As Holmes and Whitney note, Duleep Singh was the last Maharaja of the Sikh Empire. He was Maharaja Ranjit Singh's youngest son, coming to power aged just 5 in September 1843. On his deposition by the British Crown in the Second Anglo-Sikh War in 1849, he was exiled to Britain at 15, whereupon he became a favourite of
Queen Victoria.
