about a young boy navigating the complexities of being the chosen the one, but it all falls apart in the last 15 minutes. The plot "twist" ruined what could have been an uplifting sentimental story into a very unoriginal, cliche twist that has been done so many times before (The Omen, Messiah, the recent Netflix film Eli, and scores of other shows). So, all that good will that was developed between the wonderful friendships, reconciliation, forgiveness was more of less shattered. Besides that, the last 15 minutes was such a radical departure from the beauty and poetry of what came before that I thought I accidentally hit the remote control and was watching some entirely unrelated random show. It was clunky, poorly paced, seemed rushed, and completely lacked the grace and beauty of what came before. It just seemed so random and out of place like some other set of film makers just tacked it on to the end.

Afterwards, I found out this was based on a comic book series so I guess the writers and directors were boxed in by the source material. Too bad. I could think of several alternative endings that would have made it a beautiful, poignant, and uplifting work such as Jodie reluctantly going off on his own to further ponder his destiny and slowly becoming more responsible and powerful (in a good way) while dealing with society's mistrust and suspicion; or maybe a deeper character dive where Jodie wrestles with being mature and responsible versus engaging in the joyous impulsiveness of childhood; or what could have been a great twist and still kept it uplifting and positive tone was maybe finding out Jodie was more of a John the Baptist type of person while Tuka was shown to be the real second coming. Instead, I got a cliche and downer of a plot twist I've seen a hundred times. It shattered all the beauty, friendship, goodwill, and themes of redemption that was built up over 5 and a half episodes and kind of made you say "what was the point of all that? " In addition, I now have to wait 18 -24 months (provided Netflix renews) to find a truly, angelic character (who is the next major character in the comic book series) that I can feel good about liking.

Good enough, could be better
luka-novak7818 March 2024
I haven't read the comics the series is based on so I can't say anything about the changes and whether they are good or not.

The pacing is a bit slow, entire thing could easily be trimmed by an ep if not two. When things start to happen certain suspension of disbelief is required, mostly about how and why this is contained to this small Mexican town, geography seems a bit of of whack and too many relationships are forced and don't make much sense.

The growth of main characters, his doubts and coming to grips with what's happening is done well enough. If some characters are cliches and act in cliche ways for such a story is forgivable.

It's good entertainment that doesn't delve too deeply into matters of faith and so it doesn't get bogged down there nor does it raise any controversial issues.

What a gem
mvscatmusic18 August 2023
I'm not sure why the review score is so low but this tv series was amazing. I went in with zero expectations and came out wanting a season 2. I have never written a review but this definitely deserves one in hopes more people discover this gem on Netflix.

I gave it a 9/10 only because I wished it was a bit longer( which is a good thing). The ending sets up for a possible second season and the story definitely would be amazing as it was in season one. The characters are likeable and don't make any stupid decisions. There is no modern day politics or agendas just a great story with a great cast.

It's ok but...
fromcafl19 August 2023
I didn't choose this but was willing to give it a shot. The director tries to get a little too artsy and didn't do proper research into what he's trying to portray. One example is the pastor of the evangelical church is shown with a JW book while firing up the crowd. If you can get past poor directing choices and a convoluted storyline then it's good for some passive entertainment I guess. And the first two episodes are difficult to get through but you have to get to them to get to the somewhat entertaining parts. And we're supposed to be ok with a twelve year old making out with a girl in her room... Just overall weird.

Don't believe the bad ratings
olivier-cousinie22 August 2023
Apparently the bigots are out for blood and give this show bad reviews for a few kissing scenes between two 13-year olds. Honestly some people Need to chill out! This was an excellent series, stellar acting and such a fascinating plot! Give it a chance and you'll like it or even love it! I didn't have many expectations when I started watching and now I'm so upset it's already over. I do hope the show gets renewed as the finale leaves a lot of room for a new storyline. Do yourself a favor, ignore all the nasty reviews and watch this series as you won't be disappointed, even gave me the chills.!

Fore sight could have been better
coatesmichael-7711924 August 2023
I usually have a rule of 4 episodes to give something a go, this is 6 so thought I'd go the whole hog.

It took over a week to watch the 6 episodes, not because they are over lengthly or I had personal commitments.

The each episode seemed to give a direction of the plot an state where it was going, that was fine for the first 3, which built a coming of age supernatutal belief. After that it seemed like the writers decided ah well let's throw another idea in with no development, then drop within 5 minutes of viewing.

This review will be short but I will do another that calls out all the aspects which will be spoilers that meant, a really good comic could have been made great.

Interesting
maruma-111753 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I watched the whole thing. It was a good story but there were just a couple of things I didn't like. I found the whole Jodie/Magda romance appalling. They took things way too far considering that the actors are actual children. Both of them are only 14.

The other thing I didn't like was Angelo's public whipping. I can't believe they would display such savagery against a child.

I realize that things might be different in Mexico but Netflix is worldwide and they should know better.

Like I said, it was a good story but it would have been better without the romance and the whipping. Those things were not necessary.

Good But Mostly Fantasy
inerdylatino11 September 2023
The movie is good, but all overall it's fantasy / it's a kids play movie lol. Jodie uses his own "miracles" for his own benefits and we know that Jesus would not do such a thing. He used profanity language which no true follower of God uses. He does not even read the Bible. Female followers start to follow him and "kiss" him since he has the power. It's amazing to see how if a man has power, then females follow him... lol. Overall, it's a kid movie which does not relate to anything in the Bible. Nice fictional movie tho. I'd recommend for people who are non-believers, but not for true believers.

"Stranger Things" Mexican Version In The Theme Of The Divine!
folk_egm17 August 2023
The Chosen One (el elegido) The Mexican series based on the American comic by Mark Millar consists of a total of 6 episodes. It follows the story of a 12-year-old child who discovers they possess powers akin to Jesus Christ. What will happen in their life?

In summary, this series is a brilliantly crafted adaptation from a comic, featuring a storyline with intricately developed characters much like a Mexican version of Stranger Things. Every actor delivers an impressive performance, and the narrative unfolds in a unique and captivating way, filled with excitement and complexity that persists even in its conclusion. Highly recommended not to be missed, especially for fans of the writer Mark Millar.

Fascinating And terrifying
benjaastuopa16 August 2023
A series that from the first second keeps you attentive And it manages to cause in you the anxiety of wanting to know what is happening, it manages to maintain a constant rhythm and a dialogue that does not bore you at all. From the first chapter you can see the wonderful and paranormal world that awaits you, a world without being created by cgi Making us empathize with the people of the town and satisfy the curiosity of what would happen if something like this happened in real life and the social impact that this would have on the people, in this case the people of the small town. Without a doubt a series that is worth watching!!

Fantastic!
cheristewart24 September 2023
I'm glad I ignored the low ratings. Probably people who didn't get past the first few episodes or have issues with the way religion is portrayed. But the acting was top notch and the story was engaging. The climactic scene gave me full-body goosebumps. Something I rarely remember experiencing from a show. And the twist had me reevaluating everything that came before. The last few minutes were weird, but that didn't diminish the impact of the story for me.

I am hoping there is a second season On the way to tie in some of the less fleshed out characters and concepts introduced. I'd definitely watch it!

Worth a watch, but don't expect too much.
cverwey17 August 2023
As an English speaker I don't often watch foreign language shows with subtitles, but I decided to give this one a watch. I'm glad I did. Sure, the dialogue, at times, was horrific and some of the effects were a little questionable. The story was pretty good, although mostly predictable. The young cast was able to portray emotion at key moments that caught me off guard and was really impressive. The ending was exceptionally well filmed and is worth watching all 6 episodes for. Except for the final moments which felt rushed and could almost been from a completely different series. I will definitely watch the next season if there is one, if only to see where they take the story next.

One of those series which will make you wanting for more!
jaysoras17 September 2023
I had nothing good left to watch so just clicked the title and after 1st episodes we are all binging . Brilliantly plotted, Excellent Cinematography, Very good acting by every character. No BS straight to the point except for the last 10 minutes where everything is rushed like crazy. I feel the last 10 minutes should have been kept for the end of season 2 instead because its a lot to digest suddenly but we still liked it. It had to have epic ending. But overall this was worth watching and now we cant wait for Season 2 . Hope Netflix renews it soon. Ignore the bad ratings and just start watching , you wont regret it. This one is easily 7+ rating show.

Better than I expected
sameeraamarasekara17 August 2023
Didn't have high hopes about the show since I'm not a big fan of religious faith. But after 1st episode I was hooked & couldn't stop watching. This show has bit of Stranger Things vibe to it, too bad it's only 6 episodes (Well crafted episodes I must say). Young cast was incredible at portraying so many emotions, which is impressive since all of them seems to be new to acting, Can't wait for the next season but since this show is on Netflix I highly doubt it will happen cause they are keep cancelling good shows & renewing S*** shows. Either way this show is something you should see just to see that exploding season finale.....

Absolutely FANTASTIC
gertster221 September 2023
Ok, I don't write many reviews but this show deserves praise (oops, no pun intended). Here's how I feel, if you may be upset by religion being the theme of a piece of fiction please don't watch them and then give bad ratings. People's beliefs are just that, beliefs. As a non-believer, I was very much entertained by the evolution of this story. It needed to take place where it did because none of what happened is possible in America. It was perfectly set. The character building was great, the twists great, the suspense, the emotion, the cinematography, camera work, and location all great. Highest of quality. Top marks for music! The score and soundtrack is so awesome I will def watch this again just to feel it all again! The acting was fantastic and the big climactic scene... just WOW. Ending was very well done. There were some comments about the white blue eyed man message and in my opinion it isn't a message, it's projection. It's also not a Netflix story. White men have done a good enough job demonizing themselves than tv and films do. There are lots of movies about the chosen one, messiahs, angels, demons, good vs evil but this was actually thought all the way out to the very end and didn't fall apart at any stage of the story. It was crafted by gifted storytellers. I hope you watch it. Some more details to keep people who may not appreciate it from leaving bad reviews is that it's basically a young adult piece. All of the main characters are 12. They are likable and they all care about each other. There is some teen romance and underage drinking. There are weird scenes of a voice whispering to Jodie, lots of flashbacks, and some 'oh come on' moments but it was all part of the ride. And one more thing, I really wish people would enjoy tv and film a little more by not trippin out so much on how realistic everything needs to be. Just remember Movie Phone guys voice, "In a world...." and then allow the creators to take you there.

An absolute sensation
nicolastheo-5047423 August 2023
"The Chosen One" based in Baja California, Mexico was a complete masterpiece including exciting, suspenseful and stomach wrenching moments. It is a cinematic masterpiece and is still wildly overlooked after it's unexpected success. Do you like Stranger Things?, then you'll love this as it embodies the fantastic themes of Stranger Things and expands them into a whole to world. It brought new perspectives into the world of TV Shows and Netflix had a brilliant idea with this and were able to bring it to life. Wagner, has a bright future in the world of acting and I hope he is able to land a job soon enough because he was extremely underrated. I can't wait for future seasons.

Amazing story! I hope they do the 2nd and 3rd seasons!
poson-679482 September 2023
I watched it once and gave it 7 stars. I watched it a second time and I feel I have to give it a 9. I don't give it a 10 because it's not a great production and the editing and acting could have been better.

The Chosen One is an amazing, original story. Hundreds of movies and tv shows have been made about this topic, but this one is completely out of the ordinary. It's definitely a memorable story. The story starts with very little tension, and that increases steadily until the last few minutes of the last episode!

The use of music is very clever, as it reflects the feeling of the characters at the time and not the reality behind what's really happening, so nothing is too obvious; not to Jodie and definitely not to the audience. So you don't need to blame yourself if you couldn't connect the dots, although you had all the clues! This makes this series extra memorable.

The kids' performance is brilliant, to the point that they made me cry laugh and cry with them. Juanito Anguamea (Tuka) and Alberto Pérez-Jácome (Wagner), in special, were amazing. The adults, on the other hand, felt a little flat. I think that of Dianna Agron, in particular, because she was playing a key character (Jodie's mom Sarah), which really needed to be on point. I would also blame her for Bobby Luhnow (Jodie)'s poor performance in some scenes playing opposite to her.

This series deeply touched me and the story will be in my memory forever. I learned that this is only 1 part of a 3 part story originally published as comics. I hope they do a 2nd and 3rd season to tell the rest of the story.

mesmerizing
skrelunas6 October 2023
I watched the entire series except for a little bit of episode two. I was mesmerized, drawn into each scene and full of dread and excitement at different times. The composition of each scene was stunning, all the details and lighting captured the mood. The flow from interior scenes to exterior scenes was flawless, even the exterior lighting was flawless and realistic. Surprises arose throughout the series and even at the end. There were very few moments in which I said, "I knew that would happen" . There was never a moment in which I thought this was enough. It is a "must" that you watch until the credits roll at the end of the last episode.

The Chosen One': Where Divinity Meets Reality
drhemp29 August 2023
I watched "The Chosen One" in one sitting, which speaks volumes about how much it pulled me in. The show was recommended to me because of my fondness for Netflix's "Messiah," directed by James McTeigue and written by Michael Petroni. Although "The Chosen One" doesn't have the budget of "Messiah," which I absolutely loved, it tells the story exceptionally well through great writing, setting, and acting.

Although the pacing is slow in the initial episodes, this is a minor flaw in an otherwise compelling series.

Set in a small Mexican town, the story revolves around a young teenager who discovers he possesses powers reminiscent of Jesus Christ. While he's flattered by his sudden acclaim as the "Second Coming," he also grapples with typical teenage experiences.

The show is beautifully shot, and the 4:3 aspect ratio is a nostalgic nod to its '90s setting, enhancing the viewing experience. Kudos to child actor Bobby Luhnow, who delivers a spellbinding performance, adding layers of complexity to his character. The script is thoughtfully written and leaves room for a sequel-something I'm eagerly awaiting.

Overall, "The Chosen One" deserves a higher rating and a second season.

A masterpiece!!!
kikosn27 August 2023
I am a non-believer, and as I was shocked by the movie "The Last Temptation" so in this case I watched it in ecstasy. Masterpiece. If it was a movie, it would definitely win an Oscar for Best Picture and Best Cinematography. The series is amazing with deep meanings and allegories and is very well structured. I've had years of being so into it and not being able to stop watching.

Luckily I didn't mind the low score which I rarely do.

I didn't like the last 10 minutes either but I cried in the previous 10 minutes and that doesn't detract from the overall value of the series. I rate it 9 out of 10. Big gem. Well done.
