Hey there. My name's Ed and I've been writing the TV ratings blog SpottedRatings.com for about two and a half years now. Starting this season, I'll be doing a "Ratings Five-Spot" post each week for SpoilerTV, breaking down the five biggest developments of the past week in the world of TV ratings.
We'll get our first ratings results from the new broadcast season a little later today, but I thought I'd get warmed up by looking back at the "pre-premiere week," when some of the shows premiere early to get a head start on the full-fledged competition. Here are the five big developments from last week:
CW's Premieres - As usual, the CW elected to premiere most of its new shows before the traditional broadcast premiere week begins. Last week saw the heavily hyped premieres of their new shows Ringer and The Secret Circle. So far... nothing too special either way.

Mischa Barton has been used to endorse a sex toy. TMZ has recently uncovered that the actress playing Sonja Stone on the short-lived "The Beautiful Life: Tbl" has had her face being featured on a box of a vibrating, ring-shaped sex toy which can only be bought in rural China.
Representative for the former star of "The O.C.", however, was quick to put off any speculation that may be caused by the placement of her photo on the package. Asked whether the actress has a line of sex toys on the Asian market, the rep told the gossip site, "Um. No. She's not endorsing any such toy."
Mischa has recently shared that she is not rushing to get back on TV. In a recent interview with Zap2It, the 25-year-old said, "TV is not something that I'm looking at right now for a second, just because I'm really at a restful place in my life.

The CW's Hellcats kicked off the broadcast networks' fall TV season with a meow rather than a roar.
Fall TV Popularity Contest: What did you think of Hellcats and Terriers?
The cheerleading drama drew a solid-if-not-stellar 3 million viewers and a 1.2 rating in the adults 18-to-49 demographic, according to overnight Nielsen estimates. Predictably, the show's rating improved to 1.4 among the CW's target demo of adults 18-to-34.
However, the premiere did improve slightly over its America's Next Top Model lead-in, which drew 2.9 million viewers in its lowest-rated premiere ever. Hellcats also doubled the numbers of The Beautiful Life: Tbl, the quickly canceled series that debuted in that timeslot last year...

Mischa Barton is kicking off her career comeback with a healthy new lifestyle - she has quit drinking. The former "The O.C." star admitted to hitting "rock bottom" when she was placed on involuntary psychiatric hold last summer, July 2009, following the cancellation of her TV series "The Beautiful Life: Tbl".
The meltdown, which Barton blamed on botched dental surgery, came two years after she was charged with driving under the influence, stemming from a December 2007 arrest in Los Angeles. But the actress is determined to turn her career around and clean up her act and she's starting her health kick by giving up booze.
She says, "I'm being healthy and working hard. I have had lots of offers coming in and as well as reading through scripts, I'm also designing my own range of bags. I love England and I've been desperate to get here to see my friends and my boyfriend,...

A new trailer of "Hellcats" called "Athletes" has been uncovered, emphasizing on two opposite perspectives of what cheerleaders are. While Marti Perkins, a young, pre-law student, calls them a bunch of groupies, Savannah Monroe, a petite, peppy Texan, proudly says they are "internationally-recognized competitive sports", or in another word "athletes".
Marti is cool, hip and alt, but her world flips upside down, literally and figuratively, when she loses her scholarship, and realizes the only way she can stay in school is by reigniting her dormant teen gymnastic skills to win a place on Lancer's legendary cheerleading team, The Hellcats. Against her every instinct, Marti goes for it and makes the squad, and is thrust into a world of camaraderie, backstabbing and the intersection of sports, backroom academia and big money.

Tortorella has previously appeared on television shows The Beautiful Life: Tbl and Make It or Break It, and appears in the upcoming Joel Schumacher film Twelve. No information has been revealed about Tortorella's character, but we assume he might have nabbed the role of a character named Trevor Sheldon, described in the casting calls as: “Handsome high school jock, but quiet and intense, as though a secret hangs over his head." All of the casting announcements thus far have been either females or older men, so it seems likely this is his role in the film. After the jump we have some new information about the new characters in the film, gleamed...

The CW said during its presentation on Thursday, May 20 that its new series will attract more men into its women-oriented programs. With the absence of "Melrose Place" and "The Beautiful Life: Tbl", the network is able to slip in "Nikita" and "Hellcats". These two are very different in terms of their genre and target audience.
"Nikita", starring Maggie Q, is a spy action about a troubled teenager who was secretly trained as a spy and an assassin without her knowledge. Now, after three years in hiding, Nikita is seeking retribution and making it clear to her former bosses that she will stop at nothing to expose and destroy their covert operation.
"It's like watching an action movie every week," said Dawn Ostroff, the CW's president of entertainment, adding later, "I think it will appeal to men and women." After the presentation was wrapped up, head of sales ad Rob Tuck said,...

"The Beautiful Life," formerly just a footnote to the 2009-10 TV season, is now a bona fide award winner.
Ok, so the award is for 2009's worst TV, but still. Reincarnation crime drama "Past Life" has moved on to the TV afterlife.
Fox canceled the struggling and widely panned show after only three episodes, making "Past Life" the 10th series to get the ax in what's been a relatively bloodless season for broadcasters.
It's been six months since the networks launched their fall lineups, and the five broadcasters have each dumped only about two shows on average.
Fox and ABC have jettisoned the most with three titles each. In addition to "Past Life" -- which was rejected after Thursday night's last-place performance and will be replaced by original episodes of "Kitchen Nightmares" -- Fox canceled comedy "Brothers" and Joss Whedon drama "Dollhouse." Actress Mischa Barton is facing a lawsuit from her landlord over allegations she owes $21,000 in unpaid rent on her New York apartment. In a lawsuit filed on Thursday, January 21, lawyers for property company M.R.A. Realities Inc. claim the former "The O.C." star has ignored continued requests to pay rent for the last three months.
The star rented out the $7,000 -a-month pad in the Big Apple's trendy Tribeca neighborhood on a one-year lease in September 2009. She had planned to stay in the city while filming her now defunct TV show "The Beautiful Life: Tbl". The series was axed the same month. Having just reported getting on "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" cast's nerves, Mischa Barton has fallen into another problem. A New York landlord has filed a lawsuit against the 23-year-old actress claiming she has failed to pay three months worth of rent on her $7,000-a-month New York City apartment.
E! Online reported on Thursday, January 21 that M.R.A. Realties had actually attempted to collect the rent money for the TriBeCa apartment, but their efforts were rebuffed by Barton. Tired of the rude rejection, the company decided to file a lawsuit demanding that the actress does not only pay up the rent but also covers the company's legal fees.

A rep for Mischa Barton has dismissed reports the actress behaved "unprofessionally" while filming a new episode of "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit". The actress, who is playing a prostitute in a guest role on the TV series, allegedly upset cast and crew after repeatedly forgetting her lines while shooting earlier this week, on January 18.
The former "The O.C." star is said to have frustrated her co-star Mariska Hargitay by relying on her for cues to finish their scene. A source tells the New York Daily News, "People close to her were hoping this would get her back on track. But it looks like she's going to need yet another chance."
But a spokesperson for Barton insists there have been no problems: "Everything's going swimmingly on set." Barton's last TV venture, U.S. fashion drama "The Beautiful Life: Tbl", was canceled after just two episodes.

Mischa Barton has drawn criticism for her "unprofessionalism" on the set of "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit". Radar Online reported that a source has claimed the 23-year-old actress annoyed the cast and crew of the NBC crime show when shooting her guest-starring part on Tuesday, January 19.
The Marissa Cooper of "The O.C." reportedly has turned the filming of one scene into a 10-hour day because she kept on messing her lines. "She only had seven lines, seven!" the source told Radar. "Each time she would mess up she would forget her lines and Mariska [Hargitay] kept prompting her and saying 'it's your line Mischa'."
Although the source further noted that Mischa did apologize for every time she made the mistake, the crew only managed to get one scene shot for the entire day of filming. Still, the source added that the star of "The Beautiful Life: Tbl" who brought her little...

Mischa Barton who is no longer attached to "The Beautiful Life: Tbl" since the series was canceled early into the first season, is coming to "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" for a guest starring stint. TV Guide magazine said she will play a hooker named Gladys.
Executive Producer Neal Baer is a personal fan of the actress, hinting on his Twitter the three words that are related to the next guest star, "Bongo", "Singer" and "Austin". In the clarification of the casting news, Baer told TV Guide that it is Barton who has played roles with those last names. "She's gone on to do amazing work both on TV and on the stage," Baer said, adding that the cameo will "surprise" viewers.
On how she would incorporate to the story, TV Guide said, "Mischa's character is hiding a secret that will prove complicating for Mariska Hargitay's Benson." The episode is...

Toward the end of the year, TV shows that are doing well in rating have started getting the pick-up while those that struggle are given the ax. That way, networks would be able to determine which shows would return in midseason and which new shows should replace the canceled ones. Moreover, winners from reality shows such as "Survivor", "Top Chef" and "The Biggest Loser" begin to reveal themselves.

As I first reported in October, Emily Kmetko's first love -- the boy better known to us as "Pizza Guy" (aka Razor) -- is returning to "Make It or Break It" this January.
Nico Tortorella, who plays Razor, was written out of "Miobi" last fall when he landed a starring role on The CW's "The Beautiful Life," but "Miobi" was quick to snatch him back up when "Tbl" was canceled.
What does this mean for Damon, the kid whom Emily fell for while Razor was M.I.A.?
Well, we'll see both boys back on the show this year, but as Chelsea Hobbs and I discuss in the clip below, Damon has left town to focus on his budding music career while Razor is once again at The Pizza Shack with Em.
So are they hooking back up? I asked both Chelsea and Nico about it, and though they're saying they don't know,...

Corbin Bleu has once again shown his compassionate side. On Thursday afternoon, December 24, the co-star of Zac Efron in "High School Musical" series volunteered to serve Christmas Eve lunch at the Los Angeles Mission. For the charity work, the 20-year-old took his father along to help out as well.
Beside being on hand during the event, the Issac of short-lived "The Beautiful Life: Tbl" also raised awareness and donations for the non-profit mission using his Twitter account. Telling his fans how to help out, he tweeted, "Merry Christmas! Thanks for supporting the La Mission Text2Give. Text "Gift" to 40579 to donate $5."
Corbin Bleu is not the only celebrity lending his hands for the serving of the lunch. The Disney actor/singer was joined by Boo Boo Stewart of "The Twilight Saga's Eclipse", Bonnie Hunt of "Cars" and Antonio Villaraigosa, the Los Angeles Mayor.

After managing a scant 1.4 million viewers for its first episode and 1.1 million for its second, The Beautiful Life was axed by The CW in early fall.
But because the series aired against Fox juggernaut Glee, and because producer Ashton Kutcher refuses to believe that so few people would care about something with which he's affiliated, the show is making a unique comback.
As announced by Kutcher himself below, the actor's Katalyst Media will post five episodes of The Beautiful Life online and keep them there for six months.
If the Webisodes receive enough hits, more of them will be produced.

Fans of the season's first-canceled "Tbl: The Beautiful Life" will be able to see all the show's filmed episodes online, according to executive producer Ashton Kutcher.
The CW show was killed after only two episodes aired in September so viewers only got to see the tip of the iceberg that was supermodel-turned-secret-mom Sonja Stone.
The first three episodes of the NYC modeling drama are already on YouTube, including one that was never aired. The remaining two episodes that were filmed will have their debut next week.
