So predicatable and boring it hurts
katachikani31 August 2023
Most boring newlyweds move into a unique Victorian house, and yes, you guessed it, it's haunted by boring normcores who conveniently are vintage collectors and costume designers to fit perfectly into the tropes needed for the script.

Oh, we found a plate camera in the attic. Let me go and develop the film in my expensive little cellar and print some unprintable pictures from 1895 for you, you know, I love old crinkets! Wow, I was able to obtain a solid image from the 120 year old plate and look! I wonder who this lady is... And the movie unravels below expectations.

The best characters in the movie were Dawn, her boyfriend, and Rimbaud, the dog. Parker needs to get some backbone and acting classes.

Can't get on with this film
crtrybr16 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Iv really tried to get into this award winning film yet my word it's drawn out cliche after cliche , the main protagonist seems to have women literally dying to be with him & he's not that appealing The sexism is moronic, a gorgeous neighbour throwing herself at the men in the house .

He has a Beautiful intelligent wife on top of it all is it meant to be that he is this irresistible man of the year because I can't see it is it also trying to say is it is his imagination beyond reality it's just really dull I've tried it again and this is the second trying viewing and sorry I hate to give up on films but not for me.

I've seen this all before!

Zero chemistry boring newlyweds move into their new house even tho they don't seem to know each other or share the same plans for their future at all. Meh...

They discover a picture and a collection of 100-year-old letters from a woman who committed suicide after being abandoned by the old owner of the home...

I now what you're thinking... I've seen this all before! Yes, yes you did. Only this time you can watch it in a below average production. Long story short, the movie is unwatchable. A TOTAL WASTE OF YOUR TIME.

Bad everything> script, acting, pacing. Cinematography and music is awful. The end result is a generic bad movie that is no way bad enough to be unintentionally entertaining or funny.

No spoilers because you already know how will it end. SKIP IT. Save yourself!

No black people were harmed in the making of this film.
christopherxyu-8382724 August 2023
There was a more interesting plot with the the blond thot neighbor and the husband, me thinking she would seduce him over the wife only to be subverted for a haunted house plot twist with the wife being the hero; the most boring , bland, annoying, shallow, oblivious, unappealing, useless character in the entire movie. The lace front wig on the best friend was trash. The black women seemed more like trophy wives rather than actual characters. They might have have well been foreign-owned mail order wives from thailand. The plot seemed more consumable following the husband and in figuruing out why hes being stalked or whatever but then the cinematography got more and more confusing as it went on. Also, only white people died or bled which was unbelivable.

Horror, that makes you fear like nobody in your life!!! (no)
gugo_de_payne2 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
What a boring film... I understand that in the 21st century you CANNOT film anything scary or fill it with a creepy meaning, horror films are either about nothing, or nightmares of liberals about Trump supporters coming to power, or tons of violence, but absolutely empty and meaningless. This film falls into the first two categories. An interracial couple moves into a new home. They chatter endlessly, they focus our attention on the fact that the main character smokes marijuana and... that's all. The quintessence of all horrors is the heroine's headache and her HUSBAND'S CHEATING WITH A WHITE GIRL. All. That's all this movie was about. Somewhere out there, sad letters are read to you, something flashes by purely for show, but the main horror is betrayal. Horror movies aren't what they used to be.

Cliche packed
keithbisset7 September 2023
Obviously some money spent on this but shame about the story, script, acting and a million cliches. Almost a film school graduation project.

Cliches abound with old house, cellar with boiler, rocking chair in attic, old letters etc discovered, attractive neighbour, newly weds, the classic coming down the stairs in the middle of the night to discover the old phonograph playing etc the list is unending!

This may have worked as a 20 min short but dragging it out as a,feature was never going to work.

The camera work again is cliched trying to be clever but missing every time. Sorry but dreadful.

Head spinning
kosmasp14 February 2024
No pun intended - this really goes deep diving into quite a few cliches. One of them being the coming and staying in a house that had quite a lot of problems and issues. There is some horror history or rather past to it ... I do wonder if the people going into this should not reconsider.

But they act like every other horror family heading to their doom ... or are they? Well you have to watch the movie to find out of course. I thought the movie did a few clever things. You may know where it is heading and maybe can even guess a major twist - but even if you do I feel the movie is strong enough to work on its merits. It is not superb or awesome or whatever ... but it is more than decent ... especially if you are into horror movies. Acting is also quite nice to say the least.

Unexpectedly ,A Good Movie
carolynocean22 August 2023
I watched this last night , not really expecting it to be any good , but , I was very surprised by it .

Now, having said that , it certainly was'nt perfect .

The plot was a bit confusing at times , but the ending explained a lot , I like it when a movie gets you thinking one way , as in predicting the ending yourself , and then turns you in a different direction, unexpectedly !

The house itself was so atmospheric , beautiful and classic .

I did get a little hint of Hitchcock here and there , no harm in directors dipping in and out of classic movies, I have no problem with that !

All in all I thought this was a very good thriller , perhaps not horror , but very captivating .

Director took us through a cycle
Izuokafor16 August 2023
The 2022 movie The Mistress is a psychological horror film about a newlywed couple who move into a haunted house. The film stars John Magaro, Chasten Harmon, and Aylya Marzolf.

The Director took us through a cycle, it felt really interesting going on this journey and the story with the director. As it gentle unfolds into this thrilling story filled with suspense.

The film is well-shot and atmospheric, with a strong cast. The performances by Magaro and Harmon are particularly noteworthy, as they bring a lot of depth and complexity to their characters. The film's ending is also quite unexpected and thought-provoking.

However, the film does suffer from some pacing issues, and the plot is a bit predictable at times.

Overall, The Mistress is a solid psychological horror film that is worth a watch for fans of the genre. It's not a perfect film, but it's well-made and suspenseful, with a few genuinely chilling moments.
