When The Dragon Swallowed The Sun
Directed by Dirk Simon
With it’s rather incendiary title leaving no doubt to its makers political persuasions When The Dragon Swallowed the Sun is an ambitious, holistic and exhausting documentary on the Chinese occupation of Tibet, a controversial incursion of alleged sovereign territory which has painfully endured for the past fifty years. Weaving in reminiscences from witnesses and resistance fighters of the original 1959 invasion, a swiftly disseminated potted history of the region and statements from various members of the hydra headed Liberation movement the documentary paints a vivid picture of the past century of Tibetan history, with the traditional method of archival footage and interview clusters illustrating a slow but inexorable suppression of indigenous Tibetan culture, the disintegration of religious independence and the unequivocal crushing of all claims of separate nationhood and self-determination.
It’s an emotive subject with passions high on both...

Kick-Ass 2 | 2 Guns | Planes | The Big City | Once Upon A Time In Mumbai Again | Bachelorette | Call Girl | Aftershock | Kuma | When The Dragon Swallowed The Sun
Kick-Ass 2 (15)
(Jeff Wadlow, 2013, Us/UK) Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Chloë Moretz, Jim Carrey, 103 mins
The amateur Avengers return, though the sequel finds them weighed down by their superhero lifestyles, or is it audience expectations? The ingredients that made the first movie such a pleasure are all here – absurd alter-egos, ultraviolence, high-school angst, swearing – just minus the element of surprise. As a result, this incident-packed story struggles to recapture that balance between comic-book zaniness and real-world teen comedy.
2 Guns (15)
(Baltasar Kormákur, 2013, Us) Denzel Washington, Mark Wahlberg, Paula Patton. 109 mins
Two double-crossed undercover agents must unravel a convoluted conspiracy (and learn to get along, of course) in what could almost be a Lethal Weapon reboot. Washington and Wahlberg spark off each other nicely, which is all that's needed.

Dennis Hopper: Sunday Brunch With The last Rebel, Bristol
It would take a month of Sundays to do justice to Hopper's long and varied career, but this quartet is at least playing at a time of day the late American great might appreciate. Eat off that hangover with a "South West Full English" and watch four of Hopper's key films, even if his chemically enhanced performances might cause hangovers rather than cure them. In fact, this could well be part of a government safety campaign on the effects of different narcotics: Easy Rider (marijuana), Apocalypse Now (cocaine), Blue Velvet (solvent abuse) and The American Friend (Mogadon) – a tribute to Hopper's "range", then.

Tibet Film Festival, London & touring
It's not easy to "celebrate" Tibetan culture wholeheartedly when we might just as easily mourn its systematic destruction, but this festival tells us it's all right to do both.
