On Monday, June 20th, Allan Arkush rushes back after spending Two Weeks in Another Town
Director Vincente Minnelli and star Kirk Douglas reunited for this operatic non-sequel followup to their caustic 1952 Hollywood saga The Bad and the Beautiful, now set ten years later in the La Dolce Vita movie world of Rome and based on a novel by Irwin Shaw. Some claim its protagonists are thinly veiled representations of Tyrone Power, Linda Christian and Darryl Zanuck. Extensively recut by the studio, it’s still a deliriousfantasy about Eternal City filmmaking with some memorable sequences and a terrific cast.
On Wednesday, June 22nd, Josh Olson puts 3 On a Match.
The largely forgotten Ann Dvorak sizzles in this snappy 63 minute pre-code Warner Bros. melange of booze, drugs and gambling. Scarface...

"Ralf Huettner's sleeper hit Vincent Wants to Sea was the surprise best picture winner at the 61st German Film Awards, Germany's version of the Oscars." Scott Roxborough from Berlin for the Hollywood Reporter: "Florian David Fitz, who's better known as a TV performer here, won best actor for his starring performance in Vincent as a Tourette's sufferer who, once in his life, wants to see the ocean."
The Lolas, as these awards are called, have three categories for Best Film: Gold, which has gone to Vincent; Silver, which goes this year to Yasemin Samdereli's immigration comedy Almanya, also picking up the screenplay award (which Samdereli shares with her sister, Nesrin); and Bronze, presented to If Not Us, Who?, Andres Veiel's retelling of the love story between Gudrun Ensslin and Bernward Vesper and their breakup when Ensslin enters into her fateful relationship with Andreas Baader.

The Fall TV Season presentations for all the new network shows take place this week with the fifth and final one announced today. Here's a full breakdown of which concepts have made the list over on The CW.
While the "Melrose Place" remake didn't work and the Mischa Barton-led "The Beautiful Life" proved an utter disaster that scored the first axing of the season, the smallest and newest of the networks managed to generate a solid hit for itself with "The Vampire Diaries" and a modest hit in "Life Unexpected" over these past twelve months.
The success was needed as its various dramas like "90210," "One Tree Hill," "Gossip Girl" and "Supernatural" saw dips, while the move of "Smallville" to Friday nights has almost halved its regular audience. Yet most of the shows have scored better reviews this past season and there's a sense that the network may finally be through its worst growing pains.
