- In the Sierra Maerstra Mountains on October 16, 1962, alarm goes off. The radar shows something coming in fast, and the technician and his superior run out and find a pod. A tentacle moves inside, and the commandante goes to sound the alarm that the invasion has begun.
On Waverider, the alarm goes off and Gideon confirms that it didn't do it. The AI says that Mick did it, and Nate runs into Zari in the hallway. He says that she looks just like his Zari, and she offers to change her hairstyle if it would help.
Mick calls everyone to the bridge, and Spooner finds Behrad passed out from the marijuana-based gummies he had Gideon make for him.
Ava arrives on the bridge, and Mick tells her that she got a hit on the alien that abducted Sara. The photos were redacted in the files that he found of the alien sketch he had. The others arrive, and Mick says that the pod is spotted in 1962. He sends Waverider there before they can stop to pick up Astra and John.
In 1962 Cuba, Mick, Ava, Spooner, Nate, and Zari head off through the jungle to where the pod crashed. Mick steps out and flame an approaching military truck until it stops, and Mick knocks the Russian soldiers out of the cab. Spooner grabs an AR-47 and opens fire on the other vehicles in the convoy, and the soldiers in them stop and open fire. Nate steels up and attacks them, Spooner gets in the back of the truck, and the others get in as Mick drives off.
Down the road, Mick stops so they can check out the "loot". They open the crate in the back and find a warhead for a Russian missile. They realize that Mick dropped them in the middle of the Cuban Missile Crisis, and Ava realizes that Mick forgo5t to cloak Waverider.
At the White House, General Kilgore tells John F. Kennedy that surveillance photos have picked up Waverider, and Kilgore figures that the Soviets have a new bomber.
Back on Waverider, Gideon tells Ava that JFK has called a briefing of his superiors. Nate did his doctoral thesis on the Crisis, and wants to go to DC. Zari in costume joins them along with Behrad, and Ava tells Behrad to stay with them. They go to the pod, where Mick and Spooner tell them that they confirmed the Cubans are transporting the pod to Castro's secret bunker. Ava takes control from Mick, and she tells Behrad to come with her. She says that Mick and Spooner are too hot-header, and when Mick objects, Ava tells him to get the missile back to the Russian and they're job is to protect history/
Ava and Behrad go to the bunker and Ava claims that she's a Russian consultant. Behrad says that the reason they're there is classified, and Ava says that she specializes in extraterrestrial creatures. The commandante immediately takes her in.
Mick and Spooner drive the missile and come to Cuban soldiers, and Mick radios Ava to ask for permission to shoot their way out of a sticky situation. She refuses and tells him to avoid an international incident. Spooner does the talking.
The Cuban soldiers find the missile, and Spooner claims that they found it the jungle and were taking it to Russians. The soldiers want to take it themselves, and say that the North Americans have begun a mutant invasion. The leader orders Spooner and Mick to follow them, and Spooner has no choice but to agree. She tells Mick that she liked it better when he was in charge.
Nate and Zari go to the White House, and Nate plans to go in posing as an International expert. Kilgore comes out and tells Zari to make some coffee. JFK joins them and Nate poses as a Harvard man. They go into the Oval Office and JFK introduces Nate to his brother Robert and the rest of his brain trust. Once the introductions are done, JFK says that Kilgore wants to upgrade their nuclear readiness to DEFCON 3.
Nate dismisses Waverider as a mock-up. When Kilgore asks what Nate's credentials are, Nate spots JFK's football from his college days and convinces JFK that if there's a nuclear exchange, both sides lose.
Ava and Behrad arrive in a lab where a Cuban doctor is preparing to vivisect the alien. Ava has no choices but to play along, and she tells Behrad that she's stalling until she can come up with another plan. Behrad tells her that he doesn't like blood, and Sara makes a tiny incision that oozes white blood. Behrad runs out to throw up, poses as a guard, and comes to a restricted area. The guard mistakes Behrad for Che Guevara, and takes him to Castro. Behrad tells Castro that he's Che's cousin, Jay, and Castro accepts his story and says that they will fight the Americans' mutant invasion.
Zari brings the brain trust company and says that she has Ambassador Popov on the phone. JFK takes the call, and Popov says that their Russian missile was stolen by a "steel man". JFK assumes that Popov has been drinking, and tells the others what Popov said.
The brain trust discusses the situation, including the photos the Russians took of Nate. JFK figures that it's a fake, but Kilgore says that NARPA has been developing a program. Kilgore suggests that they launch a provocative attack, tells JFK that he's calling the shots, and JFK tells Kilgore to move them one step closer to nuclear war.
Ava cuts a nitrous oxide line loose, and everyone starts giggling. Ava tells the Cuban surgeon who she really is and why she's there, and the surgeon passes out.
Castro tells Behrad that he has a nuclear missile as a secret weapon, and is done being pawn in the game between the Americans and Russians. He says that he will wipe DC off the face of the earth, and takes some of Behrad's marijuana candy, thinking it's real candy.
Ava returns the operating theater and finds the other surgeons passed out. She wheels the alien out on a gurney.
Mick and Spooner take the missile to the Cuban camp, and Spooner's implant goes off, informing her of aliens nearby. She figures her powers are getting strong, and she can tell that it's pissed as she sees Ava through its eyes.
The alien wakes up and jumps off the gurney, and comes after Ava. He slaps her aside with one of his tentacles, and Mick drives it off with his fire gun. He and Spooner take Ava out.
Castro gets high and figures that if he can force the Soviets out of country, he can take all of their missiles. Castro insists that Behrad play him a song on his guitar, and Behrad plays 'Peace Train'.
Kilgore takes the military to DEFCON 3.
The Russians prepare to launch on DC.
When Behrad finishes his song, Castro breaks into tears and wants to Call JFK, figuring the only way is love. He opens the door and finds the alien there, and Behrad closes the door with a blast from his totem. Castro snaps out of his mood, and calls to tell his soldiers to prepare to launch the missiles.
Mick and Spooner take Ava to the Waverider medbay for her injuries. Behrad calls to tell them that Castro thinks the alien was sent to kill him, because the alien tried to kill him. Castro is also preparing to launch the nuke at DC. Mick and Spooner tell Ava that they gave the Cubans the nuclear missile, and Ava hopes that cooler heads are prevailing in DC.
Kilgore gets a report that Castro has a nuke being fueled, and JFK starts to crack and considers ordering orders his family to Hyannis Port. Nate tries to suggest it's a misunderstanding, but Kilgore insists that their only defense is to attack Russia. JFK tells Kilgore to take them to DEFCON 2. Tari offers to type the instructions into the teletype, and JFK tells her that they should take any retaliatory steps against Russia, if Cuba attacks DC. Nate asks why Castro is attacking DC, and tells him that the alien attacked Castro and Behrad is with Castro.
Castro gets a call from Che Guevara, and mentions that "Jay" is there. Behrad breaks out with the totem and runs, and Castro yells at him to tell the CIA to call back their alien or he'll launch the nuke. Ava, listening in, tells Mick that he's back in charge and they have to kill the alien and get history back on chance. Mick, angry, says that if they kill the alien then they'll lose any chance of getting Sara back. Mick objects, saying that he's just a goon good for killing people, and Ava agrees. Taken aback, Mick says that at least now he knows where he stands and leaves.
Mick and Spooner go to find the alien in the base, and Spooner can sense that it's looking for something. She asks if Mick is going back to a dumb drunk, and he says that he is. They find the alien at the nuke, and Spooner can sense that it wants to get off Earth.
Mick approaches the alien and tells it that it won't get a ride home on the missile. It grabs Mick by the neck, and he tells it to eat him but it won't get home. Spooner aims her gun at the alien, and Mick tells the alien that he has his own spaceship. Translating, Spooner says that alien wants its own spaceship, not Waverider. The alien drops Mick, and Mick says that he'll take it to Waverider if it helps him find Sara. It speaks through Spooner, warning that it's a long trip.
Castro launches the missile, and insists that history will absolve him.
Kilgore discovers that Zari has been countermanding his orders, draws his guns, and tells JFK to launch a nuclear submarine commander and launch its missile. Nate tells JFK that the Russians don't want a nuclear war any more than he does. Robert confirms via the teletype that the Cubans have launched a missile, JFK wants to call Khrushchev to negotiate. Kilgore says that he's soft and he'll launch the missiles himself. Nate steels up and tells Kilgore that he's there to protect the world from people like Kilgore. Kilgore threatens Tari instead and prepares to use the nuclear football to launch the missiles.
JFK, Nate, and the Harvard brain trust line up against Kilgore and his three men to take the football back. Kilgore tries to pass it, and Zari uses her totem to send it to JFK. His back gives up and Nate catches intercepts it before Kilgore grabs it. Nate gives it to JFK, and Kilgore tells JFK that he still has time to strike back. Nate says that the Cuban launch was a mistake, and they don't have to take the world with them if they're going to die. JFK agrees with Nate and stops the launch of the American missiles. Nate tells Zari that they're about to die.
Kilgore yells that he's not going to go out with a fight, draws his gun, and runs out. Nate and Zari holds hands, as the missile heads for DC. Out on the lawn, Kilgore opens fire on the missile, and it slams down on him... but doesn't explode. Robert tells JFK that he saved them all, and Nate joins them.
Later on Waverider, Ava is drinking and Gideon reports an unusual level of radiation,. Ava realizes that mick is responsible.
Mick, Spooner, and the alien are heading down the hallway. After shoving Spooner off the ship, Mick and the alien go to the bridge and find Ava there. The alien hooks a "turbo charger" to the controls, and Mick tells Ava that he doesn't trust the alien so he's going alone with it. Ava tells Mick that he's got it, hugs him, and asks him to bring Sara back.
Nate and Zari teleport back to Waverider, and find that the spaceship is gone. Zari realizes that she looks like his Zari again. He says that she just reminds her of herself.
Behrad comes to the site, and finds Ava, Nate, and Zari. Spooner comes up and complains that Mick stole Waverider. Ava explains what happened, and Behrad is relieved that he has his candy. They figure that they'll stay at John's house, and he'll hate it.
On Waverider, Mick tells the alien to keep its tentacles off his beer. It uses a device to appear human, and as Kayla asks Mick if he has anything stronger than beer on board. Kayla takes his beer and chugs it, much to Mick's bemusement.
