Where is the funny?
karuneshmishra-9535928 August 2021
The writers have to totally head up from about police hypocrisy. We are here to laugh!! Bring back all the police office dramas, pranks,.. this season is totally not worth it except the lake house ep.

The other reviews are funny are hypocritical

Warning: Spoilers
They're claiming the episode is too preachy and political yet that's the reason they're upset because the perspective doesn't fit their own.

They say the episode doesn't have humor, they had a great scene of Rosa and Amy getting drunk and switching places both pretending to be Amy, Charles kicking Terry's ass with an apple, and Holt getting "Huffy".

It's ironic to me that they never had an issue when the show portrayed cops as being immaculate and always moral or social critique episodes that made the issues with the police force a minor and uncommon issue.

This isn't the best season of the show but I think they're doing a good job directly addresing the common and systemic issues with law enforcement protecting cops from any punishment while not making all cops look bad.

Holt was not wrong, peralta was right
miguelcesar1 September 2021
Peralta had every right to arrest the guy.

B99 is becoming a political show.

Every episode is about how bad police is.

Why are you doing that?

Why.

It's not a coincidence that the three lowest rated episodes have similar theme
rifqi-1261128 August 2021
I was really looking forward to the last season and somehow it decided to be political without even care about the whole comedy thing that made this show has 8 seasons. I really hope the next four episodes aren't another p00litical ones.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Keanu Reeves
safenoe21 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Seasoned imdb users can measure how explosive or provocative a certain episode is by the massive spike in imdb user votes and imdb user reviews, and The Set Up is no exception, especially in the thought provoking season eight of Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

Anyway, for me the opening scene was hilarious, with Jake's witty references to Speed, Keanu Reeves, Jeff Daniels, and also the punchline of the The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel fan bus which was incredibly funny and made me laugh big time for sure. Anyway, the speech at the end was incredible and emotional and no doubt will trigger spasms of disgust from some.

These types of storylines are going to continue, so deal with it, or stop watching
jarrodhornbeck5 September 2021
The writers of Brooklyn Nine-Nine were totally handcuffed (pun intended) with which direction they could go in writing and completing this season. Honestly, I didn't think the show would continue, because, particularly in urban areas, the relationship between the police and the communities they serve is very tumultuous. Many members of cast members and producers donated to protestors and the National Bail Fund Network. I'm sure just about no one was comfortable with the show continuing what some would consider copaganda, presenting a world in which city police officers are hapless, harmless heroes which grand moral compasses. Yes, there are good cops, but that sort of rebuttal offers nothing to the National conversation. That being said, confronting police violence is something everyone behind the show feels strongly about. So, there are going to be episodes like this where the message is overly pervasive or heavy-handed, and yeah, it's obviously a detriment (to some extent) to the quality. If this is going to bother you so much that you feel compelled to leave 1-star reviews because you don't appreciate having to be made aware of a very real problem with no foreseeable end in sight, then you should probably just stop watching. If you're someone who's been on the fence about watching this season because of the number of exaggeratedly low reviews, just know that the spirit of the show is more or less the same. For about 60% of the episodes, the hijinks ensue, the characters still walk and talk like they did before. If the show was a 9 before all of this stuff went down, it may have dropped to about a 7.5, but it hasn't taken a nose dive or anything.

The Set Up
kaden_lewis3 September 2021
This episode was good, but not the best of the season so far. It still had its Nine-Nine charm, but it had a more serious feel to it, just like the first episode. I didn't mind the more serious tone of both the episodes, but I prefer the classic, fun Brooklyn Nine-Nine. This episode had its funny parts, especially with nine drink Amy, and drunk Rosa switching places talking to O'Sullivan, and he didn't even notice. Then when they went to go talk to Jake, drunk while riding bikes. I busted out laughing every second invoking Amy and Rosa this episode, O'Sullivan is also hilarious, and I hope to see more of him. The ending of the episode sort of got on my nerves, I don't know what it was, I just didn't like the ending.

This was a good episode, it just wasn't the best Can't wait for next week!

Kind of a meh episode, but the ending is good.
ksomogyi-1285427 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Most of the episode is alright, though the twist that O'Sullivan was messing with the candy didn't really land. All was ok, until the ending with Jake & Holt. The little speech Jake did was great. I do kinda wish this episode had a few more laughs.

They used to tell stories that fit in a message. Now they have a message and try to fit in a story.
crocsnosockz29 August 2021
I know police in America need massive reform, I don't need a half hour comedy beating me in the head with that message.

So Predictable
Dog-River27 August 2021
I think we can all agree police should be held accountable for their actions. I agree 100% with that statement. But, the way they're writing this season is like those old after school specials. It is so preachy that it comes off as annoying. It didn't surprise me that they had Jake mess up and be shown an example of this season. I love this show, but this season has been so disappointing. Even the couple of episodes that aren't overly political, are not written as well as the other seasons.

writers needed to ignore politics and actually keep the comedy show funny
xfilesfannumber5 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This show, from seasons 1-7, had such a consistent tone and was always hilarious. Season 8 saw such a dramatic shift. It shoves messages down your throat due to modern politics, but never pulls it off. Its clunky, obvious, and takes the place of the shows humor rather than existing with it. Also, as far as this episode is concerned, Jake shouldn't have been suspended. The man was not wrongfully arrested, he ran from a cop who asked to talk to him. That is cause for arrest, whether you are scared or not.

Great episode with real consequences.
frostednight27 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
It was a fun episode with a true consequences for the characters. Some people aren't going to like this. It plays a little funnier than it probably should for subject matter but does a solid job of addressing it.

People get upset this is political in nature, but the entire season was made in the shadow of George Floyd and what happened last year. What continues to happen. These episodes are the creators reconciling the cop comedy with the realities of policing. So yeah, this episode good and does well at what they are going for. It's not perfect but it's good.

I genuinely think anyone rating this terribly cannot accept the police make wrong decisions and as an institution is flawed. Great episode, really funny too!

I wish they stopped at season 7
agerson2428 August 2021
If the writers didn't feel like they could make this show with the same level of comedy and ridiculousness that made this show great because of the current political climate, then they should have just not made this season and let season 7 finale be the series finale. It's just an entirely different show and I miss the light heartedness and laugh out loud adventures and stories. I can understand how trying to find humor in police actions is probably challenging right now, but since that is the entire premise of the show then they should have just cancelled it to show support as opposed to preach to us ever week.

Not that it is important, but I am a Democrat and this is not me criticizing "woke Hollywood" or whatever the talking point is. They had a recipe for success and this show has been great for 7 years but it just isn't the same show this season and it's disappointing. I miss the laughs and goofiness that was a great distraction from life.

Truth hurts doesn't it?
nickkyr3 September 2021
Will we just ignore the fact that the lowest-rated episodes of this seasons are the ones that criticize the police?

This show is really great and this year they are also addressing real issues while keeping the show's identity which was always to comment on some of modern society's problems.

Anyone having issues with that, it's their problem.

More political garbage.
nathanpclark29 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Jake gets in trouble for wrongly arresting a guy then gets suspended. Apparently everyone forgot the dude was trespassing and ran from a cop.... both of which are illegal and grounds to arrest. But I guess in woke show land nobody thinks about that because political correctness is all that matters.

Yeah it was pretty good. O'Sullivan has become a funny character. Amy and Rosa have funny beer, made me laugh. They did a pretty good misdirection with the whole sweets thing. Overall, a good episode that did their political view thing well.

Another subpar episode this season
Harkonnen228 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
As someone who was putting B99 episodes on random shuffle to watch when I felt like watching something but not something I needed to give my full attention I can honestly say this Season wont be included in that shuffle.

The Set Up was this weeks Political episode and so had very few actual funny moments (odd for what was a comedy). This episode was perhaps the worst so far since in the previous episode its "heavily" implied that Jake aided Doug Judy in escaping prison (someone who very much should be in prison and is guilty of ALOT) and he is fine with that and suffers no consequences. That episode ends without elaborating on what exactly he had to do to escape (besides using the pen), if it included hurting atleast someone which seems reasonable given he was escaping police custody.

In this episode Jake decided to push and investigate an attempted bombing even though the FBI had taken over. He arrested someone who happened to be at the site of the previous attempted bombing and ran when Jake approached him. The moral of this episode seems to be that Jake should only do what he's told or maybe questioned the guy more after he caught up with him.

Its all very contradictory and confusing, one of the next 2 episodes should really have Jake arrested and up on charges for aiding in a prisoner escape.

The main problem I think alot of people are having with this season is they watch this show for the laughs and as pure entertainment with occasional more serious topic episodes that still kept the humour up. Also that the issues they are addressing now are very one sided like I cant believe its easy or enjoyable to be a Cop in America especially now. The Mouse burger was a setup in Blue Flu but it isnt a stretch to think people would do something like that.

Loved this episode.
allweinz22 September 2021
Not sure what's up with the low rating, but I and everyone I know who watched this episode thought it was hilarious and one of the more solid episodes of the series. The writing and quick paced humor is excellent and the performances are on point. People have different expectations I guess, but honestly I love this season.

Ignorant reviewers and it shows
gummdrophop1 September 2021
Brooklyn 99 tackles serious issues in a respectful and clever way which is challenging. The writers are smart. Some people have a hard time swallowing the truth and the reviews show. I always see a pattern of people rating the politicalish episodes like a 1. The show is good everyone calm down.

Great final season episode in Jake journey to adult life
antonioiannone27 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Don't you listen to bad review: this episode is the best Brooklyn 99 episode ever written, specially for a final season. SPOILER ALERT. In this episode Jake is in the wrong, and even if he has good intentions he has to pay the consequences for his action. Is a memorandum for cops and the final lesson in the journey in Jake's adult life. B plot between Terry and Charles is mediocre, but A plot is so good that he has to balance with slapstick comedy.
